Worlde Arcane: Isle Obscura: City of Tyrinis

Tyrinis City

The abandoned city of Tyrinis is naught but crumbled stone pillars, delapidated buildings and ruined cobble streets. It looks to have been profitable once, but no longer. Evidence can be seen here that Fish and the Sea were both highly respected, as they are used in the few still-present mosaic designs found on deteriorating walls and floors. If one looks closely, there are other unusual creatures depicted as well, perhaps based on myth, perhaps not.

All he could see were blurs, though it seemed that an especially dark one was around for a least a little bit. Then the presence left.

How long did that take? He asked himself.

I dunno, He answered.

Great. Just great. He went back to pondering the presence, and how it had left not too soon after he had spoken.

Maybe it had been there to kill him.

Maybe he chased it away? He felt a bit better (not physically, but on some level, emotionally, spiritually, or whatever other level there is in a sentient being, but something felt better than it did before) at that thought, though he knew that there was no way it was true. So he was still alive, unable to move, unable to speak, and unable to even blink.

But that was technically moving, so he knew that already.

Alright, so he was unable to move (that included blinking), and unable to speak (whatever that entails).

But at least I'm still alive, A rather small part of him thought.

Whoop dee freakin' doo, The rest of him responded.

His nose itched. And no matter how desperately he wanted to rub, scratch, and above all rip the thing off his face for torturing him so, he couldn't move.

So he just hummed a song in his head while he stubbornly refused to die, and waited in the rain for the ability to move again.

'I've got a lovely bunch a' coconuts, deedodeedeeduhduh, there they are all standing in a row, bumbumbum, big ones, small ones, ones as big as yer head...'

(OOC: From inside the barn)

Before any objections could be raised by her companions, Kymera had slipped quickly through the rickety barn door and into the night to see what she could learn about the Aeros reported by Sahar and Irihi. She was no fool, however, and did not rush headlong into the darkness. In one small hand she gripped her only weapon, a small serrated dagger.

The air was cool and wet, a refreshing change from the humid closeness she'd felt in the barn. Kymera stopped, then turned slowly in a semi-circle to get her bearings, her sensitive pointed ears listening for the slightest sounds, her emerald eyes straining against the darkness in an effort to search out any shapes or signs of the Aeros.

And then she heard a very faint groan, or at least it sounded like a groan. Then she remembered the others had reported the Aeros appeared injured. Turning toward the sound she began to slowly walk toward the source. As she walked she thought she detected labored breathing.

Finally, spying a dark lump on the ground just ahead, Kymera stopped altogether as she watched for any reaction. It did not move. "Hello? I have come to help if yew are in need of assistance." She called to the inanimate form. "I am Kymera and I have healing herbs. Who are yew?" She waited for a response before advancing further.

'Finally!' He exulted in his mind. He knew he'd be able to do something again sooner or later, rain or no rain. He was also able to tilt his head toward the source of the voice, he found, though he had no recollection of his head moving at all.

"Yew aren't another spirit, are yew?" He tried to speak out loud, but he could only whisper the words for some reason. "'Cause I already said I can't go. Not yet."

He watched the blur that was standing not too far away, wondering why it didn't answer.

"I can see yew though." He continued to talk, scared he might lose the ability again. "I can see yew. Are yew real? Are yew real, can yew help me?"

His voice gained strength even though he continued to whisper, and the final words, can yew help me?, were the only ones strong enough to even make a sound over the dull roar that echoed in his head from the rain. The force of the words, feeble though they were, surprised him into silence.

For several moments Kymera heard nothing in response to her query, only the patter of the incessant rain drenching the landscape around her. She twitched the tips of her delicate pointed ears, concentrating her auditory sense toward the shape ahead. There! She picked up faint whisperings, too low to make out completely, but for a simple plea for help before the Aeros lapsed back into silence.

"I will help yew." she called out as she quickened her pace to close the short distance between them. Once by his side, the dryad kneeled down and tried to assess his condition.

In the dull gray wetness of the surroundings it was difficult to determine just what injuries the Aeros had sustained. "I must get yew inside the barn where there is a small fire to provide warmth and light. Do yew think yew can stand with assistance?" She was reaching inside one small pouch as she spoke, her nimble fingers searching for a bit of herb that would help numb the pain. "I have something that may help yew get through the short walk. Can yew chew this?"

Bringing forth a small clump of dried leaves, the daughter of the forest laid them gently against the man's lips to indicate he should ingest the substance.

He could see! Aka Aar, he could see! Not just the blurs of dark or not-so-dark anymore, he could see her!

A smile tugged at the corners of his mouth, but wasn't able to fully implant itself on his face. "I can see yew..." He whispered. "Are yew real?"

He barely heard the woman's words as she spoke to him, and he had a hard time trying to focus enough to reply with the words he wanted to say. When the words tumbled out, they were a bit stronger than a whisper, but not by much.

"I can't feel my...arms, my legs...myself." He could only see her knees, as his head was still turned to the side. Almost violently, because of his lack of control, he moved his head to regard the young woman. "I thought...thought they were going to eat me." His voice was getting stronger due to its use after such a long period of silence. "Stand...maybe. I hope." He mentally grumbled at the effort to

"Are yew--" His words, soft and quiet as they were, were cut off as she laid the herbs against his mouth. He opened his mouth, and let the herbs fall into it. He began to chew, staying quiet as he looked at her, taking her in. "Yew won't eat me, will ya?"

Despite the grim circumstances surrounding the situation, Kymera found herself smiling ever so slightly. The stranger seemed to be suffering a touch of delirium, understandably, given his condition. Still, she found his question humourous, if not ironic.

"Nay, I shan't eat yew, I can promise yew that much." That was certainly true enough since promising the Tree Spirit she would serve as Priestess of the Great Urmother upon completion of this misbegotten quest she was now set upon. As a dryad she was already mostly vegetarian, but as Priestess of Treesland she would follow a strict code of abstinence from all meat. As well as other forms of abstinence, another ironic twist of fate.

"And aye, I am real enough." She slipped a slender arm beneath his shoulders as he lapsed into silence and allowed the pain-numbing herbs to take effect. "In just a few moments I will attempt to raise yew into a sitting position. Tell me when yew are ready to try." She hoped he would be able to sit, then stand, and then with a little luck and a lot of determination, make it the short distance back to the barn.

"Good." He whispered. "Tha's nice a' ya."

Slowly, it seemed like years to him, he found himself sitting up. Then, it seemed like moments later, he was standing. He found himself moving, alomst like he wasn't the one moving, but just watching himself moving, like he was a toy, being pushed by a child.

"Aka-Aar is like a child," He whispered, smiling to himself. "There's someone higher than he though, 'cause somethin' pushes the wind. Maybe I'm a grain a' sand, that's pushed by the toy, eh?" He didn't phrase the question to pretty young woman helping him, but he did look at her after asking it, making it seem like he did. She might not have heard it, because he mumbled most of it to himself, but the last part was said quite clearly, audible to his mind outside his thoughts, which seemed to be making a lot of noise lately.

He frowned, closing his eyes. He needed to find...

"Have ya seen a little Aeros 'round?" He asked, concentrating as hard as he could. He needed to find...

"Rather small, eh, an' scared lookin', like they lost their whole family." He was actually describing two Aeros, having planted another's face over Sahar's. In his state, he had an excuse. "Dark wings. Need ta help 'em. Know what it's like ta..."

He was walking like a drunkard, his feet barely holding his own weight. In that moment, he swore to himself to help whoever was helping him at that moment in any way he could.

'Thanks for helpin' me." He whispered, "I owe ya, an' that's a promise. An' Halrac Elisarios always keeps his promises."

With some effort the Aeros began to move forward. Kymera kept her arm firmly in place to give support and guidance as they traversed the slippery ground toward the barn. Though the light was dim and gray, Kymera could detect a coppery hue to the man's hair, several shades darker than her own auburn tresses. She tried to be mindful of his large wings as she pressed forward, not knowing whether or not they might be among his injuries.

"Yew must be referring to Sahar." She responded to his question regarding a young dark-winged Aeros girl. "She is safe for the nonce, being looked after by others yew will meet once we get to the barn. She has been through a great deal and is..." Here she paused wondering how best to describe the adolescent's lapse into madness. "... not quite herself at the moment. Hopefully it will pass."

The man swayed slightly and she braced herself to steady him again before they continued on. "Yew owe me nothing. It is a simple act of aid that most anyone would offer under the circumstances." She noted the name he offered. "Well, Halrac Elisarios, I fear yew are not completely saved yet. Once we rejoin my companions, there will be questions and suspicions as to how and why yew are here in this forsaken land."

The barn was now within sight. The dryad and the purple-winged Aeros stumbled toward the door where the ragtag assortment of her friends awaited. She wondered when -if - Fin, Risqu'e, and Avonox would return, fearful now that one or all may have met the same end as their young Captain. The quest was not going well. And now it seemed the original traveling party was almost outnumbered by strangers found in unfortunate circumstances.

As the pair approached the crooked worn door of the barn Kymera called out to give the occupants fair warning. "'Tis I! Kymera with the wounded Aeros."

He watched the ground, intent on not falling. Absently, as he told her that he didn't care much about 'most anyone', and that he would've probably left himself in the street to die if he had happened upon himself in such a state, he noted he had raised a wing over Kymera's head to shield her from the rain.

He gave the rogue-ish smirk that he was born to wear. "Ya don't need ta worry 'bout me bein' a bad guy. As for what I'm doin' here..." He paused, a small frown now decorating his features, as he thought about what he could tell. He might not have been a bad guy, but there were still things that weren't anyone else's business. He would have to tell them the 'how' of getting on this island, that was for sure. He wouldn't say a word about his other 'project'. He was thinking more clearly now, the movement 'getting the blood flowing', as it were. 'On that note,' he thought to himself, and felt his bolt wound.

"...I was on a slave ship. They were about to cut off my wings. I managed to surprise the guard that came in to feed the slaves, and freed myself and the others. When the slaves were freed, yew can guess what happened. I managed to get around the fighting and got the lifeboat and away before the ship caught fire and sunk. I drifted here." He looked at the hand he had felt the wound on his back with while he was speaking, and saw the blood that had liberally covered his fingers.

"Wonder how long it's been like this?" He said to himself. "Musta hit somethin'- Watch out there," He said to Kymera when they stopped for her to call out to those in the barn. Her arm had slid down to adjust his weight on her, and her wrist was close his bolt wound. "Don' wanna get blood on yer arm, do ya?"

Kymera was not squeamish, but she was concerned when she realized the man was bleeding at a rate indicative of more serious injuries than she had realized. No wonder he was weak!

She adjusted her arm to avoid the open gash and called out again to her comrades within the old barn. "I am coming in with the wounded Aeros."

"Alright. Brace yerself for a few more steps. Almost there." She made no comment regarding his story as to how he had come to be here. It sounded plausible enough, but since starting this journey she was learning to take such stories with a grain of salt. It was best to keep one's guard up. Especially here.

The first trio hunted through the murky light and falling mist for the trail that led from the Barn to the center of town. They made good time, and once within the shelter of the standing walls that lined the streets, they moved from building to building, careful to keep to the firmest ground.

They moved north, pausing at the Well

Halrac puffed a bit, his breath not coming easily. In fact, if he hadn't the darkish tan that most of his race did (that was among the few things he did have in common physically with his race), he would be rather red faced. "Stupid pirates...stupid crossbows." He muttered. He kept his eyes trained to the ground, taking each step as carefully as he could while still keeping up with the others.

They wouldn't stop for him. He wouldn't stop for him, if he was them. Halrac's eyes crossed. 'Too confusing.'

Draxxen's brow furrowed slightly at the efforts of Halrac. Concern showed openly as he glanced to the other stranger in the party, Joshua. This wasn't good. One injured and stubborn, another sullen and disgruntled. And then there was Draxx himself, under suspicion of murders he didn't commit, just because Sahar was insane.

I hate situations like this

Sidling closer to Halrac, the Mythalian spoke softly, out of the side of his mouth, to the injured Aeros.

"Halrac, you need assistance. I am begging you to let me help. I know you are reluctant to show weakness, I know a way of walking which will make it appear to others as though I am the one being helped. Please my friend, don't injure yourself more by being so stubborn."

By Halrac Elisarios (Halrac)

Sunday, March 26, 2006 - 6:32 am GMT Edit | Link |

Halrac didn't seem to hear Draxxen for a short moment, but without moving his eyes from his careful watch for anything that might make him stumble, and consequently allow for him to be left behind, he answered back.

"I ain't weak. There ain't no reluctance, cause I ain't weak." He puffed out, still managing to stay quiet. "And I ain't stubborn."

He stayed quiet for another moment, only glancing up now and then to see where the guards and Cute n' Crazy was. Truth was, he was probably worse off mentally than she was at the moment. He'd just dealt with the paranoia and fear for so long, it didn't affect him so badly.

When images of his hair-brained flight out of that shack village came to mind, he amended it. Sometimes he didn't react so badly.

He looked at Draxxen for a third silent moment, seemingly debating with himself. "Ya can make it look like I'm helpin' you?" He asked finally.

Draxxen nodded slightly.

Yes, I do. It's an old trick another friend taught me when I was injured one time, and didn't want others to know how badly. I know you're not weak, but you are injured." Draxx spoke softly still, eyes roving and watching the rest of the party, apparently not paying nay attention to Halrac other than walking near him.

"Just trust me. You'll look great, I'll look like a fool"

Halrac grunted a bit. "I don' wancha ta look like a fool." He shrugged. It was more than his pride on the line, it was his survival. His stomach gurgled with lack of food.

"Yeah, alright, do yer thing. But remember, I ain't doin' this 'cause I need yer help, s'only 'cause yew kept insistin'!"

By Draxxen Shadoz (Draxxen)

Monday, March 27, 2006 - 5:01 am GMT Edit | Link |

Draxxen nodded knowingly at Halrac's protastations. He then allowed himself to stumble on a conveniently large stone. Smoothly placing his weight against Halrac, Draxxen began a limping walk, with his arm on Halrac's shoulder, that made it seem as though he was being supported by the Aeros.

"Owch!" declared the Mythalian loudly, "I think I hurt my ankle. Gimme a hand here Halrac."

To Halrac he whispered, "Play along, and walk normally. I'm supporting enough of your weight that you won't feel it on your injury."

By Halrac Elisarios (Halrac)

Tuesday, March 28, 2006 - 1:53 am GMT Edit | Link |

Halrac winced at the way the Mythalian had declared his 'injury'. 'Don't make it too obvious, there.' He thought wryly.

Despite the lack of weight on his injury, it still pained him, and that was saying nothing about his back. "Have I mentioned my extreme dislike of pirates and crossbows?" He muttered to himself, though it may have seemed that he was speaking to Draxxen. Picking up his head from the ground, and tried to make it look like he was walking normally, but to his dismay he still had a pronounced limp.

'I certainly hope Cute n' Crazy don't get any wrong ideas about this.' He thought to himself. That girl had some weight within the group, and could most likely get him killed. He glanced to where the Healer was walking, and for an entirely different reason, the male pride that comes inevitably when a woman comes along into his life, hoped she didn't see this moment of weakness as well. That other one, the...man, he seemed to be getting along well with the Healer.

Thankfully, there was no jealousy. Halrac assumed it was because he never had a chance in the first place, but a small part knew that he just didn't have enough room in him for the paranoia and the envy at the same time. Those emotions tended to fill one up, in his experience.

Ariana walked along, her sword held at the ready. She rolled her eyes when she noticed the Aeros struggling near the end of the line. All she had needed was a moment. She muttered something about pigheaded guards, then paused and turned to the person behind her. She reached in one of her bags and pulled out the small jar of ointment she had been taking to Halrac when they had left the barn.

She placed the jar into the hand of the one behind her. "Please pass this back through the line and have those who still have some painful injuries smooth on a thin layer on their wound. It will help with pain and prevent infection. We need everyone we have right now, I fear". She then turned back and continued on.

By Kymera Ravenwood the Dryad (Kymera)

Tuesday, March 28, 2006 - 8:55 pm GMT Edit | Link |

Having left the barn roughly fifteen minutes after the first group, Kymera's party cautiously made their way along the wet and slippery path toward the town of Tyrinis. They had become a bit strung out along the trail. The two guardsmen brought up the rear to ensure no stragglers were left behind.

The dryad had been lost in her own thoughts, watching the raindrops wash away the footprints of those who had gone ahead. At least there will be no trail for any unfriendlies to follow.

A sharp cry brought her focus immediately to the two men up ahead, Halrac and Draxxen. From what she could tell, Draxxen had either twisted an ankle or had further aggravated an existing injury. She watched as the purple-winged Aeros assisted the Mythalian. The two men hobbled along together managing to keep a steady pace despite their difficulties.

"It's good to see the two of them working together." She spoke quietly to Joshua who was nearest her. "During such trying times as this, people often rail against one another rather than pulling together. 'Tis an unfortunate side-effect of all the strain and stress."

As they neared the city itself, Kymera was struck once more by the utter quiet of the streets, save for the steady rhythm of the unrelenting rain. This had once been a thriving city full of busy people going about their daily lives. "It is hard to fathom just why the people left Tyrinis. I've heard it told they practically disappeared overnight. One has to wonder just what could cause such a sudden exodus."

The dryad glanced behind her to see how the others were doing. Sahar had fallen back a bit, but was still plodding along. Her face looked grim and resolute, but at least she was not talking wildly anymore.

But where was Irihi? Kymera scanned the edges of the trail for any sign of the dark-haired sorceress. Perhaps she had faded back into that strange other worlde as she was wont to do from time to time. It occurred to Kymera that the aloof elf maiden was likely mourning the loss of Trask. After all, Irihi had been engaged to marry him. The thought of the cat-eyed psiknight brought a small pang to the dryad's chest. Dear Urmother, if he is truly gone, I pray the end was quick and he did not suffer. Her emerald eyes glistened for a moment, but any tears were hidden by the raindrops on her face.

Draxxen sniffed and twitched an ear. Kymera's murmered comments to Joshua were caught in his large ears and transmitted to his brain.

"Sorry about overdoing it Halrac," he whispered, {"I get carried away sometimes."}

A small chuckle issued from his mouth as he tried to engage the Aeros in conversation.

"So, my new friend, how exactly did you come by a blade such as that?" the Mythalian continued in a more normal tone, nodding down to Halrac's scimitar. "And by the by, I hate pirates as well."

Halrac blinked, drawn out of his thoughts by the Mythalian's attempt at conversation.

He grunted a bit as a sudden sting in his lower back reminded him of how close he was to being an invalid, but attempted to be nicer, fully aware he wasn't the most friendly of folks.

"What?" He asked, sparing a quick glance at his sword. "Is it uncommon? Didn' think this type was all that special. Piece o' shite didn' help me much, though that's prolly my fault. Shoulda' dunked it seven times 'stead a' three."

Joshua nodded in response.

"Agreed. I've certainly tried to be cooperative for example, but yer humourless friends with the swords don't take to strangers well. Of course, given the circumstances, I can't say I truly begrudge them for it."

The pair walked a little ahead of the rest of their group, as ruins towered around them. The gambler's green orbs took in the ominous remnants of Tyrinis.

"I'm afraid my knowledge is very limited about this city...I've never even been to this isle before, so I'm rather lost." He fell silent as his gaze went back on the ruins.

"Well, my guess is there was a battle here...perhaps an invasion. The state of some walls and buildings here are evidence of that. There are some signs of fire, too." His gaze went over to a structure that might have once been a house. The ground was charred and blackened around it.

Looking back at Kymera, a grin formed. "But I like yer story better. It has an aura of mystery surrounding it."

"We are all rather lost, I fear." Kymera responded to Joshua's comment. "Nobody comes to this island on purpose unless they are a pirate or worse, or so I have been told."

Her eyes scanned the buildings in various stages of disrepair, overgrown vines threatening to overtake the ones nearest the edges of the forest. She raised an eyebrow at her companion's comment regarding a battle.

"I suppose anything is possible. Men have been warring since the beginning of time. I do believe it is one of their favorite pastimes. I have always wondered why that is so. Perhaps yew might explain it to me?" Kymera met his grin with a smile of her own as they continued toward what appeared to be the town's communal well.

The sky was still overcast and gray, but overall the weather was calmer than it had been. The rain was softer now, a steady patter on the cobblestone streets. Kymera didn't mind. As a child of the forest she had certain immunities to inclement weather.

Stepping from the villa she turned her face upward, allowing the raindrops to fall gently against her face. It felt refreshing and it made her smile. "Shall we go to the heart of the town? To the marketplace?" She knew Joshua was behind her though he'd not said a word. He seemed determined to look out for her, which she actually found quite endearing.

"After we see what we can salvage from the shoppes, perhaps we ought to check the docks to see if there might be any sort of craft that could be made seaworthy." She turned toward Joshua now, her mane of auburn hair tousled in damp curls about her face. "What say yew?"

Joshua was not surprised when Kymera spoke to him without addressing him first, as he'd not made his presence secret or stealthy.

When she turned to face him however, he was temporarily robbed of conscious thought. Under most average conditions Kymera was beautiful, but with the added moisture on her face and hair, her appearance was breathtaking and struck Joshua anew. He blinked and swallowed, in a vain attempt not to appear flustered.

"Uh....that....um, that is..."

What had she been saying? Joshua quickly replayed her words in his mind as he tore his gaze from her.

"Ah yes. Um, after we search the marketplace, a boat would be a high priority find." He replied, finding the cobblestone underneath his feet suddenly worth staring at.

To say that Kymera was unaware of the effect she often had on men would be an untruth. She was, after all, a free-spirited dryad, the epitome of sensual womanhood. So when Joshua stammered and seemed to lose his train of thought for a moment, she had a reasonably good idea what had distracted him. Not the least embarrassed, Kymera gently took Joshua's hand in her own and waited for him to look up again.

"Joshua. There is no need to look away. If mine countenance pleases thee, then by all means look thy fill. It is a small pleasure that costs nothing." Her emerald eyes twinkled as she spoke in a simple straightforward fashon.

"But now we must go about our errand here. Others depend on us. I suggest we start with that inn down the street." She pointed toward a large sign banging in the wind, one end having come undone from the post on which it hung.

"It may have seen better days, but an inn may have something in the way of foodstuffs and blankets and who knows what else?" She tugged at his hand and smiled. "Come along. Time is wasting."

Joshua regained most of his composure, though he smiled sheepishly as she took hold of his hand. Despite the many nefarious things Joshua had been accused of being, he was a gentleman, and felt it was rude to stare. Although when Kymera told him she did not mind him looking at her, he lifted his head.

She was breathtaking. Simply exquisite. It was not in actuality looking that was the problem itself; the sight of her ignited a passion inside him that urged him onward to do more. Still for the moment, he beat down his lust, determined to focus on the task at hand.

"Right then. On to the inn." His normal smile asserted itself, and he gave Kymera's hand a gentle squeeze as she took hold of his own to lead the search inside the inn.

Kymera moved slowly through the deserted streets, taking care to balance her load of goods as she retraced her steps back to the villa.

The wind had died down some, the rain had nearly stopped, though puddles of water were pooled here and there in the ruts of the street. She walked in silence, listening to her own footfalls and those of Joshua who followed behind her.

Joshua followed in similiar silence, not so much out of lack of anything to say - the gambler rarely faced such a dilemma - but moreso because his concentration was based primarily on keeping his load upright and off the ground. He glanced up at the sky briefly.

"Seems like this long storm's finally blowing o'er, eh? If our luck keeps, we'll be up and away shortly." He grinned as he saw their hideout in the distance.

"Well Kymera..." Joshua mused as the trio set out to scavange. "Why don't we start by assessing the state of the ship yew came here in? There may yet be something of value left in it."

Draxxen quirked an eyebrow as he walked. His footsteps nearly silent, an odd trait for someone his size, and waited for Kymera to speak. He already knew where he was going to scavenge first. Kymera's earlier plan had almost mirrored what was in his thoughts.

Scavenge through the town, then investigate the docks. Comb the beach along the waterfront over to the ship, then gut the wreckage. Sounds like the best plan to me, but let's see how Kymera's emotions affect her judgement. This man is clearly appealing to her. This should be entertainting.

Stepping outside the villa, Kymera noted the afternoon was still and gray. There was no rain, praise the gods, but the perpetual pall of clouds and mist, and the smell of salt, hung heavy in the air.

"I am anxious to see the ship." She replied to Joshua's suggestion. "The Endurance was the pride of the Maghnus fleet, yew know. Torin, rest his soul, was the youngest son of the Maghnus Shipping magnate, Capt. Zayeth Maghnus of ElHazir. Sadly, the father was lost at sea some months ago, and the company is now run by Garrick Maghnus, elder brother of Torin." She shook her head, imagining the shock it would be to Garrick when he eventually learned of his brother's demise.

"But, we are here in Tyrinis now. It seems logical to look through some of the other buildings we missed earlier." She smiled and pointed to several signs further down the street. "There is a locksmith shoppe and a magick shoppe and a nautical supply house that may have tools or something of interest to be salvaged. It will take but a short while to look within."

The dryad noted that Draxxen had gone quiet again. "To save time, perhaps we could each take a shoppe. They are close together and within shouting distance of one another should anything unusual occur."

She surveyed the battered signs swaying in the light breeze that always seemed to be blowing off the ocean. "Yew can each choose the one yew want to explore. I'll take the last one." Kymera wanted to do a thorough job, to leave no stone unturned. If there was anything at all of value here, she intended to find it.

Joshua was anxious to see if the ship was salvagable; despite the bad news, he held the hope it might be intact enough to get them off this rock. But he saw the sense in combing the city from top to bottom.

"I'll search the nautical house, then." He moved over to the small building. The door was stuck, but one swift kick made it swing inward on its hinges.

"I'll search the magick shoppe. I'm hard enough to kill that I should be at the least risk for unstable materials. Also, there might be a smithy around here. It might behoove us to keep our eyes open for it."

Draxxen smiled and ducked through the doorway of the shoppe, the door itself had long since rotted away. His eyes quickly adjusted to the dim light.

Okay, I don't smell anything kinetic or active right off the bat. But they may be hidden. Time for some fun.

"Very well then. I shall look within the Locksmith Shoppe." Kymera nodded agreeably to Joshua and Draxxen and watched them head for their respective buildings before she continued toward the small sign that pictured two crossed keys over the shoppe door.

"Please be very careful!" she called after the two of them, then stepped over the dusty threshold and into the dim interior of the deserted building. She didn't really like separating, but it would definitely save time.

A wide smile graced her lips as she spied Joshua coming out of one of the other buildings. She waved a hand in return to his greeting and quickly hurried to where he stood.

"Oh do tell!" she exclaimed upon hearing he might have discovered something of importance. "I fear I have found nothing but a few rusty tools..." She lamented as she produced the file from her pouch. "...and this odd looking animal trap." The dryad held up the item she'd mistaken for a trapper's aid.

"What sort of animal it was meant to trap I could not say, for I've never seen such a device quite like it. Look. There is a tiny keyhole in front, yet it does not look as though it could hold anything within. The gaps in the metal are too far apart on the sides. Curious, isn't it?"

She moved the thing closer to Joshua so he could get a good look, completely oblivious to the true nature of the chastity belt.

Joshua had no personal experience with such items, but he had travelled to many lands, seen many things...and many women too. The odd nature of the 'trap' while not apparant to Kymera, was not lost on the gambler, and he had to hold back his laughter.

"Ah Kymera, m'sweet, that 'trap' as yew put it is actually....um, well how do I put this..." He pondered the issue.

"Once before, when I was injured I came into the care of a sect of priestesses, who nursed me back to health. The majority of these priestesses were young and beautiful, but were sworn to chastity. To keep mindful of their vows and to ward off undesirable men, they wore chastity belts...such as the one yew now hold in yer hand." He said, trying with difficulty not to smirk.

Finally I'm back! Apologies to all for the delay.)

There was a gradual dawning in the dryad's eyes as she listened to Joshua explain the purpose of the device she'd referred to as an 'animal trap'. A chastity belt he called it!

She was not embarrassed by this revelation, but rather, found the whole idea both fascinating and repugnant. Kymera held it up again to examine it more thoroughly, trying to picture just how it would be worn.

"What? What a perfectly dreadful invention!" She proclaimed at length. "It must be terribly uncomfortable!" There was a hint of indignation in the tone of her voice as well as sympathy for the poor unfortunates who had worn such a thing. Her emerald eyes peered through the gaps in the iron framework, looking at Joshua as she shook her head in wonder.

"There are most surely other ways to ward off advances! It was undoubtedly invented by a MAN!" She tossed the horrid device to one side now that its true nature had been revealed, for there was no need to keep it as far as she could see. Having washed her hands of the object, she tossed her auburn curls and moved on to the next topic; Joshua's discovery.

"Do tell me what yew have found. It is bound to be ever so much better than my find." She laughed aloud and added, "Unless it happens to be the male equivalent of this... this... chastity belt." She was sure there must be such a thing. Umans were always inventing peculiar items with little practical use.

(OOC: Hurrah! A pleasure to see yew back!)

Joshua had a somewhat difficult time restraining his amusement at Kymera's reaction to the true nature of the metal apparatus. He agreed in full with her opinion however.

"Indeed...I, ah, have no personal experience with chastity belts for EITHER gender, but I imagine they'd be terribly uncomfortable."

As she moved the discussion towards his find, his eyes sparkled. Indeed, the gambler considered his find more informative, and might provide a clue to getting off this isle.

"Inside the navy office was a map...of this entire isle." He said with a grin. "I think it was drawn up by the blokes who lived in this city. It shows the layout of the isle, and even hints a few possible locales where, just maybe, a ship might be docked. If yer vessel is a wreck, we may find another docked in one of the caves I saw on the map."

Joshua's find was far better than Kymera could have hoped for. "A map of the island is exactly what we need! There was excitement in her voice as she continued. "And if there are fishing coves indicated, then perhaps there is a chance of finding a seaworthy craft. It is well worth investigating I say. Let us find Draxxen and share the good..."

The loud crashing sound a short distance away caused the dryad to stop mid-sentence and quickly turn toward the noise. Her concern turned to relief when she heard the familiar voice of the Mythalian calling out to her and to Joshua.

"It appears our friend has surfaced. I wonder what he has gotten into now?" She smiled at Joshua, her spirit renewed by his discovery. And now it seemed Draxxen had something to share with them as well. Kymera started toward the colorful sign that hung over the crumbling magick shoppe.

A loud crash interrupted their conversation, and Joshua sighed, then nodded.

It always felt good to be outdoors, away from the shadows and confining walls of the buildings. Kymera walked briskly to catch up with Draxxen, keeping pace with Joshua's longer stride.

"Draxxen, we are ready to go!" she called out to the Mythalian. "We must get down to the bay where the ship foundered. And there is some good news! Joshua found a map of the city which seems to pinpoint coves where we just might find a seaworthy craft." Her voice held a hint of excitement at the prospect. She wished Ariana and Finn and Halrac were here to share the good news. Briefly she wondered what they were doing now and if things were going well for them. Being separated was always risky, but under the circumstances there had been little choice. If anyone could save Avonox, it was the threesome who had elected to go after him.

It had taken another quarter hour to traverse the coastal treeline before finally arriving at the southern edge of the old abandoned seaport.

Kymera was anxious to get back to the villa where she and Draxxen and several guardsmen had parted company with Fin and his party. Each group had agreed to explore certain parts of the island and report back, but the dryad feared they had been gone longer than they should have, and there was a growing fear that something might have befallen the others.

"Draxxen, let us make haste to the old villa. Surely they have returned by now and are waiting for us." Even as she spoke the words, there was a questioning tone in her voice.

The abandoned town of Tyrinis was eerily quiet as Kymera, Draxxen and the two guardsmen walked in single file through the streets, making their way to the villa where they were hoped to rejoin the other half of their party.

Though only a few days had passed since they had parted company, it felt like an eternity to the dryad. What if the others had run into pirates too? What if they were all dead? These thoughts, and many more, ran through her mind as she hurried along.

The three scurvy brigands had stopped briefly on the outskirts of Tyrinis to catch their breath and pass around a swig of rum from a shared jug.

Argo wiped his mouth on his ragged sleeve and considered their next move. "I say we wait 'til nightfall and then sniff 'em out under cover of darkness. They could be in any of the old buildings, so we need to search slowly and carefully."

Goucheye felt his swallow of rum warm the back of his throat. He closed his one good eye and savored it before he spoke. "I be wantin' to find 'em right now and finish 'em off, but I know ye be right, Argo. Best to take our time an' not spook 'em. Catch 'em while they sleep."

Blackie just nodded as he finished a long pull on the jug. His feet hurt in the ill-fitting boots he was wearing. He'd taken them off a dead man over a year ago, and they never had fit proper-like. If the long-eared fellow he'd seen with the woman had a decent pair of boots, Blackie would be claiming them for sure.
