Sumbura
Sumbura is the most important industrial town of Thapelel. Built near the meeting point of the Sengal and the Umdzawe Rivers, this town is the center of river trade and produces many of the goods that make life easier or harder - depending upon who yew are. The city is shaped like a great circle, constantly expanding as new business and warehouses are added. Depending upon yer pourpose within Sumbura, yew may want to visit one of several areas: The Inner Circle - Guild Houses and upper class houses. The Mid Circle - Middle class houses, Prison and Militia. The Outer Circle - Warehouses, Businesses and Alchemists. The Ring Wall - An expandable defensive wall, where the City Gates are located. Submura Region - Lower class houses and farmland. Sumbura has many businesses, some legal and some not, however all is controlled by the Guild Leaders from the Inner Circle who'll only frown on illegal activities if they are not getting any benefit from it. These Guild Leaders form the High Council which, together with an elected Mayor from the Council, rules Sumbura. The City Guard keep order in the city, and are easy to spot with their distinctive spiked helmets and dark green tabards over their light chain mail. Each guard carries a long spear and broadsword, and those on certain duties may also carry a shield emblazoned with the emblem of a black sun. The City Guard operates outside the Guild system, though they are answerable to the Mayor, who is answerable to the Guild Council. The Guild system is extremely central to Sumburan society - so central, that it is customary to address a person first by his House's name and then by his private one (e.g. IronMonger Hrenz, Miller Ninneq etc.). All citizens of Sumbura have to belong to one Guild-House or another. Only those who work in the city-service or at public establishments (i.e. priests, innkeepers, guards, jailors, soldiers etc.) do not have to belong to a Guild and have their matters dealt with directly by the Mayor. Since professions usually run in the family in Sumbura - most members of a specific Guild-House are also family relatives (Guild-Hose GolemMaster is the exception. Since it is relatively new, it consists of members of different families that left their profession and became GolemMasters). The people of Sumbura have found a way to bypass the laws against slavery in Thapelel and created for themselves a cheap and reliable labour-force in the form of many conjured Golem-Workers. This, as well as the thriving illegal hish-hash trade within the city - and the thick smog covering some of Sumbura's industrial quarters - gained the city its dubious title: The Dark Heart of Sunny Thapelel. |
