Worlde Arcane: Aniada: Seven Oaks: Outskirts of Seven Oaks: The Lorimar Road 16: The Seven Oaks Mile

Each section of the Lorimar Road spans a approximately a full days' ride, or roughly two days' march afoot.

Just outside Seven Oaks, the Lorimar is a deep and wide roadway cut through low rocky coastal hills. Hunting is poor here, for the Sevenoakers have plundered hares and bucks and grasspigs near to extinction ... but wildflowers bloom along the rocks to both sides, and many species of cooking-herbs can be found for the taking.
•Northeastward travel leads to Seabreeze Road, farther on up the highway 'tis six days' ride to Terajin
•Westward travel leads directly to to Seven Oaks: The Main Gates, a days' ride away

Tuesday, August 4, 2009 - 2:07 am GMT Edit | Link |

There was little talking that day. The bandit pushed her companions hard into keeping a brisk pace, riding throughout the day and into the early evening. She was intent on making up the time they lost stopping at Zorga's, though Eddellyn wouldn't categorize the night spent at the hut as a waste, she just wanted to get to Terajin sooner rather than later.

By the time dusk fell, they were nearly to the section of the Lorimar many referred to as the Seabreeze road, named for the winds that came off the Vericul. It would be the most sensible area to stop and find a place to rest for the night. Any further and they would be spending their first true night on the road sleeping under the eaves of the Dark Forest. An experience best saved for their second night, the bandit thought wryly. Edde slowed Yah-Jin and fell in alongside the others. "I think we've made good progress for today. What do yew think? By the by the next clearing we come to, we stop for the night?"

There hadn't been much opportunity to speak since leaving the alchemist's cabin. Sasha had been quiet, Terrance seemed like the quiet type, and Edde always kept Yah-Jin just far enough ahead of Breeze that Lanno was unable to speak to the Elf or Orein. That left Lanno alone to his thoughts, most of which centered around why he had offered to come along. His legs and back were sore, he was bored, and he hadn't been able to speak all day. Lanno had sometimes wondered what a 'real' forest would look like, and now he knew - it was quiet, still and full of trees. No waves lapping against the hull of the ship, no light reflecting off of the water, even the sun only infrequently made an appearance in the few gaps between trees. Elves often live in forests; I wonder if it rubs off on them? he wondered.

Then Edde looked back at them and mentioned they would soon be stopping for the night. Lanno's face lit up. Edde must be an exception - she's too interesting to have spent too much time in a place like this. "Sounds good! I'm afraid sea legs aren't the best for horse riding."

"I must agree with yew, Master Lanno," Sasha sighed, already dismounting. "Me own sea legs, nay, me whole self prefers something not so rough. I am most ready for a rest."

The ride had been incredibly quiet to Sasha. She had spent the whole trip trying to decide how to tell the others the truth, and no one else had much to say. She decided that they must have been considering their gifts. She was grateful for her own, and grateful for the rest, but unease hid in the trees. Sasha was oddly tense in the shadow of the woods. Maybe she just needed a swim. Some day she would find a lake where she could swim again. Where no one could find her.

"Master Lanno, have yew any tales of the water that yew might tell us?"

Anyways, this walking stuff is getting old fast. Wanna hitch a ride on the next wagon going our way?"

(FROM:

Outskirts of Seven Oaks: Zorga's Hut)

Terrance rode along the road behind Eddellyn, his own thoughts racing in his mind. He had found out his own next destination - Thapelel. He had to find that shrine Zorga mentioned...so why was he here, traveling north along the Lorimar Road, when he really wanted to head south, across the sea?

Because he needed a boat, and Eddellyn had a boat, or least she had access to one. Which meant he was stuck following her for a while yet. That was ambivalent - Eddellyn was as good a traveling companion as Terrance could ask for. She was strong and capable, didn't ask meaningless questions, and kept to her own business. However, Terrance was busy with his own quest - recovering his lost memories.

The path to our future does not always lie in our past, but our present. Zorga had told him that.

It didn't take a scholar or fortune teller to decipher Zorga's message: the old hermit was advising him to continue along on Edde's quest, at the expense of prolonging his own. Personally, Terrance didn't mind one way or the other. He figured he could stay with them a while longer, at least until Edde figured out their next destination. He'd stay with the group for as long as they were traveling in the same general direction.

When the group came to a suitable campsite, Terrance dismounted and allowed Sprint to graze while he observed the area. There was a black patch of earth near the middle of the clearing. Walking closer, Terrance spotted the remains of an old campfire, soot and ashes covering a small pile of branches and wood that had not ignited completely, surrounded by a small ring of rocks to contain it. That made the swordsman feel more secure - campsites used by previous travelers generally made safer spots of rest, but it was good not to be too complacent.

Terrance walked over to Eddellyn to inquire about the night watch, when he stopped, cocking his head to one side. He thought he could hear voices approaching, saying something or not about fighting and play-fighting. He sent another inner telepathic message to Edde.

Do yew hear those voices? It seems we're not the only travelers abroad tonight.

Eddellyn reined her horse to a halt alongside of Lanno and Sasha but before she slid off Yah-Jin, she wanted to reassure Orein. They had spoken little to each other through the day, despite the fact they rode together. If anyone looked over at her just, they would have seen her surveying the area with an assessing look, but with her mind she spoke to the Fae. Orien, if yew ever need me but I'm not there - just try calling for me. I may be able to hear yew more ways than one. Leaving it at that, the elf hopped down to the ground.

With a gentle touch, she brushed a hand across Yah-Jin's nose and after a quickly murmured her thanks to the animal, she added a few words asking that he wait for Orein to dismount before wandering too far. Despite the fact the horse had not been broken when she had purchased it; he had turned out to be very cooperative and understanding. Her steely gaze softened as Yah-Jin's head swung around to nudge playfully against her shoulder. It was easier for her to get along with animals than most people. Untying her pack from the back of the horse, Edde gave him another pat over his head before walking to the center of the small clearing they had chosen for the night.

Letting her pack drop softly to the ground, the bandit paced the area taking in every detail. For the fire ring in the center of the clearing she spared only a glance. Her primary concern was to examine the trees edging the clearing. Slipping along the perimeter, Eddellyn would stop now and then to pay particular attention to something on the ground or in the trees before continuing her path until she stood alongside of Lanno and Sasha once more. The pair moved tensely, obviously ill at ease in the forest and the elf suddenly regretted pushing them so much that day. It was clear neither were used to spending so much time in a hard saddle.

"My apologies for the pace today, we will not travel so fast or so far tomorrow. " Eddellyn crossed back to the fire ring and nudged at a rock with the toe of her boot. Dropping into a crouch, her eyes studied the ashen remains of fires gone by. At one point during her examination, her head lifted sharply and she glanced to the distance, her eyes narrowed in concentration. The intense expression starting to cloud over her face grew fiercer as the fighter spoke to her telepathically. She braced her hands against her knees slowly stood. Forgoing to use telepathy herself, she nodded succinctly and replied aloud, thinking it better the others were aware as well.

"It is best to remain cautious at all times. We are close to Seven Oaks still and the Lorimar is a busy thoroughfare - both points a reminder that this area can be heavily preyed upon by thieves and the like."

The words were grim, a warning for friends safety but at the same time, her eyes flashed silver, in wry self-amusement. At one time, the territory between Seven Oaks and Terajin had served as her home and she had been among the dangers lurking on the Lorimar. "It would probably be best to only have a small fire tonight and while we rest the night alongside the road, we'll need to keep watch through the night."

Llwe had been laughing at Adam's reaction until . . . "Um, yeah. Slavers." The thought wasn't pleasant, even for a boy. It was worse for a girl, and that was exactly what someone would find Llwe to be, if they got a look at her beneath her clothes.

Glad that Adam had changed the subject as quickly as he had, Llwe was also fine with his suggestion. Although she wondered aloud, "Yew think a driver'll let that wolf around his pack animals?" Llwe, for what it was worth, was becoming accustomed to the wolf's presence, but she couldn't imagine a horse or an ox much liking him. "But sure, I'd take a ride. Pick somebody."

Llwe wasn't entirely sure if Adam meant to ask for the ride, or just hop into the back of a wagon where the driver wasn't paying much attention. Either way, she'd stick with him.

Thursday, August 13, 2009 - 6:25 pm GMT Edit | Link |

Eddellyn moved about the tiny clearing gathering wood to build a small fire for the night, leaving the others to rest. With each armful she collected, she would return to the fire pit to carefully stack the kindling into a neat pile before searching for more. After she had stacked three such piles, she took one of the bundles and arranged them within the fire ring and taking a flint from her pocket, she set the lit the meager campfire. Once the flames were happily licking away at the firewood, she pushed back from the fire and rose to her feet.

With half-hooded eyes she watched each of her travelling companions for a minute, observing their interactions with each other and their weary expressions. Again she couldn’t push aside the guilt of driving them too hard on their first day. At this pace, they would be too weary to do much more than rest each evening, even on their arrival in Terajin. Where her preference would be to immediately seek out the person that had called her there. Although, she couldn't help concede that the last point would not be such a bad thing. Eddellyn had the feeling she was going to want her privacy when she sought out the person that had called her to city.

The others had unpacked some of the food that Zorga provided and were preparing to eat their evening meal, but the bandit gave them a small wave declining. She'd had a large meal at the start of her day and enough snacks in between that she could go without for the night. Instead, Eddellyn indicated to Terrance that she would take the first watch and slipped away to the trees bordering the clearing. Melting into the forest shadows, she lurked among the trees for a time before finding a large tree to lean against. Sitting at its' base, she wedged her shoulders into a hollow in the trunk as she listened to the evening sounds and considered her present circumstances.

We are going to need to take it slower tomorrow, perhaps limiting ourselves to stopping in the mid-afternoon. Yet at that rate it will take us several days longer to make Terajin... Unless... Her brows pulled together and Edde tapped her fingers against her knee as she weighed a sudden thought. Unless she made other plans.

Orein dismounted and examined the clearing, happy to be on solid ground once again. Truth be told it took all his strength to make this far, the day of traveling had taken its toll. Even so, he still happily helped with the gear and setting up the camp then nestled in near where the fire would be and where he would eventually sleep for the night.

He wondered how much further to their destination it would be, as he stared at the compass that had been given to him as a gift... It was a lovely trinket.. and he did wonder about what he had been told it did.

From the northeast rode a man, cloaked in white, and astride a large, angry-looking warmare. He whistled as he kept his calm gray eyes to the sky, the cheerful grin on his face so wide it seemed artificial.

He was unaware of it, but the warmare bore a second rider. The spook that haunted Calamity was having far more deleterious effects on the mysterious healer than they would an ordinary mortal.

Perhaps it was the strong clear sunlight after the night's storm or some other reason, but the spectre which dogged the warmare and rider would not or could not manifest itself as more than the faintest ripple of the daytime airs and possibly a sense of unease and unwellness for horse and healer.

Sasha trotted up behind the healer, conscious of a strange puddle of cold that grew the closer she came to him. The hairs on the back of her neck stood on edge and she felt her stomach churn a bit. Something made her skin crawl. Perhaps, she'd caught a cold somewhere along the road.

"Hey healer," she called, pulling the roan nag alongside him. "Yew left yer patient back at that inn. Is everything uh, alright?" She asked, observing the very strange look on his face.

The healer started at the sound of Sasha's voice; it would have been as if he had been lost in his thoughts, but from the blank smile on his face, it would be hard to believe that there was anything on his mind outside of staying astride on his increasingly belligerent mount.

"Alright?" he echoed, confused by the bladeswoman's question, though the expression was quickly traded for a sunny grin. "All is right, milady Sasha. Right, all?" he turned and asked of an invisible audience.

The white-cloaked healer blinked madly for a second, then seemed to regain his senses. He looked beleaguered, weary - very much unlike the infinitely energetic wanderer Sasha and Lofis had encountered in Terajin. "I... am sorry, milady Sasha. I fear I am... under the weather, as thine people are wont to say. What a strange phrase... art thou folk not always under the skies?"

Even as he spoke, the warmare beneath him seemed to be egging Sasha and Lofis' own steeds on, urging them to keep moving. Whatever was addling the healer's mind was making Calamity increasingly more irritable. Ignoring all other bands of travelers on the road, horse and rider carried on to Seven Oaks.

Since Eddellyn was taking the first watch, Terrance settled down to make himself comfortable. He wanted to get some decent sleep before she woke him to take watch during the night. He was tired, but not overwhelmed with fatigue. He was used to hard riding - or at least, his body seemed to have fared well enough. But he could tell some of his other companions - Orien and Sasha in particular - were unaccustomed to the driving pace Edde had set.

He took a spot close to the fire, but also nearest the road, in the event undesirables were to come down the Lorimar while they slept. He kept his sword close to him while he lay down - a long-standing habit - and closed his eyes. His mind stayed awake for some time, musing over the day's events.

It took several attempts, but finally a farmer stopped his cart for the two young boys. The wolf was nowhere to be seen.

"Wheres yewse twos off to, eh? I gots a ways to plod here with my nag, but it sure beats walkn', eh? Hop in!"

Amanda (and Lew?) hopped right in, settling in the back of the small cart, feet dangling off over the road. "We're headed to Terajin where we gots family", she told the farmer. "Thanks for picking us up."

Llwe sat by Adam and leaned back against the cart's load. It felt good to ride, after walking as long as they had. She wondered about the wolf but knew better than to say anything about it with the farmer in earshot. Besides, it wouldn't bother Llwe any if the wolf was long gone. But she didn't think it was. A lot of dogs were smart enough to find their way, if they got separated from their masters, and Llwe was pretty sure wolves were even smarter.

And, so, Llwe remained silent while Adam made conversation with the man who'd picked them up -- that is, until 'weirdness' was mentioned. She looked at Adam, then turned to ask the farmer, "What do ya mean by weirdness, mister?"

A tanned hand held her arm in a vise-like grip, holding her in place while eyes black as obsidian bored into hers. The man that held her so firmly looked familiar, yet the bandit did not know his name. Black hair swirled about his face, revealing glimpses of the pointed ears that proclaimed his elven heritage. It was the first time she had such a clear glimpse of the one who haunted her dreams. Eddellyn struggled weakly but the longer her gaze was snared by her captor's the less she felt like struggling. Anger bubbled inside her but before she could find the words to voice her anger, the strange elf leaned closer and spoke.

Time is running out. Hurry to Terajin.

The angry words were there at last on the tip of her tongue and Eddellyn cursed the man in their shared language. The elven words were musical to the ear but harsh in their content.

Regret flickered across the face of the man, but he tightened his grip; it if had not been just a dream, Edde would expect bruises but then her experience has been that she would be marked when she awoke. She began to struggle again, her intent to break the hold - to wake up - and escape the command that had been given to her yet again. With a feeling of triumph, the bandit felt her captor's hold begin to slip, the sensation of waking up was coming over her.

Her lips curled into a grin of victory and she cursed the man yet again. Yew have no hold over me - I'll escape this dream and then I will come to Terajin. Come to mete out my revenge for the torment yew've given me. As she made the promise, her smokey gaze fired silver with strong emotion. The edges of Eddellyn's vision grew cloudy and she felt a moment's regret that she wouldn't be able to gloat over her threat for a moment longer. However, it meant the she had escaped the stranger's grip.

In the moments before she awoke, the captor loosed his hold from her arm and smiled wryly to himself. He expected no less from her.

Eddellyn opened her eyes quickly and took slow, even breaths as she tried to calm her racing heart. Instinctively, she lifted her left arm and stared at her wrist, expecting to note fingerprints from where she was held; though it was too dim to make out anything that was not vivid mark.

Sighing deeply she pushed her hair back over ears and slowly gained her feet. It was early morning and time to return to where the others slept. She'd dwell on this newest summons later.

Sasha slept too hard for any nightmares to venture her way, but not too hard to avoid the dawn stiffness. She moved her limbs slowly, trying not to agrivate any hidden sore spots. "By the seas..." she groaned. She would relish the chance to once again sleep in water, the most peaceful rest she'd ever had. Instead, she knew she was facing another long day's ride towards their destination.

Edde drew near the campsite looking exhausted and quiet. Though her face remained blank of emotions, Sasha sensed that her thoughts were spiraling. It would be rude to ask, though.

Instead, Sasha drew her cloak around her and sought out the comfort of a nearby stream. She rested on the bank, letting her bare feet float in the water. Even in a more uman form, the waters still called to her, still felt like home. Suddenly Sasha wanted nothing more than return to her first form so that she could live in the sea.

Perhaps one day she would return. She could still swim like a fish and even breathe under water. Maybe should could find a quiet cove to make a home in. For now, the trickling waters were a comfort as she laid against a tree. Sasha let herself remember life before the transformation, her family and her betrothed. She tried to picture what her life would be like at this moment had she not changed. It was a pleasant, easier life that she saw.

Regrets would do no good, she reminded herself. Instead she closed her eyes and enjoyed the simple pleasure of cool water on her feet.

Lanno woke late the following morning, stretching as he rose from his blanket. He wondered where Edde and Sasha had gone, but he hadn't heard anything unusual that might indicate something untoward had happened, so he shrugged. "I guess its time to get moving," he said out loud to himself, considering that Orein and Terrance were still both asleep. The Hafling looked up at the trees and marvelled at how well they blocked the morning light. He'd never thought of a forest as a 'dark place' before, but it certainly looked as though this one might be, especially since they were only just on its edge.

Lanno felt his stomach growl, so he dug through his backpack for some of the rations they'd purchased back in Seven Oaks. He started stuffing the food into his mouth and was surprised at how much he actually liked it. Spending as much time asea, he'd not grown accustomed to dried and salted food, but it actually tasted pretty good.

After a few minutes alone, Lanno looked around the campsite. It was getting pretty boring. "Hey, Orein, yew awake yet?" the Hafling asked, giving his friend a nudge...or two.

Where am I?

It was dark all around, which meant it was probably still nighttime. Terrance stood still where he was waiting until his eyes adjusted to the darkness. He was standing in the campsite, his four companions asleep on the ground nearby. He couldn't remember Edde waking him to take his watch but she must have, and then he had fallen asleep again.

Welcome back, puppet.

Yew again? What do yew want?

What we have always wanted, mindless puppet. Yew belong to us; now join us once again.

I belong to no one. I am my own man, and will serve no master!

Yew are foolish and naive, little puppet. Yew are already our slave. See yer four friends lying there? Kill them all.

Before Terrance could think up an appropriate insult, to his horror his feet began to walk towards his sleeping companions.

Yew see? Yew ARE our puppet, and we order yew to kill yer friends.

He stood over Lanno, and drew his sword. Terrance screamed in his mind to stop, but his body refused to heed any of his commands.

His sword plunged deep into Lanno, who let out a blood-curling scream. Orien, who was sleeping next to him, awoke with a start. With one swift backhanded slice, Terrance severed the young Fae's head off his shoulders.

Lanno, Orien, no! Gods, what have I done?

Exactly what we told yew to do, little puppet. The two females are still alive. Kill them!

No!

Despite his conscious mind, Terrance turned towards Sasha. The young woman tried to flee, but Terrance lunged forward, driving his sword straight into her heart from behind.

Hearing a voice behind him, Terrance turned and parried a blow from Eddellyn, who had drawn her dagger. Her eyes were black with murder.

Only one left, puppet. Kill!

Not her! Gods please, not Eddellyn. Stop this!

Skilled as Eddellyn was, his body parried her every attack with ease, often accompanied by a counter-strike. She was quickly being sliced to ribbons, and he hadn't even broken a sweat.

Enough play. Now kill her!

Seeing an opening, Terrance plunged his sword straight through her belly. She gasped, and the anger fled from her eyes, replaced by hurt and betrayal. Her lips forced out one single word before her life slipped away.

"Why..."

Pulling his sword out, she crumpled to the ground. Terrance felt sick to his stomach - or would have had his stomach been under his control. Only then did he realize he could move freely again.

Anger and hurt welled up inside of him, threatening to drive him mad. He had just killed...

"WHY!? Why did yew do this?"

To prove yew belong to us, little puppet. Yew could do nothing to stop us. Just accept yer fate, and join us.

No!

Terrance sat up, gasping for breath and looking around frantically. He noticed his companions sleeping soundly, undisturbed by anything. Terrance collapsed back onto the ground.

"Just a dream..."

--------------------------------------------------
A voice woke Terrance up the next morning. He lay on the ground with his eyes closed, for a moment, trying to identify the voice. It sounded like Lanno's.

He sat up, glancing around and his eyes rested on Lanno and Orien. He swallowed hard, remembering how in his dream he had murdered them in cold blood. Then another thought came to him.

"Eddellyn?" He looked around for her. "Why didn't she wake me up for my watch?" He stood up and started to pack up his belongings.

By Cloaked Elven Bandit, Edde (Eddellyn)

She returned to the campsite in time to spy Sasha slipping off toward the stream and the elven woman hesitated a moment, debating whether or not to follow the girl. A quiet moment to clean up before the start of their day would be welcome, as would a minute to speak to the young woman - to get to know her better. Thus far, Eddellyn had not had much chance to speak to the flame-haired woman. Careful not to disturb anyone, Eddellyn slowly edged around the clearing, slowing long enough to take particular note of Orein's complexion. The lad looked pale but otherwise appeared to be resting quietly; she was glad for it as he seemed to need his rest, but she wondered if the Fae would wake again with the same confusion he had exhibited the previous morning.

As she approached the stream, she noted that it looked like flowing silver in the low light of early morning, amidst the shadows of the forest, and Eddellyn stopped a few feet from the water as she took in the setting with appreciation. Unfastening her cloak, she cleared her throat softly and spoke to the other woman. "I hope yew don't mind; I wanted to take a moment to clean up before the others rose."

Without any further ado, she slipped her cloak from her shoulders and dropped it to the grass. Heedless of the dampness that clung to banks of the stream, the bandit crouched, kneeling to dip her fingers into the cool stream. Eddellyn angled her head lower toward the water and splashed the fluid up onto her face. Heedless of the shiver that shook her frame at the brisk sensation, Edde repeated the process several times until she felt that the grime had been cleaned from her face. Lifting her arm, she rubbed the excess water from her face before the bandit half-turned her head and gave Sasha a speculative look.

"I apologize for bringing yer horse back to yew after yew released it. I realize yew had no intention of spending so much time in the saddle. " Unused to making apologies to anyone, the elf shifted her gaze away and absently began brushing her fingers through her hair. Dimly she noted the raven locks were well below her shoulders, a length she had rarely- if ever -allowed it reach.

For a moment Eddellyn sat quietly, shifting only once when she heard her name being called in the clearing. However, the tone was not frantic and she sensed no danger in the area, so she did not immediately respond. Instead, she meet Sasha's gaze directly coming to a abrupt decision. "If yew'd rather, we can travel the rest of the distance to Terajin on foot. It may take longer but it would not be so tiring."

The elf rubbed a hand across the back of her neck and rose. "At the very least we can take a slower pace today," she added when the other woman hesitated in her response.

Eddellyn turned away from the stream, so she faced the direction of the clearing and cocked her head to one side as listened carefully to her other companions stirring. With something of a wry smile, she retrieved her cloak and glanced to Sasha. "Something for yew think on anyway… "

With a murmured excuse, she left Sasha and slipped through the trees, away from the clearing and the stream. Her backpack in hand, she was in search of a private place to change into some fresh clothing. Walking for several yards, she choose a secluded spot behind a large oak and shrubs. Looping the strap of the bag over a tree branch, Eddellyn opened her bag, searching through the few items she had packed. Many of them were clothes delivered to her at the Inn, sent from the Feann'ky ship. Lifting each piece, she held it up before her to examine each article critically, a grimace marking her features. She really should have paid more attention to the clothes when she packed them, they were no where near her usual style. Eddellyn unravelled a long strip of cloth, stretching it between both hands. What in the gods name is this meant to be? At least it is near to the colour I prefer.

Black and carefully embroidered with red thread, the exotic material reminded her of a tournament banner. A rueful sound escaped her. For all that she knew, it indeed was a banner - an item the wild elves could have easily 'appropriated'. It was also one of the few items that closest resembled something that could be worn as a top. At best, she could wrap it around herself to fashion a halter but it would leave too much of her pale skin bare for her peace of mind. Eddellyn tugged on one of her dark curls thoughtfully and reached for her satchel once more.

The next item the bandit withdrew was no better. This one was a fine green material that felt like silk and was as transparent as smoke. Edde sighed deeply. It was either wear the same thing she had been wearing for another handful of days, or wear one of the new items. She rest her forehead in her left hand and squeezed at her temples as she weighed the decision. Normally, it would not have been any choice at all, she would hands down prefer to keep wearing the same grungy outfit. However, circumstances changed - she was changing - and she no longer had the luxury to be the unobtrusive shadow stalking the night. I am not shrinking maiden. There is nothing that dictates I must wear certain clothes. Eddellyn tipped her chin upward as she gained courage from her thoughts. She clenched her fist as she paused to consider what the new clothes would reveal. Let them see the tattoos. Perhaps 'tis time I shared part of what lies for me in Terajin.

Fortified with a new sense of purpose, the elven woman shot a glance around the forest to ensure she was alone before she quickly stripped to the torso. Taking the black cloth from the pack, she tucked one end of the strip into the waistband of her breeches and carefully began to wind the dark fabric around her waist, until she reached her chest. Eddellyn hesitated only for a second before she brought the material upward across one breast and behind her neck before she pulled it back around, downward over the front create a crisscross pattern. Winding the loose end back up behind her neck, she quickly tied it off to create a sleeveless top. Once she was finished, the bandit held her arms out before her, vaguely taking note that even in the dim light her skin appeared pearlescent, it was so pale.

Except for my right arm, she thought wryly. The twisting runes of her branding wove in with the vines and flowers, stark against the white flesh, the black words of her crimes wound intricately through the various shades of green and interspersed purple flowers. Staring at her arm, Eddellyn experienced one small moment of self-doubt. If the sight of the tattoo was so disgusting to her, what would the others think? But she ground her teeth together as the voice of her dreams wafted through her mind, reminding her she had little choice in how she was marked. Let them think what they will.

Quickly, before she backed down from her decision, she stuffed the discarded tunics back into her satchel and took up her cloak, slinging both over her shoulder. Her stride determined, she returned to the clearing to join the rest of the group.

By the time Eddellyn had gotten back to the clearing, Terrance was fully packed up and suited up in his armour once more. He sat on the grass, sharpening his sword against a stone he carried for that very purpose. When he saw the elven woman returning, he sheathed his blade and repocketed the stone before striding over to her. His face betrayed nothing, but he moved with a fierce purpose which betrayed hidden anger.

He stopped right in front of her, his eyes flickering over her changed clothing and tatooed arm for only an instant. He folded his arms, frowning.

"Why didn't yew wake my for my watch last night?" He demanded.

On return to the camp, she was greeted with Terrance's angry demand as to why she didn't wake him for his watch. It was not the question Eddellyn expected to hear nor was it a question she felt the need to answer. She lifted a dark brow archly at the fighter before she continued calmly to the center of the clearing. Acting as his simmering rage meant nothing to her, she dropped her cloak and pack before turning around to face him.

Eddellyn folded her arms across her chest, mimicking Terrance's stance. "I'm sorry but I don't recall promising that I would wake yew." The elf spoke quietly and there was a chill to her voice. She pressed her lips together a moment before adding, "If yew did not wake, 'tis no reason to get mad at me. For myself, I was capable of doing the watch all night on my own."

Except that yew feel asleep for part of that watch, a voice in the back of Eddellyn's head reminded her; a voice that she ruthlessly squashed. No one needed to know that. Dropping her arms, she looked toward Lanno and Orein and her stance relaxed. "'Tis best that we break our fast and be on our way again. If it will suit yew Terrance, yew may have the first watch tonight."

Terrance glowered for a moment, an angry retort on the edge of his tongue. Eddellyn was strong and smart and a capable leader, but by the gods she had a haughty attitude when confronted.

Terrance no doubt would have given full vent to his anger, had the nightmare of last night not still been present in his mind. The mental image of Eddellyn, sliding to the forest floor in a pool of her own blood, refused to leave his head. He shook his head to clear it, and set his belongings down.

"Yew seem well-rested for someone who stood watch the whole night." He spoke quietly, but without any chill in his tone.

As for the night watch to come, Terrance elected to remain silent.

At the added remark from Terrance, Eddellyn found herself making a low noise, close to a growl in the back of her throat. Her right hand flexed into a fist and she tamped down a biting response. The fighter couldn't know she had fallen asleep on her watch. He also couldn't know that just before she fell asleep she had made a decision to leave everyone behind and to head out to Terajin on her own. But when she woke, she had stayed.

She took a slow inhale and turned away from the fighter, ignoring his remark. Eying the remains of their small camp fire, Eddellyn crossed to the blackened pit and with the toe of her boot she kicked dirt over the dead embers, masking the site. That done, she made her way to the horses and moved toward Yah-Jin, the large horse prancing restlessly as she approached. When the elf reached out a hand, the horse turned his head and made like he was going to bite the limb but Edde snatched it back quickly. She softly rebuked the horse and reached out again, murmuring her apologies for leaving the animal standing all night.

Stretching on tiptoe, she scratched Yah-Jin behind the ear as she called over her shoulder to the others. "Sasha was resting at the stream but once she is back we should make plans to be on our way. Orien, Lanno, I have extra fruit and bread if yew need more food."

Something came up from the front. Several horses, running fast as all get-out. The old farmer pulled his nag off the road to make room with loud clicking and a "WAAAAH, NELLY!"

The riders passed them without a sideways glance. Two, in the official robes of the Terajin Wizards Guild, fast galloping nice-looking riding horses, each with a fresh spare on a lead. They were in a hurry somewhere!

Unfortunately what they left behind them was a long tail of dust that would take a while to settle.

The Hafling had watched the exchange with great interest, and at one point had to clamp his jaw shut. He gave Orein a quick grin when he thought Terrance and Edde weren't looking, and then turned his gaze to a dead oak leaf lying on the ground when the Elf turned to them. "Oh, yeah - extra food sounds good," he said happily to Edde, when offered.

"Should be a nice day for traveling, eh?" he asked, looking up at Edde.

She tightened the cinches of Yah-Jin's saddle before she dug into the satchel she had already secured to the back of the horse. Taking out a small oilskin packet containing some hardtack, she tucked it into the crook of her elbow to hold it while she returned to her search through the bag. The bandit withdrew two pieces of palm-sized fruit, the thick yellow skin making them look like brilliant jewels in the morning sunlight. Flicking the flap closed on the satchel, Eddellyn turned to Lanno and handed over the food to the Hafling.

Her expression was no longer the tight mask it was when she had spoken to the fighter, but it was neither relaxed and open. Carefully affecting a neutral expression, she spoke in low tones to Lanno as she responded. "Aye, we should be able to travel rather comfortably today."

Eddellyn held her position but she shifted her gaze upward to the clear sky, as if to gauge the weather. But in truth she wanted a moment to weigh her thoughts. As an afterthought she said, "We should be able to move a fair distance along the Lorimar but we'll be sleeping beneath the eaves of the Dark Forest tonight."

Llwe wiped her eyes, which had teared up in the dust. It would be a moment before she dared open her mouth to speak.

The farmer, while equally overwhelmed, was not nearly so silent, spitting dust from his mouth in between curses. "Stinkin' sons o' wizzerds," he spat, spinning in his seat to shake a fist at the disappearing backs of the riders.

"What the heck was that?" Llwe asked Adam eventually, hoping her friend hadn't suffered much more than she had from the dust.

In the meantime, the farmer had discovered that in his hurry to leave the roadway, he'd gotten one of his wagon's wheels stuck in a deep, albeit dry, roadside rut. He flicked at the horse, but the rut was on a diagonal to the direction the horse would need to be driven, and it was pretty clear the wheel was going to have to be lifted, rather than pulled free. Good thing he had a couple of youngsters riding along -- he'd never be able to pop that wheel out of the rut by himself. "Hop down, boys," the old man said, with no explanation as to why. Surely it was obvious to the boys that they were stuck. "Let's get this load o' hay offa here."

Orein had remained quiet and to his own thoughts for a good portion of the journey now. He often consulted the unique book he had discovered during the first time we woke, but the "person" in the book was never really cooperative with him... or had a way of avoiding any real answers to his questions. On other times he would stare and the compass he was given, but the needle would just continually spin, because Orein did not know in his own mind where exactly he should go. All he could do for now was put his trust in the companions that had stayed by him, Eddellyn, Lanno, and Terrance.

On this night he continued to remain silent, but finally braved a few words when Eddellyn spoke with Lanno offering a small response to her comement.

"...I wonder when we will sleep in real beds again." he too stared up at the sky, a tired expression on his face, but if anything, despite appearances, he was beginning to get stronger as the days went on. His injuries were now only small marks here and there on his body. His muscles were less achy, only sore from the long rides and lack of stretching, but he had quite a bit more color to him now, a very boyish face, and it seemed as if his body was finally where it should be.

He was different now from the constantly morphing enigma, but he was Orein all the same, his features were settled, and no longer had the effect of seeming to change by moment when yew were not paying attention. How he would grow now was anyone's guess, there was no more magickal influences, just his own natural blood flowing through him, and with that a new distinct flow of energy being to ignite at his core, waiting to be molded into whatever gifts he had yet to discover with in himself.

He again became quiet, gladly eating the fruit that Eddellyn had offered, as his gaze seemed to rest on her now. He wondered what would happen when they all finally reached their destination. Would they always be together? He felt a small twinge of sadness within.

Seeing that both boys were ready, the farmer hollered, "One . . . two . . . three!" Everybody pulled or pushed, and the wagon came free. The horse, no longer forced still, began pulling, too, causing the farmer to grab at his reins. "Whoa, boy!"

His friend seemed a little down, but maybe he was just a little tired. Riding horses was a lot more difficult than he'd thought it might be.

He walked over to Breeze, and patted his mount on the flank. "How're yew doing today, boy?" Breeze returned his query with a brief snort. After they, together, put the hay bales back onto the cart, they were set to continue.

"Hey, old man... yew said yew had ways to go... how far is that? Where we gonna spend the night? Out in the field? Or nice warm farm house?"

They'd ridden in the back of the wagon an hour or more, and Llwe had managed to doze off a little. A turn woke her, and she saw they were off the road, now, and headed up a drive. The house wasn't much to look at, the barn less so.

"Yew boys can earn a bed and somethin' to eat by helpin'," the farmer said, pulling up to the barn.

"Helping?" Llwe asked. "Helping with what?"

The farmer looked at the youth as if he'd just laid an egg. "Everythin', ya little dip. Here, now, throw yer stuff in the barn, ya can sleep there later, and give me a hand unhitchin'. One of ya can brush down Nelly. T'other can help me unload this hay."

While she helped the 'old man' unload cart, Amanda kept an eye of Lew... did he really know how to 'brush down Nelly'? Amanda didn't...

For her part, slinging hay bales wasn't all that hard. Amanda was good at 'moving bulk' in an efficient manner from her excellent martial arts skills. So even though of a light build, she could hold her own against the hay.

All such things come to an end. And so, one way or the other, the chores got done by the end of the day. Llwe learned a thing or two about hitching and unhitching. Amanda broke a sweat moving weight around. Imp, unseen and unheard, checked out the farm, but refrained from taking what wasn't his. For now.

The great reward for a few hours of labor was the evening meal with the farmer's family. Although it wasn't meager, it was quite simple. Plain, even. Old bread, fresh gruel, radishes from the garden. Cool, clear water from the farmer's well rounded out the offerings.

Amanda was in a quiet, pensive mood. The monastic quality of the meal reminded her of... something. Something she could not quite remember...

After their meal -- and even though she didn't much like radishes, Llwe was glad for the meal, for the work had made her hungry -- the travelers were sent to the barn where they'd be able to make their bed amongst hay and horse poo. It could be worse, Llwe supposed. They'd just need to be careful not to get into any of it. The smell, she'd already gotten used to.

Llwe was glad for Adam's company, as well, even if her new friend seemed to have gone off somewhere in his own imagination. "Yew must be missing yer wolf," she commented at one point, realizing she hadn't seen the animal for hours and assuming it must have run off. That would certainly explain Adam's mood.

Her horse. Sasha looked down at her beautiful beast, suddenly regretting that she had never named him. "What should I call yew?" she mused aloud. He had been as faithful as a war horse. What kind of name would express his traits? Sasha glanced over at Terrance, who seemed lost in his thoughts. Perhaps she shouldn't disturb him to ask such a question, but she felt such light banter would help the time pass.

"My horse requires a name, Sir Terrance," she called. "How are yew at choosing names?"

Her own light attitude nearly made her blink. How much she had changed since the Seven Oaks Inn! Talking about unimportant things, trusting people she got close to, rarely thinking about her betrothed or her family, and even trying to settle down in one place permenantely. Sasha pushed the thoughts aside. Everyone changed.

Zaiya looked northward and westward along the curve of the road, feeling cold and anxious. What manner of place was this with its freezing wind and the smell of salt in the air and its strange grass and high trees? Aiee, who would have thought that trees could grow so high or so close together? She had heard whispers of these things in the barracks, but should she allow the words of slaves to breathe? She thought she should not.

Still, it seemed to be true. In the darkness, she had fumbled and stumbled through the thick undergrowth of the alien landscape until she had emerged, briar-cut and soaked through from a misting trickle of rain into rocky windswept hills that over looked the long snake of the road. Roads meant people. People meant danger, but also food and fire. From her perch on a rocky overhang among the hills, she had watched people come and go along the road. Whoever they were, they were not her people. What did this mean? If she went down to the walls and the city in the far distance to the west, would they recognize her as a runaway slave and hang her from the post to die slowly and go to the vultures?

Am I free, god?, she asked, silently, touching the black scorpions tattooed onto her shoulders for luck, If you will me go into the place of those who dwell here, give me a sign.

She waited, and watched, but just when she began to feel the first pounding throb of fear in her heart, the first inkling that perhaps she was lost here even to the god, she looked down and her eyes widened in wonder. A scorpion had emerged from under the overhand of a rock nearby and was making slow progress across the surface of the stone. It was smaller than the great black and mottled yellow scoprions of the desert, but it was no less a sign. Even here, she was not beyond the sight of the god. Even here, she was its slave, if no longer anyone elses.

Quickly, she drew one of her knives across her thigh in small, shallow cut to bleed for her lack of faith.

I will not doubt you again, she promised, chastened, and stood. It would take a few hours perhaps to reach the city and its strangeness. If they fell upon her, she would fight. If they did not, she would wait. She was Zaiya the Scorpion. She danced in the god's great eye, and it would guide her path.
