Worlde Arcane: Attention ALL PLAYERS

WEAKNESSES in your Character Profile

It is mandated by the Rules that each character have weaknesses publically posted in the profile. The weaknesses are established during the application procedure, and removing or substantially reducing them is literally against Rule #3: "UP-FRONT ACCOUNTABILITY: All negatives relied upon to satisfy the Zero-Sum Rule must be posted up-front in the game, either as soon as a corresponding power is used, or before-hand, on a character sheet or in play. No hidden or secret weaknesses satisy the Zero-Sum Rule. However, all players are free to introduce more weaknesses than are necessary to counterbalance their powers; any character may be "over-weak" -- and often such characters are far more fun to play in terms of challenges and triumphs."

Some players have been removing or reducing their characters' weaknesses. This has never been acceptable practice. All players should ensure that Weaknesses are displayed in their profiles ... and that those weaknesses represent at least an approximation of what was approved through the application process. It is not permissible to reduce or substantially alter weaknesses after approval.

The astute player will argue thus: "Yeh fine but look: there's tons of characters who got no Weaknesses displayed! Why are you picking on me?" The answer is simple. Either (1) you are looking at Moderator-created characters used as NPCs, who in many cases are so temporary as not to require detailed profiles, and/or (2) you are looking at other characters in violation of this rule.

Either way, the system stands. Weaknesses are a required part of this game, both in play an in the profile. Freeform RP does not work without built-in hindrances. There are no GM's to throw obstacles at the characters; the characters must provide the obstacles themselves. Rule #3 exists to codify this basic tenet. All players are expected to comform to the Rules. That's not so much to ask is it?

Multiple Characters

According to Rule #9, each player may have ONE character; after six months a second may be requested. That is the limit we have set per individual player. A single character account allows ample NPC, sidekick, and villain usage. We believe that this limit is fair.

For those of you who have had your accounts suspended because you have been playing multiple characters, please remember that the rules apply to everyone, and that your participation in this game depends upon your complying with the rules. We do not think this is too much to ask. If you have a contradictory opinion, please email Conclave@mysteryandmagic.com -- we listen to all concerns open-mindedly.

ALL PLAYERS should observe a clarification to our Rules #1 and #9. (This is officially posted under Rule #1 Tell Me More "What May I Create").

quote:

NPC's outside yer own storyline are not allowed. Creating anon-posted NPC's for use as additional characters is not allowed. Clarification: this means yew are writing only in the scene yer character occupies! Yer "story" does not appear on the boards anywhere except where yer character is at the time. Without this understanding, any player could simply say, "Yeh but all those characters that I'm writing anonymously all over the game, hey, they're all NPC's for my story!" Sorry, but that would be a subversion of the character limit (Rule#9), and we cannot allow it.

For example, if yew have a villain scheming in a dungeon somewhere, well ... we'll all meet him when the hero gets there, and not before. If yer sidekick goes off on a mission, well ... we'll hear what happened when he gets back and reports to yer PC. Yer story will not suffer! Think of it as a challenge to yer writing and roleplaying.

The seductive tendency is to create lots of NPC's, but (admit it!) they just take on lives of their own. Next thing yew know, yer posting in twelve different areas, anon anon anon, and yew've got far more story threads than yew can/may/should be involved in.

Those ambitious and talented players who believe that they can handle lots of characters all over the board ... prove it. Run one character WELL for six months. Then, per Rule #9, get another. Run BOTH of them WELL for a while. If yew think yew can handle lots of characters, show us what yew can do with 2, to begin with. If yew are really good ... if yew really can handle all that ... well, we'll dance triumphantly across that bridge when we come to it, okay?

A new version of the Worlde Arcane font is now available. It adds several accented characters. Weirdos such as töff and Silúvian should rejoice with a great noise.

EMAIL ADDRESSES
are REQUIRED in yer character profiles! They can be anonymous (like hotmail or yahoomail) as long as yew actually check them regularly. Somebody might be trying to send yew questions about yer character or story!

What if yew wanted to email another player, and he had no address listed? Annoying, isn't it! And against the rules, too.

Please make sure yew have a current email address shown in yer character profile!

OFFLINE briefly tomorrow morning:

quote:

HostRocket Customer:

This e-mail is informing yew that we will be conducting power related upgrades in our Clifton Park, NY facility between 6:00AM and 8:15AM Eastern Time on Tuesday January 31, 2006. These upgrades are necessary to support growing power demands resulting from our rapid growth.

During that timeframe, there will be two short service interruptions for all HostRocket customers. We will work to make these interruptions as short as possible to minimize the impact. Yew do not need to report outages during this timeframe.

We appreciate yer patience and continued confidence as we continue to rapidly grow. Have a great weekend!

-The HostRocket Team

PROFILES

An unknown error just erased many of the user profile text ... not the access accounts, just the text ... and not from ALL profiles, as some few were unaffected. It was a very strange error.

I have reset the profile text to its state as of April 1st (how appropriate), which was my latest backup.

Any edits to profiles made since then must be re-entered.

I'm really sorry for this new error. I have no explanation.

Possibly we will move to a new host if this continues to happen. It is not acceptable. Of course, moving requires approx 1 day downtime, and who says things will be better elsewhere? It is a difficult decision and no looking back once it's done.

Again I really apologize for the server troubles we have suffered. I hope yew all understand that we are doing everything we can to keep the game online.

BRIEF OFFLINE PERIOD

Attn All Players:

We will disable game posting briefly, while we move our webhost account from one server to another, in the hopes of avoiding further downtime, corrupted pages, lost character profiles, and deleted user accounts.

We will disable posting beginning tonight (Sunday) about 12:00 Mindnight ET. At 1:00amET we will move the account. When the move is completed, we will re-enable posting on all the boards.

All yer bookmarks & shortcuts will remain the same. We are not changing webhosts ... just moving between machines.

We have a brand-new complete backup of the entire site; no posts or characters will be lost.

Cross yer fingers! Sorry for the downtime, and see yew on the other side!

EMERGENCY MAINTENANCE NOTICE

Today we [our web host] will be making an emergency upgrade in our facility to replace a failing transformer. Given the nature of what causes this problem to occur the upgrade must be done before peak power consumption to assure there is no failure relapse and the safety of those making the upgrade. The upgrade will involve a loss of power expected to last no longer than 15 minutes that will occur in the early afternoon EDT. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and will do everything we can to ensure this upgrade is executed as quickly and painlessly as possible. Thank yew for yer patience.

BRIEF OFFLINE TIME
MysteryAndMagic.com Server Upgrade
starting Sunday, Oct.28 @ 10:00am PT

The upgrade itself will take only approximately one hour. However, our domains' DNS addresses will change, so access will resume at different times for different users, as the address propogates to yer ISPs, possibly taking up to 24 hours, but probably much shorter.

This upgrade will allow us to install a popular wiki software package for consideration in the upcoming Pale Ravens storyworlde.

Complete backups will occur before & after the move. If yew experience any troubles other than some offline time on Sunday, please email inbox@mysteryandmagic.com.

Sorry for the inconvenience, and enjoy the games!

BRIEF OFFLINE TIME
Reminder ...

Tomorrow at 10am Pacific, all domains will go OFFLINE for a move to another server.

We are not changing hosts -- basically, our current host, HostMonster, will just move all our files from one computer to another. This will get us on a server with a higher version of PHP (if yew care).

The move will take less than an hour; BUT, because our DNS numbers will change, there will be a delay while our new addresses move across the Internet to yer ISPs. Once yer ISP gets our new addresses, yer access will resume. There's no way to know how long that will take, but itt should be well under 24 hours, maybe as short as an hour.

Please remember, yer gamemates also might experience delays in returning. Please be patient!

See yew on the other side! :-)

We are pleased to announce this brand-new area for CHARACTERS (not players) to record their thoughts in journal style.

Just start a "new area" with yer character's name as the page title, and let him(/her/it) start journaling in his very own medieval blog.

Cheers to EYVIND for the wonderful idea!

ART CONTEST -- THE DARK UNDERLORD

As a part of the new story arc, I'm running a contest for the coolest picture of the Dark UnderLord.

Yew have TWO WEEKS to draw the most awesome, scariest, creepiest, juggernautest, most demonic -- or whatever superlative yew choose! -- picture of the Dark UnderLord of Worlde Arcane. Use any background, or none -- any setting, any pose, whatever yew like. He can appear however he chooses, so yew can depict him in any physical form.

B&W pencil sketch, color drawing or painting, Photoshop pixelpushing, 2D or 3D render ... whatever yew like. If yew are working purely digitally, yer final art needs to be high-resolution; somewhere around 2,000 to 3,000 pixels in each dimension is a nice target. (Please don't do yer original at some measley 250 pixels just because it fits on Facebook!)

I am the sole judge. The prize is yer choice of a year's subscription (or extension) of Wayfarer, or a MysteryAndMagic.com t-shirt. See our store for details.

The deadline is midnight GMT on Friday, July 3rd, 2009. Email yer art to me (low-res version OK for judging, but I'll want the hi-res version if yew win).

Yer own original work only -- no swiping from the net. Yew grant me rights to use the image online for the site, but ownership of the art remains yers.

We have some talented artists here! Heck, maybe we'll have more than one winner. Let's see what yew got.

[edit] Questions & comments may be posted on our Quest page.
