Worlde Arcane: Thapelel: Kioko Rinn

Kioko Rinn
Gateway to the Land of the Sun

With permission of the artist, Marc Exner

Kioko Rinn is a flourishing seaport and the largest of the kingdoms of Thapelel. It is a place of many wonders, frequented by merchants and other visitors from across the worlde. Rinn's wealth comes not only from imports and exports, but also from tourism, which is a huge source of revenue for this bright and beautiful city by the sea.

It isn't as though sunny Kioko Rinn doesn't have its dark side, however. An old animosity exists between the two dominant Uman lineages of the city: those descended from the original settlers of the area, an olive-skinned people who migrated from the Gopago Desert; and those descended from the ruddy, fair-haired Skylding barbarians from beyond the sea, who ruled the city as conquerors for nearly three centuries. While in fact these two peoples have existed side by side for so long that there are few Umans born in Kioko Rinn who are not descended in some measure from both, there are many who align themselves with one group or the other, and regard those they perceive to be members of the opposing group with hatred and mistrust. Too, the city is a breeding ground for corruption and organized crime. While most of Rinn's denizens and visitors are happily oblivious to this fact, crossing the wrong person or being in the wrong place at the wrong time may prove dangerous, and occasionally even deadly.
