Worlde Arcane: Aniada: Saghane Swamp: The Lorimar Road 14: The Festing Lanes

Each section of the Lorimar Road spans a approximately a full days' ride, or roughly two days' march afoot.
The least favorite extense of the Lorimar (except perhaps the Goblin Stretch in northern Aniada) meanders along the edge of the stinking Saghane Swamp. Marsh gases billow in thick foggy wafts along these lanes, bringing in summer mosquitos and midges, and in winter herds of the poisonous graytoad. Traffic moves quickly here, often declining to camp, but pressing on through the nights, the faster to escape this miserable avenue.
•Northwestward travel leads to Knight’s Walk, farther down the highway 'tis four days' ride to Terajin
•Southwestward travel leads to Seabreeze Road, 'tis three days' ride on to Seven Oaks

~Therul, report!~

Therul jumped up as though stung, ready and awake to take on the threat.....and the threat was a monotonous report!!!

He sat back down against the tree and then took his amulet in his hand, this made it visible to the others of the group, althoguh none were looking in his direction as yet. The amult glowed blue and it's power was enabled.

~Yes First Seeker, unfortunately nothing new, there's not a lot I can do to encourage these people to come to New Galvomore, they have their own mission, in fact some of them have different goals and paths, it seems pure luck that they happened to fidn each-other on this road, there are certainly interesting stories here and news worth knowing, there are more Daemons and Necromancers on the loose, this may suggest why the Chamber of the Aware has been acting up, "He" is returning early....but what do I know, I'm only a Seeker!~

There was a pause as the First Seeker took in what Therul had said.

~Yer certain yew can't encourage any to come?~

~No not really, who am I to them but some smelly stranger who could be insane for all they know, those who do know of Galvomore only know it as a ruin, a relic from the past, and many may not have heard of it at all, I'm sure they'd find it an interesting place, in fact one of them has a pair of daggers that he may find the answer to in Galvomore, but again, he goes to where he believes he has to, who am I to change his mind?~

Another pause....

{~Yew think too little of yerself, First Seeker out~}

The amulet stopped glowing, all of this conversation went unheard, however if any in the party have a connection to the Spirit Worlde they would have clearly heard what was said by Therul, but not the "First Seeker".

Deciding that he was not going to rest any more Therul stood, stretched, checked himself to make sure that most of his knives and daggers were in the right place then took a ration from an inside pocket and started to eat.

What may have startled any observer is the fact that what he ate was not meat or bread, but the flesh of an unusual form of mushroom.

While preparing his things for the journey ahead, Falcon felt sad and almost broke down. He realy did not know what to do, should he go with Orein or stay with Colt and Halja? His choise would have been alot easier if Halja and company had a true goal in mind, instead of going to Seven Oaks just to be going there.

Falcon needed some real advise, he looked at everyone in the camp. He new Therul wanted him to go to this city of his, but right now that was out of the question. He new Orein needed help, and wondered what Colt would do.

With sad eyes he slowly walked to where Colt and Orein were talking, and sat down next to Colt. "I need some advise, for i dont realy know what to do." Falcon told him.

Colt fell quiet when Falcon approached, glancing at the boy when he sat down next to him. He tucked away the cross in a safe place somewhere on his body. He'd learned well enough how to secrete things about his person when he didn't want them going missing. Things like that tended to be draw-cards for bandits or worse when they were in plain view. He would decide later whether or not he'd wear it and if he did, it would likely still not be in plain sight.

"Ask away, Falcon, but I can only say, the only person who can decide for you is yourself. I am not the best person to ask for advice. I cannot even follow my own at times," he murmured.

Falcon gave a nod to Colt as if he understood. "I had a dream last night from my goddess, she said i would not find my answers going to Seven Oaks. I dont know what to do, Orein needs help. But yew have been so good to me and i know yew better then he. And i like yew, yer a good friend Colt and i dont realy want to leave yew."

Falcon realy did not know if he could make it on his own, with out Colts help. "My decision would be alot easier if yew new where yer going after Seven Oaks. I even thought about going home to Kioko Rinn for awhile tell a new lead comes to light."

He looked at Colt sadly, "What would yew do if yew were me? I know there are dwarves and scholars all over the worlde and my goddess did not command i not go to Seven Oaks? I just dont know if im able enough to be on my own yet with someone i dont know."

Orein nodded to Colt and then smiled to Falcon as he excused himself. He knew that the road ahead for Falcon would be for his own choosing of whether or not he would actually go to Terajin with Orein or not.

"I will finish getting my horse ready, I would like to say my goodbyes soon, as I am wishing to be on the road as soon as daylight breaks. Yew are welcome to chose either path."

He looked to where Breeze had been, and noted that Lanno must have left sometime during his rest. He could not blame the Hafling, just as Terrance and Eddellyn had also left on their own paths. It was seeming more likely that Orein was destined to walk his path alone.

He rubbed his head, and faked a smile.

"It seems that I may very well be heading to Terajin alone at this rate, but this is the path I have I have chosen, as yew are to choose yers Falcon. At anyrate I will be tending to Yah-jin now."

Orein raised his hand and walked off towards his horse, and began to pack the rest of his supplies and camping gear. He steadied Yah-jin and patted the horse on his muzzel then lowered his head.

"Well Yah-jin, buddy, will yew at least stay with me till Terajin. It will be a tough ride for the two of us. I am not sure we can even make it on our own, but we have to try."

Yah-jin trotted the ground, and Orein smiled a little, but his heart was feeling very heavy. He looked ominously at the road ahead, then pulled the compass out to see which direction it would tell him was the safest.

He closed his eyes and sighed

"Yeah... I thought as much..."

"Yew do have another option"

Therul said from where he lay against the tree.

"Come with me to New Galvomore, true it is not a place that yew would have heard of before and we are somewhat cut off from the reat of the worlde, but at the same time we have a lot of Lore that has been lost, and new arts that make us unique, believe me yew'll never see a place like New Galvomore no matter how hard yew look, nor will yew find it without my help, no-one gets into New Galvomore if they're not wanted."

It was a last effort, but all he could do, should they refuse, then he'd just go back to his day job....Seeking.

Colt was slow in replying and perhaps it was just as well because everybody else seemed happy to put in their money's worth for Falcon. Orein said it was Falcon's choice, no truer words were said; Drimgal had woken and was watching, as if his own actions hinged upon the answer to Falcon's question and the smelly Therul offered up what he could, another choice.

"To be honest, Falcon. I am not sure even I want to return to Seven Oaks. I feel... I needed to get out of the city but... I seem only to be trekking back and forth. Orein is right, I guess. I have to move forward... I have not been moving at all," he murmured.

He withdrew the cross and gazed at it in his hand before looking up at Falcon again. "You cannot follow others, Falcon. You have only just met Orein but you did not know me once, either. Some things are stronger than friendships and if there is a task you must undertake, do it. You will only feel cheated if you don't do what you feel you must. Follow Orein, follow me although I am not sure I would recommend my path or go with Tharul over there but it has to be your choice, Falcon. Me?" He looked towards Halja and Saber. Perhaps his path wasn't with them at all. He wasn't going anywhere but around in circles. He needed to stop.

He reached out and squeezed Falcon's shoulder. "I think you will be fine, just think before you act, hard as it is sometimes... but it's worth it in the end. Sometimes there's a balance between thinking and acting, I can't tell yew what that is. I think too much at times, it's held me back." He tucked the cross away once more. "Weigh up your options and choose what's right for you, not everybody else." He stood up then, and moved away to rummage through the supplies they had for something small to eat and a drink from the water-skin, giving Falcon the space he needed to think. He had his own decisions to make.

Falcon sat there after Colt had moved away, Colt was right. Falcon had to make his own choise and after talking he just had.
Falcon walked up to Colt and put a hand on his shoulder. "Im going to miss yew, hope i see yew again sometime. Yew have been a good friend."

With that Falcon moved away back to his horse to finish getting ready for the trip with Orein. Drimgal seemed to be watching him and want to talk, so Falcon waved him over. He looked over at Therul "Sorry, mabe another time if im back this way yew could take me to this city of yers."

Therul just sat and waited, he wasn't that dissapointed, trying to lead a bunch of amateurs through a dangerous swamp was not what he was wanting to do, if they all decided to go their own way it was nothing to him, his boss might be a bit miffed but no harm done.

"Oh yuck!" the Hafling cried out as he stepped into a puddle of thick muck that pulled off his boot. In the early morning hours, he'd decided to lead Breeze to a nearby stream to water him and clean himself up. Outdoor travel in the forest was a lot messier work than sailing. Unfortunately, he'd lost track of time watching a couple of squirrels fight over some acorns, and not realized that the sun was well up into the sky. "Shoot - Orein!"

Lanno pulled his boot out of the mud and did his best not to step in the puddle with his bare foot. He hopped around on one foot, doing his best to keep his balance, and was successful until he actually got the boot back on again.

At which point he fell into the puddle. "This is interesting. I came down here to get myself cleaner. Not this," he said sadly as he got to his feet. Lanno did his best to clean himself off, though he missed a big blob of mud that had dried on the back of his head, and headed back to the camp.

As the others came into view, Lanno waved to Orein, his usual grin plastered on his face. "Sorry I took so long. I wanted to go down to the stream to ahh... err...get Breeze some water. Yew ready to go, Orein?"

Colt considered a lot of things after Falcon had said his goodbyes and looked towards Halja and Saber. The cat would protect her. As much as he'd worked to free the beast... the cat-boy or whatever it really was, it didn't want freedom exactly. It just wanted a better companion and he guessed it had found that in Halja. Saber and Halja would care for each other... and he really didn't think he was needed. He'd simply tagged along. He glanced down at his hip, looking at the bandaging tucked into the rent in the hip of his leggings. It was well covered, not bleeding. He looked towards the swamp. He'd had worse and he was tired of walking in circles.

There was commotion as Orein's companion appeared again. He looked a little worse for wear, not as clean as he had been and... oh dear... Colt suppressed a smile and tore a few damp leaves from one of the nearby trees, walking over to Lanno. "You might want to wipe the back of yer head," he murmured then turned away to approach Therul.

"I honestly do not know if what I am doing is right... but I do not want to follow the road any longer. It's taking me nowhere. If you're willing to lead, I'll go to this city you keep talking about." He really didn't know if he should or not but he needed to do something and maybe doing this, something that was completely out of character for him, might be what he needed to start moving forward, get out of the rut that he had been in.

Falcon gave Drimgal a small smile, "I would love to have yew along, but dont know how adventurous it will be" He said. Then Lanno reapeared and Falcon laughed "On second thought it might be more then i can handle." Falcon told Drimgal.

Falcon had finished his packing and was ready whenever Orein and Lanno were, he also would like to get a early start. He turned to Drimgal once more. "This is a decision i cant make for yew"
Then he looked at Colt, he felt a bit sad. He was hopping Colt would go with him, but everyone had there own course in life. Falcon would miss him. Now everyone seemed to be going there own ways.

Therul leaped up from his sitting position, opened his mouth, closed it, opened it again and then closed it as he realised that he was doing a fish impression.

"Yer coming to see the City?.....right, well I guess I'll have to cover some ground rules, for one thing the horse can't come, we don't have any way of transporting horses from the surface to the city, socondly I'll have to fashion yew a wrap to keep that wound secure from the swamp water as there are no roads to the city entrance....yet...oh and do yew have any issue with heights or long drops?"

Therul was surprised that this person would come when everyone else appeared to be going elsewhere, still 1 was better than none and would certainly mean that he wouldn't have to deal with the First Seeker being in such a bad mood.

Colt looked around at the others with their horses and shook his head. "Don't have a horse to bring," he replied. Until Orein and Lanno had turned up, Falcon had been the only one with a horse... and Colt hadn't felt any inclination in obtaining a horse since the Lamians had made a meal out of Epitome. That seemed like a life-time ago.

"No, I've been to some interesting heights," he murmured and of course, when there's height there's always a long drop. That didn't necessarily mean he was always comfortable with them but he could deal with them when he had to."

Again he looked around and then decided, moving around, to collect up a few of the supplies. Not much, very little really, leaving the lion's share to Halja and any of the others to take their share. He could have taken more, more of his share but he didn't. He hadn't helped pay for any of it. Coin wasn't something he possessed; he doubted he would need it in the swamp although the city would be problematic but with Therul as a personal guide he'd deal with that when he got to it. He had no idea why he'd made this choice but he had to do something and this was completely at odds with anything he normally would have done... but wasn't that the point of dragging oneself out of a rut?

Falcon was glad Drimgal decided to come, it made Falcon feel good to have a expert archer with them. He did not think Orein and Lanno would realy be able to protect themselves, so Falcon was glad for the help if they were attacked. He thought him and Drimgal could take on just about anything they ran across.

Falcon moved over to Saber and Halja and said his goodbyes, then told Ezekiel to take care of himself.
Falcon then along with Swifty walked over to Lanno and Orein, "Looks like yew wont be alone after all Orein, Drimgal is also coming with if its ok. So now we have a party of four." Falcon said.

"Ah okay, just so many horses, I figured one of them might be yers, I have an idea on how to protect yer wound."

Therul took out his water skin, checked it for size against Colt's bandage and then emptied it (drinking some first so as not to waste the water completely), he then drew a knife, slit the skin, reversed it knelt down in front of colt.

"With yer permission?"

He warpped the skin around colt's bandage tucking the bottom and the top of the improvised sealed cover and then tied both ends tightly with some cord.

"Well that sould do it, it might hurt and cut off the blood supply slightly, but believe me it's better than letting the swamp water infect yer wound, once we get to the city ruins we can take the wrap off anyway, it'll only take half a day to get there."

Orein had been brushing down Yah-jin in preparation to leave when a familiar voice startled him.

"La...Lanno!? But I thought yew..." The boy's voice cracked a little, but he shook his head pushing off some invading emotion he didn't want to show. "Ne..nevermind, I am just glad yer here."

Orein gave Lanno a big smile when they were joined by Falcon and Drimgal, suddenly the prospect of Orein's day wasn't seeming so dreary.

"Of course! If yew two are willing to make the journey with us, we would be more than happy to have yew along." He smiled and bowed to Drimgal respectfully.

He thoughtfully patted Yah-jin then pulled the map out of a satchel and turned to the three of them.

"I believe we are ready to leave once... Lanno is... ready. I have studied the direction we are traveling the best I can, and believe I can get us on the right path, unless anyone of yew knows the road and wants show the way."

"I'm good to go," Lanno answered, as he brushed most of the dried mud out of his hair, but left his hair standing outward and upward in a couple of directions. He hopped up onto Breeze - he noticed it did not take as much effort to mount the horse as it had when he'd first started riding. Maybe I'm getting the hang of land travel, after all, he thought. He nodded to the others they were leaving, and then directed his mount to stand next to Yah-Jin.

"I'm glad to be here too, Orein. Much better than down by the stream. Its very muddy down there, and not a place to be if yer looking to clean up. Yew know, I remember once my brothers and I made such a mess of the house, my mom wouldn't let us play inside for a week. And one day, it rained so much our hands that it turned the beach all mucky. Our hands and faces were covered - just like this!" he added excitedly as he held up his hands for his friend to see. "I really miss the beach. And mom..." The Hafling sighed, and then looked expectantly at Falcon and Drimgal.

"Did I mention I was ready to go?"

"I'll take front if yew want, sense i just came from Terajin. I know a place that serves great carrot pie." Falcon asked Orein.

Yes, Falcon was ready for a new experience. Even though he had Drimgal along, he was already thinking of how to protect Orein and Lanno should they run into Orc's or worse.

Colt nodded to Therul's offer and allowed himself to be patched up a little better than had already been done. He was a little concerned about the blood flow situation. Moving would keep the blood circulating but he realised his leg would probably ache a lot. Oh, this was going to be such an enjoyable journey, he thought cynically, but he wasn't going to back out now.

He looked at the others once he was set. They all looked set to leave. "Excuse me a moment," he said to Therul and moved towards the other group, putting a reassuring hand on Falcon's forearm (since he was already astride on Swifty). "Think before you act, Falcon, you'll do fine." He moved over towards Orein and gazed at the youthful looking being. He shook his head. "You have given me something I could never repay. All I can say is thank-you, Orein." He moved back a bit and looked at them all, offering one of his rare smiles. "Safe journeys." With that he returned to Therul. "Ready when you are."

(OOC:

I'm back in business for real now; a lot of catching up to do. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to pick it up here... Is it alright if Halja moves to New Galvomore as well?)

Halja and Saber had sought each other's comfort in the night. The road south had proven difficult, with bandits, demons and whatnot, and it had taken its toll on them. While they were both used to hardship, living in the city compensated this with small amounts of comfort to be gained, the likes of which were wholly absent in the wild, even close to a thoroughfare like the Lorimar.

When morning had come, Halja woke late, the sun poking in from a partly overcast sky. She stretched out her arms, still stiff all over from the rough sleep outdoors. It appeared the group, which had grown to great proportions, was now coming apart once more. In a morning daze, she and Saber accepted leave-takings from Drimgal and Falcon, who both earned complimentary snuggles from Saber. Saber was especially sorry to see Falcon go, and deliberated for a moment whether he should join with the boy and leave Halja. The boy-tiger had always sensed something awry about the half-blackened woman, but she had been good to him, and was officially his owner. Being placed in such a position was difficult, but in the end, it had to be. He rubbed his broad snout against Falcon's flank as a goodbye.

Halja decided to leave them to it, for a while, and she approached Colt and Therul. She had heard the conversation going back and forth for a while, and this prospect of visiting a different city sounded appealing to her. "I'm sorry I never got the opporunity to present myself properly. My name is Halja, and if it's not too much bother, we'd like to join yew. Saber there is my tiger companion, and very trustworthy at that, and then there is Ezekiel, a young magicker. What say ye?"

Therul looked at Halja, she appeared to be dressed as nobility, which was something that New Galvomore's society did not recognise, there was little place for people who could only talk and do no physical work, the city tended to be unforgiving on them too.

Still if another person wanted ot come with him so be it.

"Of course yer welcome to come, although we'll be travelling through the swamp for a bit, I'm afraid I can't offer yer fine clothes any protection or guarantee against wha tthe swamp waters will do to them.....and errr....please try and keep Saber away from the Duvals, judging by his size I'm sure he'd try to hunt them."

Deciding that this was all he'd get, not that 3 people and 1 big cat thing was that bad really Therul headed off confidently into the swamp, clearly knowing where he was going, although the morning mist off the swamp obscured any visibility of their heading.

This was news though, Therul reached into his tunic and grasped the amulet.

~First Seeker, I have good news, 3 of the travellers have chosen to come with us, one prings a pet too, something called a "Tiger"?~

Therul got no response, which usually meant that the First Seeker was busy or asleep.

"I read the next stretch can be very dangerous... if this swamp wasn't already... but we should be on the lookout for gobbies, orcsies, and all sorts of fun creatures that wish to have us for dinner. At least Falcon hoped, he was trying to keep a cheerful mood. "To get a good start, i think we should gallop a bit. What say yew." Falcon addressed the question to everyone.

(OOC:

Hey guys, due to Halja's insistence I will try to be getting back into this group as soon as I can! For now though I understand Halja's been dragging Ezekiel along with her and that's perfectly fine with me. Thanks!)

Lanno nodded to Falcon. He wasn't sure he wanted to stay too much longer in this part of the forest, and he was looking forward to seeing Terajin. The Hafling was also glad to be travelling with others, especially if the forest was going to get dangerous. Still, he had his short swords if he needed them. Hopefully, it wouldn't come to that. "Let's go then - Breeze is getting restless."

Orein nodded and steadied Yah-jin.

"Looks like we have some company now Yah-jin." he smiled and patted the horse, then with a light nudge, he urged the horse forward.

He would have been happy to see the swamplands go, but the area ahead was just as perilous. He could only wish that they would make it through without incident.

Falcon lead the way, keeping an eye out for trouble. He had just met Lanno and Orein and he would do all he could to see them safe. Falcon did not know what Oreins quest was, but Falcon was willing to help him in it. His own quest could wait awhile. He was just glad for these new friends.

Lanno followed after Falcon, sticking close to Orein as they made their way even further into the forest. He too, was happy to leave the swamps behind - not that he minded water, but this place was dark and still. The air smelled different too - there was still the earthy scent of the forest, but it was stagnant, and reminded him of moldy fruit. The Hafling looked back one last time as they left the swamp behind them, and then to the road ahead.

(FROM:

A ways off the road near the swamp)

With urgency he waddled away from the swamp. He did not want to be there any more; that was all there was to it.

In-land, as was familiar.
