Worlde Arcane: The Ice Krowne: The Frosty Peaks: The Crystalline Towers: Laboratory

Laboratory

This spacious laboratory is where the Wizardess spends the majority of her time carrying out her unorthodox experiments. It is filled with equipment, instruments, stacks of books, and endless bottles of potions and poisons.

It had been a frustrating morning in the laboratory for the high wizardess. Lunare Ves'ule was working on one of her newest experiments in mind control, and it was not going as well as she had anticipated.

"Pox!" She called for her assistant with an edge of irritation in her voice.

"Bring me the vial of Unending Agony. The green one over there next to the jar of faery wings." She pointed a perfectly manicured finger across the room to a high shelf where containers of bubbling potions, small wriggling lifeforms, and other assorted dark ingredients sat in neat rows, each carefully labeled in Lunare's own elegant, meticulous script.

"And for the love of Urndrithe, whatever yew do, do NOT drop it." She recalled the last clumsy spill by the mindless Pox. The acidic mixture had eaten a rather large hole completely through her favorite rosewood writing table.

Responding to the command of his mistress, Pox lurched his way over to the high ladder leaning against the shelves of condiments. The slow-moving, dim-witted mutant was only too happy to serve the needs of the wizardess. This was his life now - such as it was - and he smiled in a child-like way, eager to carry out whatever she asked of him.

With low grunts under his breath, the once-Hafling laboriously climbed the ladder to the uppermost shelf to retrieve the requested vial. "Uhhhhh... ungghhh...." he squinted with bloodshot eyes at the collection of jars before finally grasping one with a gnarled claw-like hand.

It took some effort to negotiate the ladder backwards with only one hand free, but finally Pox found himself on secure footing once more, the precious vial held firmly against his chest.

"Pox... get potion for... mistress." He spoke in a halting voice as he delivered the swirling green mixture to Lunare. "Pox... did... good." He held out the prize, pleased with himself for not having dropped it, and waited for whatever came next. It might be praise, it might be a tongue lashing, but either way it would please him. His mind, his body, his soul belonged to Lunare Ves'ule.

In her remote laboratory high in the Crystalline Towers of the Ice Krowne, Lunare Ves'ule paced back and forth in the early hours, restless and unable to sleep.

What is taking Vacek so long? Her thoughts were on her primary agent who had been sent some months earlier to Ufaeria to find another 'suitable subject' for Lunare's ongoing experiments in mind-bending. The High Wizardess had been going through subjects at an alarming rate, and she was down to her last few. If Vacek did not return soon, her important work would stall - and that was simply not at option. It was apparent she needed more agents to serve her needs.

"I cannot wait." she spoke under her breath as she came to a decision. With purposeful strides she ascended a small spiral staircase to the upper reaches of her laboratory tower. There, on a small circular table sat a round scrying ball of the purest crystal. Lunare placed her slender fingers on either side of the luminous orb and looked deep inside with intense concentration.

She knew exactly what she was looking for, and she intended to find it. The beautiful sorceress focused her attention on the continent of Aniada. It was one of the more populous areas of the worlde and it was far closer than Ufaeria. She was sure to find the type of person she needed there, and she would not rest until she had done so.

Once Lunare's fingers were precisely positioned on either side of the crystal scrying ball, a low current of energy began to emanate from within the orb. Slowly the pure clear crystal began to coalesce into a milky white cloud, swirling first in one direction and then another.

The enchantress pursed her lips and moved her face closer to the scrying ball. Her silver-gray eyes stared unblinking into the moving wisps of white as she brought all of her considerable concentration to the task at hand. Lunare Ves'ule was searching for someone of a certain type to carry out a very special task for her. Aniada was the logical place to look. It was a heavily populated continent, visited by many races from all over the Worlde.

Lunare knew the type of person she wanted and she would settle for nothing less. It must be someone of Elven heritage, someone with knowledge of Ufaerian plants. Not too young. Someone who has lived long enough to experience some pain and disillusionment with life.

The powerful mind of the High Wizardess began to reach out through her scrying orb, lightly probing and testing the mental energies she encountered through time and space. Not that one. Too simple-minded. Nor that one, too brutish. Not that one, not a pure blood. Methodically, effortlessly, she sifted through the minds of hundreds, thousands of people going about their daily business throughout Aniada.

And then - the silver-haired Eroshen wizardess encountered a quite extraordinary mind. It stood out above the masses; educated, scholarly, an elementalist perhaps. A slow smile spread across Lunare's blood-red lips. "Ahhh yes. A Silver Elf. Excellent."

Lunare moved back into position over the orb, and resumed her scrying. She probed more deeply now, looking for other useful information. Most people never noticed her intrusion into their thoughts, but there was a chance that this one would sense her presence. She hoped he would.

As her powerful mind continued to test and tease the mind of the Silver Elf, the sorceress realized he was indeed cognizant of the intrusion, though he had no idea who or what was behind it.

"Wonderful!" She breathed the word aloud, delighted with her discovery. He is puzzled, concerned, yet curious too. Lunare began to probe a little more deeply now, catching glimpses of old memories, some perhaps half-forgotten by the elf himself. Ahhhh. He has suffered... both physically and mentally, yet he is able to compensate... he is gifted...

The more she learned of her subject, the more convinced she became that he was the one she needed for her task. Now all she needed to do was convince the Silver Elf.

With a clever twist of her mental energies, the beautiful enchantress began to plant the seed. It was subtle but compelling. If successful, the elf would begin to feel the need to travel north to the farthest reaches of the Ice Krowne. It would not be an immediate compulsion, just a passing thought at first that would gradually grow into a near-obsession.

Lunare closed her silvery eyes and began to transmit her powerful subliminal messages. The Ice Krowne is yer destiny. All that yew desire is here... come... come... yew know it is the path yew must take. There is much to learn and do... Over and over the thoughts were repeated. In most subjects they would quickly worm their way into the deepest recesses of the mind driving them to do her bidding, but Lunare knew it might take longer with this one. He was different. She would have to watch him closely, perhaps repeat the process, to ensure his path would ultimately lead to her doorsteps.

Gradually she withdrew her mind-link leaving the elf in peace - for now. She sat in the twilight shadows of her laboratory feeling exhilarated, anxious to check on his progress in the morrow. Lunare Ves'ule adored a new project.

After busying herself elsewhere in her sprawling castle for a time, Lunare ascended the spiral stairway to her scrying tower above the laboratory. Her curiosity had pulled her back. Had her telepathic suggestions begun to take hold in the Silver Elf's mind?

The sorceress began the ritual once more, calling upon the power of the scrying ball to find her subject again. Having previously established a mental pathway through the spatial ether, it was now faster and easier to locate him a second time.

Ah yes. He is in the same place I left him. But what's this? Someone has joined him. Lunare consulted a sphere swirling in the air close by, checked several coordinates, then looked back into her crystal orb. Of course. He is in an inn. There are many around him. Her exceptional magick was tuning in to several very unusual minds in close proximity to the Silver Elf.

"Why I do believe there is a Wolvian in the tavern. Such turmoil in his thoughts!" She spoke aloud to herself, pleased with the new discovery. She was intrigued by the primitive flashes of emotion she detected. "What an interesting subject he would make." On a whim, Lunare began to send powerful thoughts to test the creature's mind. Yew wish to travel to the far North. Yer future lies within the snowy peaks of the Ice Krowne... yew will be rewarded with gold and knowledge... She felt confident the thoughts would take hold faster with this one than in the Silver Elf. But then yew never knew with beasts. They could be unpredictable.

Lunare turned her thoughts back to the elf who seemed engaged in coversation with a ... shapeshifter? Was there no end to unusual subjects in Aniada? She smiled to herself, though only with her lips. Her pale eyes were completely devoid of humor.

For now, the wizardess would give the Silver Elf another little "push" toward his destiny. She began the process, sending powerful images through the etherway. Yes, yew will want to start planning yer journey right away. Yew will need supplies and warm clothing. The Ice Krowne is filled with knowledge waiting to be discovered. She appealed to his intellectual curiosity. And yew may wish to have company on yer long trek northward. Someone who can exist easily in the cold, track through ice and snow, scent the winds... perhaps a... Wolvian.

There. It was done. If all went as expected, the Wolvian and the Silver Elf would find each other in the inn and strike up a conversaton about the Ice Krowne. And perhaps the interesting shapeshifter would be intrigued enough to come along as well. Lunare was well pleased at the prospect of having not one, but several new subjects on which to work her special ... persuasive ways.
