Worlde Arcane: Aniada: Dark Forest: The Lorimar Road 15: Seabreeze Road

Each section of the Lorimar Road spans a approximately a full days' ride, or roughly two days' march afoot.
Despite the proximity of the Dark Forest, whence dark-intentioned denizens sometimes emerge for violence against travelers, the Seabreeze Road is a favorite of seasoned Lorimar travelers, for the fresh wind from the Vericul brings clear skies for joyous sunlight year-round, and many the adventurer is known to burst into song as he puts one foot in front of the other to traverse this wide path. Southward across easy grasslands lies the Ocean itself, and pleasant beaches, whose gulls often soar as far as this bit of the Great Lorimar, calling down their melancholy songs to the travellers below.
•Northeastward travel leads to The Festing Lanes, farther on up the highway 'tis five days' ride to Terajin
•Southwestward travel leads to The Seven Oaks Mile and two days' ride on to Seven Oaks

Aqua remained silent as she looked to the new commer who had joined their small flock. Licking her lips, her hands went behind her back and she looked to the ground. A slight shake of the head occured, refuring to the new form "Not that I know of"

Another shrug came as Aqua then turned a little and began to slowly yet gracefully walk forwards. Praying she wouldnt slip up like she had been doing ever since she reached the land.

Aris looked to the Sea Elf, surprised to see one on land and not in the sea.

She was beautiful, to say the least. Her hair was a mint green colour, and her skin was of a creamy white. Her facial features were cute; her nose was small- but not too small-, her eyes were blue, almost icy-blue in hue. She was short, but unlike most of the Sea Elves who he had met in the past had both been in the sea, and wore nothing around their head. This young woman wore a crown-like bandanna around her forehead.

He gazed at her for a few moments before answering her.

"Alright," he said quietly, walking up to her and offering a hand to her, to both help support her, and to introduce himself to her.

"I'm Aris Fyrell," he said. "What about yew?"

(OOC:

In general it is usual to wait until the majority of the group have had chance to respond to an action before posting again yerself. Obviously common sense is required when actually following this through on the boards. If a couple of people have responded to yer question or action then yew would not necessarily have to wait for everyone before posting again yerself, providing yew don't rush along with a few more regular posters posting so often that one person gets left behind. Leave reasonable times for people to respond and wait until key characters who might want to respond have had chance to do so.

As an extreme example of this, if yew should suddenly decide to have Aris attack Sorin, then Jeid posts that he attempts to stop yew it would be polite to wait until Sorin has chance to respond as well before yew post responding to Jeid's intervention. Otherwise Sorin, a key player to the scene would get left behind and end up not having a chance to respond toi an attack on himself! On the other hand if everyone else is asleep and yew are having a conversation with just one character then there isn't so much of a requirement to wait for others to post. As I said, it's just a case of common sense and getting used to how things work.

In response to yer other question about quoting things related to yew, there is no need to do this. Actually it's slightly annoying when people start quoting chunks of other people's posts in their own. Simply make a reference back to it. E.g. "At Aqua's question Aris smiled and replied.... etc." Anyone reading the thread will have only just read the post yew are responding to and so will not need to be reminded of what the question or action was through a quote.

Hope that's cleared a few things up, feel free to contact me if yew have anymore quetsions, or ask further questions in the ooc thread here. Thanks!

By Sorin Harker, Wandering Soul (Sorin)

Monday, October 13, 2008 - 5:33 pm GMT Edit | Link |

Sorin was slightly put off by the sudden amount of passerbys that seemed to think they could simply tag along for the sake of company. While Sorin fully understood the Umanoid's need for social interaction, the presence of three others all at once was a bit much for him, and he found himself quickening his pace, only sparing the new elf a quiet, observant glance. Though he was trying to learn a bit more about these creatures, and perhaps even immerse himself in their customs, by no means would he let any of them, even the interesting bard, become an impediment in his task.

He overheard the new elf introduce himself as Aris, and he all too obviously had a profound interest in the female sea elf that had only just begun to walk alongside them. Perhaps he was trying to court her? His posture was very much like that of an endearing male, and the unexpected gesture of the hand offered was something he had seen many times when males were attempting to garner a potential mate.

Perhaps this Aris and Aqua would be able to wander off on their own. Sorin had no reason to trust either of them, nor Jeid for that matter, though the latter had turned out to be far more personable than expected. But speak of the blind leading the blind! None of them provided any potential assistance regarding the layout of the surrounding geography, and that is what Sorin needed most.

"Aris...elf. There are many elves here? You are all elves, though all different elves." Sorin hesitated, throwing a glance towards the night sky. "I...am to go south. South, I must keep going south. If you follow, you must not provide...complication."

And that was that. The vampire obviously did not like to speak much, and indeed, stringing together more than two sentences took a great effort on his part. Falling silent again, Sorin continued on ahead, his gaze wandering the road. It would not be land for long, he sensed. No, there would be a vast body of water, something that would attempt to hamper his journey. He could smell it, taste it on the faint currents of air.

Aris nodded, looking Sorin straight in the eye.

“If yew would allow me to accompany yew in yer journey, I would be gratified.”

He paused, looking from Sorin to the other elves that were part of the group. He realized now that man was right; there were several other Elves accompanying him. This didn’t faze Aris, though. He had, of course, travelled with his own kind before, after all.

“I would not become a hassle for yew, Sorin,” Aris said simply. “I would merely follow yew, and do as yew instructed. I only wish to explore, and I thought that it would be better to explore with a group, instead of by myself.”

By Jeid Liano II (Jeid)

Monday, October 13, 2008 - 9:48 pm GMT Edit | Link |

Jeid had suddenly gone very quiet, staring up at the clouds though his ever changing pace remained the same, never breaking as he continuously sped up and slowed down, simply to have something to do. Suddenly though, he re-entered the conversation by turning so that he now walked backwards, slightly ahead of the others so that he could see them all. Parting the hair that had again fallen into his face, he began to speak. "Elves, Elves, everywhere!" He said, holding his hands outward as though he were going to beckon even more of his kind from the landscape. "Sea Elves and Wood Elves, and, well, mostly-but-not-quite-entirely Wood Elves. Come now Sorin, complications are what make life worth living for! If they didn't exist, what would make life fun? What would I be able to sing and dance and tell stories about, if everyone had such an easy time?"

With yet more people to listen to him, Jeid again felt the urge to play, and decided he would. However, he withdrew only his instrument, holding it horizontally to his chest, he began to pluck out a tune that was hard to describe, not exactly sad, simply slow. He was making his smaller illusions, ones that everyone could see. Unfortunately for the party, Jeid was a prankster at heart. As his fingers continued to play the song, the dirt underneath the other three's feat appeared to move and shift, though of course they would not feel it.

Aqua looked at the new male in an akward tone. As he looked at her in a strange manner. She shifted back a little, to try and ignore and pretend like she never witnessed his stare. Only to almost have her fall and to be caught by the male.

An irritated scowl acrossed her creamy white face and she pushed him back "I do not need yer help" Was what she replied as and began to walk forwards, away from the male and its surroundings.

Huffing a little she looked to the ground and made sure her walking was steady. Here she came for adventure and ended up finding a male to fondle over her looks. Lovely. Looking up to see the other male, Jeid whom she found out the name of. He began to play around. A half smile couted her lips and she shook her head.

Having bits of her mint green hair fall into her face. Her eyes soon driffted to Sorin for a moment, he didnt seem like an elf and hearing his words she new he wasnt. But what was he? Looking away, she continued to move forwards. Although, when she looked down it was like the ground was moving from under her.

Her eyes went wide and she moved away from the moving ground. She did not feel anything but she remained away from it. Not trusting it at all.

Aris pulled his hand back from her as she fell onto him, shrinking back a bit at her hasty remark.

He looked towards the Sea Elf, her expression already showing her dissaprovement of him. He had merely glanced her way for a few moments, for it had been a long time since he had ever seen a Sea Elf. He looked away from her, embarrassed by his own foolishness.

"I'm sorry," he said, but not knowing what else to say. He remained silent, as he waited for a response from Sorin about the question he has asked him earlier.

"I will welcome complication, but not unnecessary complication in the form of companions. I have a task, and I must achieve it as quickly as possible," Sorin replied rather shortly towards Jeid, showing, for the first time, impatience towards the bard. The flare up was gone as quickly as it had come, however; he was only slightly put off by these newcomers, who had all seemed to take for granted that Sorin was some sort of leader who would take them all on some epic journey or whatnot.

No, he only wanted to find what had been lost to him.

Perhaps it would be best to explain this, but he was not sure whether the other three were trustworthy. Maybe a bit more of evaluation would deem this true or not. After all, the vampire had nothing to lose.

He watched with a bland expression the sea elf's behavior; of course he couldn't understand her skittishness around the ground, other than perhaps that she was not used to walking. As before, Sorin was completely unaware that Jeid's playing was inducing illusions.

Turning now to the newest elf, Sorin restated what he'd said, speaking now to not just Aris, but everyone in general. "Accompany me if you all wish, but know now I have nothing to give any of you. I have my own schedule to keep, and my own strange habits to take care of. I care not how long you wish to follow, whether it be five minutes or five years, but do not expect me to wait for you if you fall behind, as I would not expect the same from you."

Certain that that was enough to explain the extent of his tolerances, Sorin sighed softly and closed his eyes briefly before continuing his pace. "I apologize if that was somewhat blunt, but it is the truth. I must recover something very important to me, and cannot afford to waste time."

By Jeid Liano II (Jeid)

Tuesday, October 14, 2008 - 1:37 am GMT Edit | Link |

Jeid continued to play, though he did look at Sorin and give him a somewhat quizzical look. Even with his own odd way of thinking, Jeid felt a bit put out by the vampire, mainly because of the bluntness then anything else. Still, it didn't affect him for long, and soon he was humming to himself as he played, still walking backward on the road. The music began to pick up pace, and before long Jeid had again turned about and drawn the bow to continue his playing, his hand practically becoming a blur as the notes turned from short staccato to racing, his bow moving so fast one might expect it to either burst into flame or fly away.

The ground under the other's feet continued to shift and change, now roiling and twisting in ways that were definitely not natural. Occasionally little bumps would appear in the dirt, moving upwards and crumbling to reveal small holes just under the dry dirt, about the size of fingers or perhaps a little larger. Each time one such hole appeared, if one looked closely they would be able to see what appeared to be a form retreating back down the hole, deep underground.

A cart rumbled up the road behind the group, and even louder than the rickety wheels, were the shouts coming from it. Men's and Women's voices were raised, and at first, it would seem like they might be shouts of merriment, or drunken revelry. But as it approached, it was clear that they were actually shouts of an argument, and a rather violent one at that. The sounds of scuffling could be heard, even from a distance.

As the cart approached the group, and the shrill voice of a woman carried through the night, the fighting seemed to increase, and the voice was cut short, and would have been drowned out by the loud creaking of the cart anyway. The vehicle passed them, flying by under the power of two horses who were obviously exhausted.

A short way down the road, the rickety cart lurched, and suddenly, a figure was flung over the side. The figure seemed to hover in the air for just a moment, before falling to the hard packed road with a painful sounding thud, as the cart continued to drive.

If the group would approach, they would find a young woman lying spread-eagle on the ground. Blood covered her face from several cuts, and dark bruises were already forming beneath it. Her eyes were half open, but it would not be clear whether she was conscious or not, since she did not move.

Aris looked towards the figure that fell out of the cart, watching the cart itself as it drove off, leaving its passenger behind. He shook his head, irritated with the thought that it was probably just a childish prank played on the group to steer them away from what they were doing.

He walked away from the group for just a moment to see who it was who was laying on the ground. As he approached the figure, he started to jog to it, seeing the wounds that were all over the young woman's body.

He stopped beside the body, dropping himself to his knees to see if the woman was alright.

"Miss... miss, are yew alright?"

He leaned forward, with his sharp, pointed ear hovering over her mouth, trying to determine whether or not she was breathing.

Sorin was unaware of what images Jeid was conjuring up, and could only wonder why his playing had become so feverish. The vampire half expected something to happen, some creature to pop out of nowhere...mm, luckily none did.

Glancing towards the overeager Aris, Sorin only raised a brow. "My heart, dear."

And then a commotion. Such things rarely held Sorin's attention for more than a few moments, but he could smell blood...almost feel the pain, taste it in the air. Wincing visibly, he squinted his eyes shut a moment and then followed Aris to the form of the woman. His programmed instincts immediately came in, and, removing his gloves, he set deathly pale hands on the sides of her face, eyes closed in an expression of weary concentration.

Slowly, the discolorations from the bruises began to disappear, followed by the wounds, which started to seal themselves up. Sorin's features contorted slightly in pain, but whatever pain it was he did not communicate anymore than that.

Caylwin lay still on the ground, floating in a haze of pain and nausea as she struggled to breathe, the wind having been roughly knocked out of her. She could hear the men approaching, but made no move to acknowledge them, even as the one bent over her. She wanted to tell them to stop talking. . . her head hurt, and she was sure she was about to be sick.

Pressing her eyes shut against the pain and the noise, she did not see the pale man approach her, and only knew he was there by the touch of his icy hands on her face. She felt a shudder go through her, and for a moment, she was completely disoriented, and thought for a moment that she had finally gone blissfully unconscious. It took her some time to realize that. . . it didn't hurt anymore. She hadn't blacked out...the pain that had coursed through her was fading, gone.

Opening her eyes slowly, she stared up at the face above hers, blearily trying to focus on him.

"What..." she stopped, her tongue seeming to stick to the roof of her mouth. She could taste blood, and it took her a moment to get her voice to properly work. "Who...are yew?" It was not the only thing she wanted to know, but it was all her muddled thoughts could come up with and wrap her mouth around.

She raised a hand to her face, and expected a fresh burst of pain, but there was none, and, avoiding the hands of the pale man, she touched her cheek, and her expression showed obvious confusion. Her fingers came away bloody, but she could feel no wounds beneath the blood. . . and the bruises, the receiving of which she vividly remembered, were gone.

Aris looked at Sorin, before looking back down at the woman.

"I'm Aris Fyrell," he began, offering to help the woman sit up. "Yew were thrown out of a cart that just went by."

He looked back at the rest of the group before continuing.

"What is yer name?" he asked.

Sorin had not budged from his position kneeling next to the woman even as Aris was offering to help her sit up. Nor did he say anything in response to his introduction, as the vampire was quite sure the woman had been addressing himself. He wanted to tell the elf to hush, but he felt it a waste of effort. She had just recovered; obviously she would need a moment to reorient herself with her surroundings before answering questions. The audacity!

The vampire turned his weary gaze back to the woman, finally pulling his hands away she she spoke. He pulled his gloves back onto his hands, flexing his fingers slightly before folding them in his lap. Still remaining kneeling next to the woman, Sorin saw fit to answer her question. Well, it was a simple one really. How else could he answer it?

"Sorin," he replied plainly, pointing to himself as if this might somehow help communicate the message across to her. "You were wounded, but no longer." Extracting a cloth from beneath his coat, Sorin began to dab off a bit of blood that had caused a stain around the woman's mouth.

He was finding it odd, now. Did Umanoid creatures really spend so much time walking around during night? Sorin thought they usually only did that during the day; he had never expected to meet so many at this hour, and in so short a period of time. It seemed he still had much to learn.

Jeid's playing had stopped abruptly as the sound of the cart could be heard, lifting the bow from the strings mid-note, and sheathing both just as the sound of it turned from simple noise to what appeared to be an argument. His bright eyes widened slightly as it drew closer together, giving the bard a child-like look on his face. When it had raced past, Jeid decided that he would attempt to catch up with it, but after only a few seconds he found that even with his speed, there was no catching the thing.

Giving up on chasing the cart, he sped over to the wagon at about the same time as Aris, sitting cross-legged on the other side of the woman and bending over to get a closer look. Oddly, he said nothing.

When the woman opened her eyes and Sorin performed his odd ritual, Jeid continued to look into both of their faces in turn. Still, he had a feeling that now simply wasn't the time to say anything, so nothing said he.

Caylwin brought a hand up to rub at her eyes, once Soren had removed his hands from her face.

"So I see," she said quietly, her eyes narrowing as she studied him. There was something strange about him, and she felt intrigued, and slightly nervous.

As he bent over her with the cloth, she suddenly realized that he, and his other two companions, had rather crowded around her, and, suddenly uncomfortable, she drew her head away from his touch, and edged away from he and Aris, and the other man who had joined them, but who's name she didn't know.

Pushing herself into a sitting position without taking help from Aris, she used the back of one hand to wipe blood from her face, and turned to spit a mouthful onto the dirt. "Thanks for yer help...I'm fine, I think." Here she gave the pale Soren another searching look. She knew, after the events of the evening, that she should at least be sore, but there was still nothing. So it couldn't even be that they'd used herbs. . . She considered asking him outright, but looking around at her company and her surroundings, she thought the question might be better served for a later date, if there was one. Besides, she didn't know anything about these people. Considering the way her day had gone so far, they'd likely be worse than the louts she'd been sharing the cart with.

"I think...I should get going," she said after a moment, slowly working on getting to her feet, though this made her head spin.

Aris didn't feel right, just letting this woman go off without making sure that she was alright. He knew that Sorin didn't want to get involved with anything else, except getting what he wanted on their journey, but wondered if this woman needed any help getting anywhere. He drew back a bit from her, as to show her that he didn't want to make her feel uncomfortable or uneasy with him, or with Sorin.

"Do yew need help getting to where yew need to go?" he asked gently, noticing how uncomfortable she was with trying to get to her feet.

By Sorin Harker, Wandering Soul (Sorin)

Friday, October 24, 2008 - 12:58 am GMT Edit | Link |

Sorin spared a glance towards Jeid as if to ask the knowledgeable bard if he knew why there were so many strange people wandering around at night. Honestly! Umanoids were supposed to stay safe indoors, not wander around in the dark walking, or singing, or hiding in bushes, or getting tossed out of carts. Preposterous.

Pursing his colorless lips, the vampire pulled the cloth away as the woman moved to sit up. Tucking it back under his coat, he folded his hands in his lap again, watching her speak her thanks. He nodded in silent reply, not knowing how to answer really; though they could not see it, given his layers of clothing, he was now working on repairing his own wounds that he had absorbed from the woman.

He did not move for a few moments, not wishing to jar the rapidly healing injuries on his person, but when the woman finally stood, Sorin did as well, not seeming bothered by the fact that the others, save Jeid, were all far taller than him.

When Aris posed his question, Sorin's curious gaze lingered on him for a few moments before turning back to the woman as if to reinforce the question. He did not linger long on it, however, and instead turned from the others and continued on his way, his pace just as steady as before, as if nothing had happened at all. If the others didn't do any decision making soon, or if they chose not to keep up, he would soon leave them behind.

Caylwin watched as Sorin started off again, one brow raising.

"Impatient fellow, isn't he," she murmured, glancing at the remaining group. They seemed like a harmless enough bunch, though she couldn't tell much about the one who had not yet spoken. But Sorin intrigued her, and she still needed to find out what he had done.

"I don't know where I'm going," she admitted, turning to Aris. "But I do think I'll accept the offer, and come along for a time...as long as no one objects. After all, I do have a bit of a debt to pay, I think." Tossing her hair back over her shoulder, and feeling relieved to finally feel in control of her mind at least, even if she still felt a bit unsteady, she gave them a winning smile, and started off after the steadily retreating figure.

Aris nodded, glad that she would be coming along. He knew that he would feel bad, even if she chose to go off on her own. Her wounds probably still pained her, and Aris knew that it probably hurt her to walk.

"I'm not sure where I'm going either," he said to her, hurrying to catch up to her. "To be honest... I want to explore the worlde."

He looked back over at the woman.

"What is yer name?" he asked her.

Jeid had remained silent the entire time, an odd occurrence for one like him. But he himself was odd, which made such a point as "behaving irregularly" moot. He lived for spontaneity, and if he didn't have some every once in a while, why, he would simply go crazy! (Of course, some would obviously debate whether this shows an obvious lack of spontaneity somewhere in Jeid's past)

He called out to Sorin as he walked away, instantly springing upright and racing after the fellow, covering the ground quite quickly, his legs propelling him faster then they it looked like they should have. Once he had come abreast with the vampire again, he started his normal, ever-changing pace. "A question, my friend." He said after a moment, looking back behind his shoulder to see if any others had followed, irritably moving his cape and hair aside to attain such information. "When will we sleep?"

Sorin walked on ahead of the still chattering group, not seeming to be particularly impatient of their deliberation; he simply saw no point in lingering about when they obviously could carry conversation while they walked. He kept quiet as always, folding his hands in front of him neutrally as his gaze followed the progres of the moon in the sky; soon it would be daytime, and he would have to rest. But with this small group that was forming, he was beginning to doubt that a nocturnal method of travel would be conventional for them.

Oh, but they were a group. A group! A small family of sorts. If they were tight knit enough, Sorin could...

Jeid sprung up out of nowhere, and the vampire shook his thoughts away, smiling gently towards the bard as he resumed his odd way of walking. Considering the elf's questions, Sorin murmured quietly, "I...do not know. When do you want to sleep? If we must, we may travel during day and sleep at night. But I like it the other way." He knew that wasn't the norm for most Umanoids, though, and he hadn't thought to consider such complications.

"Maybe when we reach the next city, we will discuss it? I...had no plans for having many people come. But maybe you will all be a valuable asset to...this journey." Sighing wistfully, Sorin's saddened gaze drifted south again as they walked on.

Watching the other two getting farther ahead, she picked up her pace to be able to catch up.

Most of her treck was uneventful, Shadow preferred it that way. She had moved steadily, travel easy with the weather and such. Looking to the west the half elf could see that she would need to be finding a place to bed down for the night. Spying a small grouping of tress she headed off the road. The large old trees towered over her, their dense greenery making a perfect canopy if the night should bring on a small shower. The U shaped grouping would provide a great barrier to the side and behind her, leaving only one direction, really, that she would need to watch over.

Settling her pack agains one of the tree the half elf began to ready her bed roll and an evening meal. Over head in the deep greenery the raven sat and watched.

The eyes of the forest were upon the stranger, watching her every move. The only way to the woman would be directly on, trapping her inside what she believed to be a safe haven. The ground coverage moved slightly, as if a soft breeze had just pasted, then all was still once more.

She stopped in mid motion, her Elvin senses perked. For a moment she stood still as stone, waiting. As the surrounding aura settled Shadow finished her preparations. Sitting she began to eat her evening meal eyes scanning for any unusual movement. As she ate she noticed that her food supply was dwindling quickly. She could, if necessary, take down some small game and forage for roots and such, but hoped it would not come to that sort of desperation. The season was to early for barriers and nuts so wild forage would be scarce as well.

Finishing her meal ForestShadow scouted the general area. Several yards out and to the right of her sight the grass was tampered down. Stooping she examined the spot. Thank full for her Elvin grandfathers teachings she was able to recognized that who or what had been there was not a large being, possibly 100 to 120 pounds in weight and had moved in from one direction and out the other. Fallowing the retreat area Shadow looked for any unusual movement.

The dusk was turning to dark and sure that what ever was there was gone, for now, the half elf made her way back to camp knowing there would be no restful sleep tonight.

The woman had been still for some time as had the being that was watching her, until now. It moved stealthily stopping every few steps to see if its movement s had stirred the one sleeping under the trees. It had made its way to just few feet in front of the grouping and waited, the long blade becoming hot on the hilt with the pressure of its grip.

The being was just a quick as it was silent, leaping into the air its body poised to land over the sleeping woman.

The impact caused her to loose her wind for a moment. The woods were dark, the heavy greenery blocking out any part of moon light, and all Shadow could se were two red orbs staring into her eyes only inches away. The hot breath from the being stank of rotted meat and blood, causing the woman’s stomach to turn. Knowing if she did not get the upper hand on this situation she may be this things next meal. With a warriors cry the half elf bucked hard sending her attacker flying over her head. A satisfying “humph” was released as it hit one of the large trees of ForestShadows encampment and slid to the ground. By the time the dark creature was to its feet Shadow had her sword poised and ready.

Seemingly trapped the attacker let outs it own battle cry, one that was piercing enough to shatter the silent wooded night. As she moved forward to end the life of the creature it leaped into the air twisting its body in mid motion. Before she knew it the beast had clung to the tree that it had been thrown into and climbed up into the green canopy. Shadow could hear the leaves rustle and the branches creak under its weight as it made its way away from her in the tree tops, and then all was silent once more.

She did not sleep the rest of the night. She had paced the confines of the tree shelter, eyes and ears alert to every sound and movement. The creature did not return, but she felt it was not too far away.

As dawn broke Shadow gathered her belongings and set out on the road, she did not even take the time for a morning meal. The air had the sent of rain on its breath and the half elf needed to travel as far as she could before the weather made her stop to seek shelter once again.

Her instincts had proven her right. By mid day ForestShadow was drenched and trudging through sopping mud. She did not want to waste the day tucked under a tree so she moved on hoping to make it to the edge of the Festing Lanes where she would camp and rest well before taking the road forward to the desolate swamp road. On this road she would travel until the end, if possible, she had no desire to camp in the bug infested area, and thinking the creature that had attacked her the night before just may quite at home in swamp surroundings, so onward she pushed, miserable.

She did not make it to the boarder. It seemed to the half elf that the trek to Terajin was not as easy as she had remembered, then again she had been on horse back the last time she traveled this way. The rain still fell though not as heavily but that was no consequence being there was no adequate shelter to get out of the rain that did fall. She settled for a small over hang of rock just off the road. The cubby was just large enough, if she tucked her knees to her chin, to cover her. Atop the ridge was a tree of admirable size which helped a bit and made a good enough shelter for the raven. There was no room for a fire even a small one so ForestShadow sat shivering hoping she would get a least a few hours of sleep.

The morning brought warm sun and bright light. The half elf emerged tired, stiff and very hungry, from her small cubby under the rock. Grateful for the warmth upon her face Shadow stretched, with not so few then 5 or 6 cringes and creeks as her bones and muscles tried to maneuver back in place.

Luckily her pack stayed dry with what few previsions she had left. Settling in the sun Shadow unwrapped the some of the dried fruit and cheese. Eating sparingly she finished and washed the bit down with water from her skin. Standing, brushing the damp dust from her britches, ForestShadow surveyed her surroundings and the path ahead. She could see and smell clearly at this border where the swamp began. Is a two day ride so she was to travel for at least 4 days if not a bit longer, she was not to keen on this track of her journey. The raven cawed loudly overhead as it leapt from a high branch to circle once over his mistresses head to glide down and land at her feet. Once settled the black bird shook him self heartily and began to squawk and peck at the ground. “Best yew be in search o’ yer own meals frum ere out. Me scrapins be getting a bit scarce.” Hunter gave an even louder squawk fallowed by an ear piercing caw. “all right ye bugger bird. Be glad I ave no left yew to be a feather duster ya ungrateful bird” Shadow pulled form her pocket several pieces of dried fruit and bread. “Hear ya scavenger, I would no be eatin this anyway.”

With a slight grin down at the bird ForestShadow hefted her pack and set off for the long road of the Feasting Lanes.

It was nearing midnight by the time the black warmare plodded her way onto the Seabreeze Road. Her unconscious cargo lay limp against her hide, and her resolute rider remained alert and erect, looking this way and that through the pelting rain that had begun an hour ago.

Each drop felt like a god spitting on her. Calamity bared her teeth, quietly dreaming of stomping her steel-clad hooves into that white-cloaked buffoon's cranium.

The healer had taken to humming a cheerful tune to himself as they rode through the miserable weather. His cloak and robes were soaked through, weighing down his arms and sticking his legs to Calamity's sides, yet he seemed unperturbed by the inclemency. Even the tree leeches that bristled from Darver's flesh went unnoticed as he peered around in the rain-soaked night. There had to be some place to stop...

Oh! There, to the right of the road. It was a sad-looking shack ringed with cobblestones, but perhaps it would offer some sort of shelter. He turned point at the house and to shout something to his companions, but whatever he had tried to say was lost to the rainfall. Little did he know that just a little further down the road, obscured by a turn in the forestation and the decreased visibility, was a full-fledged inn.

In midnight silhouette, Sasha looked like a specter, sitting on top of her broken down horse, blanket draped over head and shoulders to keep the rain off.

At first, the rain had been refreshing, a chance to wash away the accumulated sweat and grime of the hard ride through the Festing Lanes. Now, she was just wet and tired and miserable. Itchy little red bumps where she had been bitten by insects were beginning to raise up on her arms and ankles as well.

Her mount danced in a circle below her, tugging at the leads in Sasha's fist. Perhaps it was due to the crop of saddle sores that had begun to fester on Dinner's back, or the something nasty that still resided, undiscovered, in the saddle bag that lay against the nag's left hip. Maybe the horse was just wet and tired too.

"Yew thinking about stopping there?"She eyed the dank outline of the shack. Rain, it turned out, was a nightmare to see through, all those little moving droplets of water streaking through the air.

"Better than out in the storm. I guess." Sasha could sleep anywhere, so she was happy with whatever beds pleased her companions.

Just when Lofis thought things couldn't get worse. He was tired, he ached all over from the ride and now he was soaked to the bone. If there was ever a time when a fire and a mug of ale would go down well it was now.

His horse cantered over to Sasha and The Healer.
"Look can we stop talking and just get out of this sodding rain?!" He shouted over the patter of water. He was obviously quite angry at being out in this weather for so long.

Darver's march had tired him, and his face was throbbing.

He halted and said to Sasha and Lofis, "In my pocket, I had a fold of leather -- in the leather, I had animal-restorative gear, most recently used upon a certain robberess in a Terajin tavern. My pocket, now, is empty. I suppose the kit fell from my possession, when the UnderNeather leaped upon me, rolling me from my ill-fated golden fyrt." He cocked his head sideways. With the group a little more then two minutes from the old cabin the Healer pointed out to an Inn. Lofis was suddenly filled with frustration and anger at the Healer's joking. Ignoring Darver's words, his face scrunched up to try and contain his fury, and one index finger began to both point and shake vigorously at the Inn.
"Yew mean to tell me..." Lofis began, "That I could have been drinking in there last night..."

At that moment he could have punched the Healer, knowing full in the back of his mind that such an act would have probably got him killed.
"... Instead I was stuck in a grotty little shed, drenched and eating brown apples?!" He cried looking around for some kind of moral support.
"Right! That's it! Healer, yew owe me one night of ale! And trust me it's gonna cost yew a pretty penny the way I drink!"

Sasha brought up the rear in time to hear Lofis having another outburst over the inn they had discovered. She smiled, knowing that Lofis's boast about his drinking abilities was more than just talk. He'd drunk her broke back in Terajin.

She was surprised to see Darver walking, but happy to bring Dinner to a more manageable gait that matched his pace.

"Sorry," she shrugged. "I never got close enough to pick up any of yer gear." The lie was outright and obvious, since Darver's jeweled blade hung at her saddle. She hadn't had the chance to rifle the man's pockets though, that much was true.

"Healer was closer though. It sounds rather like something he might have recognized and picked up. Or perhaps one of those road people we found yew amongst has it.

"If I may ask, though, what exactly is an UnderNeather?"

Darver gave the woman a suspicious glance, but said nothing. He had not noticed the sword on her saddle -- in fact, it hurt to look anywhere, due to the great slash across his face.

Tiredly, he rubbed his temples with his thumbs, said to her only, "A thing from the UnderNeath," and then turned and headed for the tavern.

On his way, he pressed his palms together and mumbled under his breath. When his palms parted, a half-dozen gold coins shimmered in his left hand.

There was something off about the healer. The anxiety at the cabin had been symptomatic, as was his lighthearted laugh at Lofis' threat. "Oh, goodman Lofis, thine jests are the twinkling of stars in the sky. Mine hopes are that thou art not a thirsty man, for I have spent all my coin on Olt's ham." With an innocent grin, the white-cloaked man produced a solitary silver coin from the folds of his robes.

Calamity nickered irritably at the delay. "Oh, of course, my irascible friend," the healer openly declared to his steed, oblivious to the discourse between Darver and Sasha. He nudged the warmare onward distractedly, as if suddenly unaware of his companions.

Sasha shook her head for the umpteenth time to try and clear her nose of the sea scent she swore she could smell. The memories were swarming her, nearly driving her up the wall. She wanted so badly to swim that she didn't even care if she ran into any merpeople.

Any merpeople.

Someday she wanted to live by the sea, if not in it. Alone or with someone, it didn't matter. Perhaps she could even start up her own inn along the shore, a place for her new found companions to rest on their journeys.

Zorga's face popped into her head. She wished the hermit would be willing to move his magickal home next to her future inn, but Sasha knew that he was firmly rooted in his charming hut. Not that she could blame him.

Sasha now needed to focus on earning money for to buy an existing inn or to build a new one. And then stocking it...even if she had to work taverns for years, this was a dream that Sasha would not be denied.

"No," Sasha answered habitually. Seeing Terrance, she shook her head stilled her startled pulse. "I'm sorry. I was just thinking about the future." She did her best to give a descriptive but brief explanation of her dreams for a sea-side inn. "Zorga got to me in more ways than one, I think. Even if I do happen upon some merpeople, I wouldn't mind. I don't want to be bitter anymore."

She paused to gather her thoughts and words. "As sure as the sun, what they did to me will never be forgotten in my mind, but my desire for the sea is becoming stronger than my bitterness." Sasha chuckled. "Running an inn may not be terribly adventerous, but I would meet a lot of people. Perhaps yew all could stop in for a rest on yer journeys. No charge for the stay."

Sasha blushed, feeling as though she had rambled on for far too long. "What plans have yew for yer future?

Terrance frowned as he concentrated, thinking of how to form his response.

"I have only one goal - to regain the memories of my past. Painful or no, I must recover them." His voice was soft, yet held an undertone of iron determination.

"When and if I achieve such, I have no...thoughts as to what I will do afterward. I suppose I shall remain in Eddellyn's employ - assuming we will still be traveling together - until I find a new goal."

He was silent for a moment, a rueful smile on his lips. "It's a good thing, being able to overcome bitterness. I wonder if I too, might do so one day." He lapsed into silence after that, seemingly brooding in his own thoughts.

By The Bitter ShaeFlawr (Sasha)

Sunday, October 4, 2009 - 12:53 am GMT Edit | Link |

"Yew are strong, Terrance. Yew will not let bitterness to tread on yew for ever. And I pray yer memories are not demons," Sasha offered. "Yew know, it never occured to me that I should be grateful that I can remember the things that happened to me. I can't imagine what it must be like for yew to lack those memories."

Now she paused, taking a risk with her next choice of words. "Whatever yer memories may hide, whatever a person they make yew out to be, yew are who yew are now, not who yew were then. Yew make the choice to be who yew want to be with every sunrise. We all do."

Sasha cleared her head with a shake. Time for a new subject. "So do yew happen to know if this is called Seabreeze Road for a reason? I mean, is there a sea nearby?"

Her heart gave a flutter, suddenly unsure that she wanted the answer. For if there was a sea, then the journey on this road could quite possibly be her extent of days with this band that she had joined herself to. Suddenly the adventure of an inn dwarfed in comparison to traveling with ones as Lanno, Terrance, and Edde.

Terrance paused once more before answering - he seemed the sort of person to sort out his words before answering. Though he only could remember the previous two years of his life, he had spent most of it traveling the Worlde, learning much of it.

"We were actually closer to the sea back in Seven Oaks. Geographically, Terajin is set inland, so we are traveling away from the coast. My understanding is this stretch of the Lorimar is called the Seabreeze Road because Anadia's wind current flows across it, and it carries the scent of the sea along with it." Terrance inhaled deeply. "The salt from the ocean water still lingers in the air here."

Lanno followed after Terrance and Sasha in silence, listening to their conversation while at the same time watching everything around him. He'd never travelled so far in a forest before, and though the air did carry the scent of the sea along with it, he could also smell the mustiness of the forest floor. It was covered with what looked like lumps of green sponge - something he'd heard Edde call 'moss', and other plants. The forest was filled with different animals than what he was used to - he guessed by the chirps and whistles that most were birds, but occasionally he heard something different. The Hafling had heard of wolves before, and that they made a sound like a lonely howl, but he hadn't encountered them before. His older cousins used to tell stories about wolves stealing away Hafling children who didn't listen to their parents, something that had always bothered Lanno.

He looked back at Edde and Orein, curious about what they were up to, but they were a little too far behind for him to talk to comfortably without raising his voice. Lanno settled for patting Breeze's neck, and continued anxiously looking around at the forest.

As she followed behind the others, Eddellyn filled the silence between her and Orein with idle chatter and stories about her previous time spent in Aniada. "…and while the merchant went to check on his tent, several of us kept his wagon company." There was a mildly self-satisfied note in the elf's tone and no hint of remorse as she recalled the event. "I daresay he was not quick to turn his back on his belongings again after that… If I recall correctly, I got a fine pair of gloves out of that bit of work." Eddellyn glanced over her shoulder at the Fae and winked at him.

She kept up the talk until mid-day when she finally trailed off, at last letting her mind turn toward her dream-vision from the evening before. Eddellyn had her reasons for deciding not to share her purpose in going to Terajin. The least of them was she felt no need to tell the others that a seemingly powerful mage was summoning her for the gods knew what intention, other than it could not be good.

As she dwelled on these thoughts a dull throbbing began in the back of her neck and she slid a hand beneath her hair to rub it, hoping to ease the ache. The motion did little to stop the discomfort and she found herself fidgeting slightly as the twinge settled downward between her shoulder blades. With her mouth pressed into a thin line of discomfort she urged her horse ahead until she was abreast of Terrance and Sasha. Clearing her throat, she interrupted their conversation.

"What do yew two think of stopping for a five minute break? Get out of the saddle for a few minutes, stretch our legs?"

Orein had not answered Eddellyn's earlier question about where his thoughts had been this morning and only smiled and shook his head at her. During their ride he listened with childish curiosity to her story and even giggled with genuine laughter and greeted her with a bright smile at her wink, though his mouth remain closed for some reason.

As her stories trailed off so did his expression and he found himself slipping into his own thoughts again. He was becoming more aware of himself and his very nature. Whatever changes his body had been going through were now at an end, and his injuries now only dull reminders of a battle he could no longer remember.

He lifted his head and closed his eyes as the forest breezed blew through hair, his two long braids dancing behind him. He felt a light change in Yah-Jin's movements which caused him to open his eyes again noticing Eddellyn rubbing her neck. He frowned slightly at this with a bit of worry.

As they caught up to Terrance and Sasha he decided to speak up after Eddellyn's remark.

"I could really use a small stretch about now..." his tone was even as he glanced over at Terrance, his emerald eyes focused on him.

Terrance turned his head to the side as Eddellyn rode up on his other side, suggesting a short rest. His eyes briefly flickering to Orien, their gaze meeting for a moment, before he nodded.

"That's fine with me. Let's rest for a moment."

No doubt Eddellyn was trying to set an easier pace for Sasha and Orien. Terrance was used to pushing himself during traveling, and Edde had yet to set a pace he'd had difficulty keeping with.

A grassy plain a short distance away became their rest area and Terrance dismounted, letting Sprint graze while he stretched his legs.

Lanno shrugged and brought Breeze to a halt when the others stopped in the small clearing. He'd found travelling by horseback difficult at first, and his legs and rear end did feel a little sore, but the Hafling's body was resilient, a result of having spent so much time at sea. He still found it hard to dismount, and at one point managed to catch both feet in the same stirrup. He slipped awkwardly, face-first, off of Breeze and quickly got to his feet, hoping the others hadn't seen him. He brushed the dust off of his face and shoulders, but was unaware of the dirt and twigs in his hair.

Despite the mess, Lanno was feeling himself again, and he ran up to Orein with a wide smile on his face. "Hey Orein, what do yew think of this place? I've never been to a forest before, have yew? Are they always this dark? Yew know, I heard a story once - no, not one that happened to me - it was my uncle Jarrli. He once met a troll in a forest like this and nearly got eaten, except that some huge spiders came along and jumped on the troll before he had a chance to eat him. My uncle that is. And I mean before the troll had a chance to eat my uncle, not before my uncle could eat the troll. I don't expect that would taste too nice. Not that I have any experience with eating a troll..."

The Hafling scratched his head, dislodging the twig from the top of his hair so that it now hung down one side of his head. "I don't really know where I was going with that story, Orein. So how're yew doing now?" He leaned closer to Orein and whispered. "Are yer wings feeling okay?"

Orein dismounted and steady himself, his focus laid on Eddellyn until Lanno caught his attention. He giggled a bit as his story went on and began to think of what the book had written to him a few days back about it being his choice if he shared anything he was going through with those around him, but his mind had cleared since he "woke" up and the connection and attachment to Eddellyn, Terrance, and Lanno, still seemed strong. He felt he had no real reason to hold anything back. With a slight sigh he spoke more than he had in awhile, mostly to Lanno, who was probably getting more than he had really asked for, but also not hiding it from anyone in ear shot as if also finally answering Eddellyn's question to him this morning.

"I am not sure Lanno... about the forest that is. Though this environment does seem a bit more familiar to me." he shrugged "It seems I can no longer remember much of anything about my past... Yew probably know me better than I know myself now. I mean I know yew.. I know Eddellyn and Terrance.. even Sasha there. There are a few others in my mind as well.. people that I know are important... but that is about it... Is that weird?" he frowned a bit, but then grinned revealing the two small, probably harmless, fangs he had been concealing the last two days. They only seemed to be visible when he showed his teeth. He wondered if any of them would be afraid of the slight differences between them and him. "I don't believe I will loose any more memory... but its just a guess at best... to me it is as if I woke up for the first time a couple days ago in a way, but not quite that either... it's hard to explain." He stretch his arms out, the expression on his face seemed to lighten quite a bit. "My instincts tell me that I am right where I need to be... and that I shouldn't really dwell on that which I can probably never get back, and in all honestly I really do want to be here with all of yew. That is the is the best answer I can give to my own questions in my mind." He looked over at Eddellyn than back to Lanno wondering what the Hafling might be thinking now, but then his eyes slightly twinged as he became conscious of his wings that the book had warned him he should keep hidden from those he did not trust. Obviously he had trusted Lanno enough to reveal them. He lowered his voice a bit.

"It seems I am used to keeping them this way... though I do have the urge to just let them be free. Let the wind blow through them. I am sure they will be okay" he winked with a bright smile, satisfied with the weight that had been lifted from his own words. He sat down on a nearby stone and stretched his legs out.

Lanno sat down next to Orein. "I expect one day yew'll need to do just that." He leaned over and whispered, "Open yer wings that is, but for now its probably good to keep them like that." A strange feeling passed over the Hafling. He wasn't a suspicious person, in fact, quite the opposite, he was prone to saying much more than he should on most occasions. For some reason though, he felt this was something that had to be kept quiet. "I don't expect the others with us would do anything, but if we met someone on the road who didn't have good intentions for us, it might err...I dunno."

Lanno shrugged and rummaged through his pack for some trail rations. He ripped off a piece and held out the rest. "Yew want some?"

"About the other stuff - I think it is a little weird that yew can't remember a lot about yer past, but it sure isn't the weirdest thing I ever heard of. Maybe its just like yew say that yer instincts are telling yew that yer right where yew need to be - maybe yer not supposed to remember everything." Lanno shrugged and took another bite of food.

"My dad couldn't remember everything, which was why he learned how to read and write. He made me learn too, even though I always found it easy to remember quite a bit." He scratched his forehead and mused, "I suppose my memory can get jumbled up from time to time though. Maybe that's why the hermit gave me the parchment to write on."

Lanno took another bite of trail rations, and started to talk again. However, he choked and sputtered as a small piece of food went down into his windpipe. After a few moments of red-faced coughing, he motioned for Orein to smack his back.

Orein listened as he stretched out his legs and gladly accepted a bit of the ration offered to him by Lanno. He seemed to internalize his thoughts again until his attention was caught when Lanno suddenly seemed to start choking. Immediately he jumped to his feet and hit Lanno's back to help him dislodge the offending piece of food.

"Come on Lanno breath! Don't yew dare let a piece of food be how yer book ends!"he looked on with worry hoping the smacks would be enough to help.

Lanno coughed and spluttered as the offending piece of food was dislodged from his throat. The Hafling looked back and smiled weakly at his friend. "Thanks Orein. I think I'm okay now."

Then, as if nothing had happened, Lanno resumed talking. "I remember my father told me a story about something he'd had to write down about the time a shipful of Orcs came to Kiana. They were big and loud, and they smelled awful, and they tried to take over the town. Luckily, that didn't happen - on account of all the warriors. And the witch too." The Hafling paused and chewed on his lip, trying to remember how that story went, but it had been a long time since his father had told him.

"I hope we don't meet any on the way to Terajin," he said quietly.

Sasha went silent. The sea was behind her and its call was nearly undeniable. But as was the call of her companions and the adventure ahead. Which way was the better way?

If she went back, she would be settling down for good, no more journeys like this one. All of her time and money would have to go to the building of her inn. Was she ready to abandon this life, this road she was on? Sasha closed her eyes; she could smell the sea and taste the water. She remembered the safety of being enclosed in the water. Perhaps she could make this inn servicable to merpeople as well as land dwellers.

She glanced over her companions as they settled to rest and eat. The strong Edde, the mysterious Terrance, amusing Lanno, and curious Orein. These were the closest she'd had to family since her change. These travelers would always be her family.

She hoped to see them all again one day in her inn.

Sasha remounted her steed, trying to make her face expressionless long enough to say goodbye. She looked at he who had been her closest friend on the journey. "If yew ever come back, the Fellowship Inn will be open to yew and whoever is with yew," she said, bowing her head to Terrance respectfully. Sasha knew he would understand better than anyone what she was doing and why. The goodbye had to be short, for it was the only one, save the goodbye with Zorga, where she knew she would miss those she left. "I wish yew the best of luck on yer journey to yer past." Raising her voice as she turned her horse back towards the way they had come, she shouted over her shoulder, "Be well my friends!"

Sasha edged her steed onto a full gallop. She couldn't tell if the water drops streaming from her eyes were from the wind or if her tears were falling. Either way, she had made her final decision. The faces of her companions, ever etched in her memory, would be her inspiration. She would never forget any of them.

With a small stretch after standing, Orein spent some time checking Yah-jin's saddle and making sure things were ready to go for when they departed again. It was then he heard the departing words of Sasha. He gave a small wave with a bit of sadness to see her leave, their time together had been so short that he had not had the chance to really converse with her as much he may had wanted to.

His eye's flashed crimson for a moment, a curious aura forming around him as he stared at Sasha vanishing into the distance, but the aura quickly disappeared as he lowered his head and closed his eyes. Some sense of understanding washing over him as if what he had just seen through his eyes was natural.

"Maybe fate will bring us together again... or not.. it seems the future is a tricky thing that changes moment by moment..." he half whispered to himself.

Terrance sat in silence for a while, lost in his own thoughts. When Sasha mounted her steed and departed, Terrance felt a strange pang of disappointment. As she turned and galloped away, Terrance sat for a moment longer, and making a decision, stood up.

"I'm sorry everyone...but I'm going to head back as well. My destination lies south, in Thapelel." And hopefully my lost memories with them. He thought to himself.

He said goodbye to Orien and Lanno only briefly; Terrance had not really gotten to know them all that well...and then turned to Eddellyn.

"It was...good to travel with yew. Should we meet again, and yew find yerself in need of assistance, I will lend my sword if I can. Fare well."

Mounting his own horse, he spurred Sprint into a gallop and headed off down the road. If he were quick, perhaps he could catch up to Sasha.

She knew she should slow her steed from his full gallop, but somehow Sasha felt that if she rode hard and fast, she would soon be too far away for the temptation to turn back. The road ahead would be more dangerous as she traveled alone, but she was confident that she would have no trouble.

That or she would spend all of her nights lying awake in fear of the shadows.

Part of her was embarrassed. She'd had to come this far from the sea in order to return to it. Of course, the idea of the inn was rather new. Before it, she had been determined to travel as far inland as possible. Now with her new dreams, she had to backwards in order to go forward.

Again the faces of her friends flashed in her memory. She would have to find an artist who could take her description of the troope and turn it into a portrait to hang in her inn. She couldn't help but wonder how Zorga would feel about his portrait being made. Perhaps it would be better to symbolize him in some way as opposed to giving his picture.

She could just ask Ter-

Well, she could've asked Terrance had she stayed with the group. Sasha blinked back tears, still too stubborn to let them fall. The memory of her friends would be her guide as she built her inn. It would be strong, warm, inviting, varnished in dark polish, full of the comforts of home. Though, not her home necessarily. At least, not until she could work on the merpeople's wing.

Sasha shook her head and clutched the reigns tighter. Better not to paint Zorga. Just in case.

His horse had, apparantly, gotten sufficient rest to ride at a full gallop, and so Terrance urged Sprint on. He cursed himself for not going after Sasha sooner.

Why am I going after her?

Terrance had even surprised himself at his sudden decision to up and chase her down. Part of the reason had to do with the fact that she had been the only one he had connected with - besides Edde - since going on his journey. But Terrance was used to being alone, so there had to be more.

Perhaps he just wanted to make sure she was alright. Terrance didn't claim to be an authority on Shaeflowers, but Sasha hadn't seemed the warrior type, and the Worlde was not always a safe place for a young woman to be on her own.

More likely it was because of Zorga's prodding. The old man had obviously hinted that he should get to know her better - or vice versa. Terrance didn't appreciate the meddling, but trusted the old hermit enough to know that he often had reasons for his actions.

What snapped Terrance out of his musing was a dot on the road ahead of him. Even from a distance away, the swordsman could make out the red hair waving in the wind. That was Sasha, to be sure.

Urging his horse onward, Terrance continued following...

A noise jolted Sasha from her musings. A faint rumbling - She looked behind her. Someone on a horse was charging after her and gaining.

Her heart began to race, but she tried to keep a cool head. Could some less than savory character be trying to overtake her to rob her? Well, there had been no one in the woods thus far, and her companions would have taken care of any threat had one arisen. Perhaps she had forgotten something and now someone was riding to return it to her? Sasha looked about her belongings as her steed continued his pace. Everything seemed to be with her, her dagger, Zorga's cloak...

She decided to take the risk and slow her horse. If nothing else, surely he could use a break. She patted his neck while reaching for her dagger. If worst came to worst, she could flee to the trees and hide under the magickal protection that Zorga's cloak promised.

The hoofbeats grew louder. Friend or foe, Sasha would soon find out. She looked back again and blinked. She knew the rider, but what reason could the lone wolf possibly have to be following her? She turned her horse around and rode to meet Terrance. "Be something the matter, Sir Terrance?" she called.

When he spied the young woman turning her horse around to meet him, Terrance slowed the racing pace of his own mount. As Sasha neared he came to a stop. He was mildly amused by her formal address of 'sir,' but it faded as he tried to form an answer to her question.

"Mayhap yew should...I thought..." He stopped stuttering, annoyed with himself. It was unlike Terrance to stumble over his words.

"It is...unwise for a young woman to travel alone, especially with the eve approaching." His gaze turned to the sky, which only now was beginning to change from blue to layers of gold and pink. Dark brown eyes turned back to look into her gray ones.

"Perhaps I might escort yew to yer destination?"

I am going to go ahead and move us forward in hopes that Eddellyn will make her return eventually (check yer email) I hope that is okay)

A slight smile came over Orein's lips to mask the dreading feeling coming over him as Terrance said his goodbyes and departed. The child knew that he was taking to road he felt he must. Those two, Terrance and Sasha, had forged their own road, and the time for parting was now here. He was no longer tied to their "fate". He now glanced at the remaining three companions... or was it now two... Eddellyn did not seem to be in sight. He wondered if all their destinies were changing as well, and what his own would be at the end of this road. Did the person in the book know and chose to hide it from him?

"I believe we have our own destiny to attend too." he said with a slight smile "I have rested enough, maybe we should be on our way as well? Terajin will not get any closer by remaining still and there is still a bit of daylight left. This is still my destination" with a nod he mounted Yah-Jin and took the reigns himself. "I believe Yah-jin is used to me by now. Prehaps I can handle the riding on my own." he felt a sudden saddness well up in him, did Eddellyn leave? Then he looked down at Lanno his expression sad.

"What does yer destiny tell yew my friend? Will yew continue to Terajin with me? I am not sure our dear friend has chosen to continue with us." The road ahead now seemed so foreboding and scary. Eddellyn had always been there for him had she not... protected him.. was family. He knew it deep inside, even the book had clarified this for him. He looked away from Lanno. He could not blame him if his destiny called him to somewhere else as well. Maybe it was his own destiny to travel alone. The boy could not help but to let the tears fall, but he would have to face what ever was ahead and pray that the future would reunite them all again.... but how would he ever make it without Eddellyn. He did not have the slightest answer for this.

Let's keep going Orein!)

Lanno patted Orein on the shoulder. "Yep, I'm with yew." He felt a pang of sorrow when he saw Orein cry, and for a moment stood motionless, uncertain what to do. The Hafling scratched his chin, and then remembered. He rummaged through his backpack. "Where is it?" he mumbled to himself several times as he checked through his belongings, until he found what he had been looking for.

"Ha! Here it is!" he exclaimed as he found a small white handkerchief. "My mom made this for me when I was small. Not that I used it to cry into. But when I first left to go sailing, she thought it would be nice to have something to remind me of home. It worked too - whenever I feel lonely, it reminds me of how much fun we had. Well, except for when my older brother used to play jokes on me. Did I tell yew about the time he threw a bucket of chum and salt water on me when I was asleep one night after our midsummer's feast? Sure, I'd had a little too much... fun the night before, and maybe I'd kissed the girl that he had a crush on, but that doesn't give him the right to throw fish guts and sea water on me when I'm sleeping!"

He held out the handkerchief to Orein. "Hmm. Guess not everything about home was nice, but mom was. Anyways, I think yer right - we need to get going. Besides, I've never been to Terajin," he said with an excited grin.

Sasha blinked and then smiled. She was both relieved and grateful for Terrance's unexpected presence. "I would greatly appreciate the company," she assured, amused by his stutter.

She turned her steed back towards her destination, favoring a slower pace both for the horse's sake, and for conversation. "Perhaps when we stop to rest, yew could teach me yer skills?" she questioned. "That way I could better help with the night watch. Tis certainly unfair to ask yew to stay up all night and then ride all day.I don't want to be a burden, to be sure."

Because Sasha knew that Terrance was not always the most open of umans, she let her other question remain mute. Her curiosity, however, was intense to say the least. She could not understand why his departure had been as abrupt as her own. He had seemed so set on traveling with Edde and the others. What could have changed? Her protection was a nobel, humbling cause, but she couldn't help feeling that there was more.

What else lay behind his guarded expression? Perhaps she would later find out. The night was descending. What would it reveal?

He seemed to have regained his composure, for Terrance held his tongue before answering the maiden's question. It was a reasonable request; despite his best intentions, he would not be able to watch her at all times. It would be good for her to learn some self-defense.

Did he have the ability to teach, however? Terrance did not remember what training or experiences had molded him into the warrior he was. His body simply remembered the stances, the blocks and attack positions.

"I can teach yew the most basic of self-defense and techniques. After that, only practice and time will make yew stronger. Yew needn't worry about exhausting me...I've more stamina than most. And should anything approach while yer keeping watch, it would be best to wake me, regardless."

Afterwards he fell silent, riding abreast with Sasha's horse along the road. He let some time lapse - mulling over his thoughts in his head - before asking his next question.

"Where exactly are we going to?"

By The Bitter ShaeFlawr (Sasha)

Sasha nodded. The basics would be good. While she would rather say that she had mastered the basics, she really had had no special training of any kind and was thinking only of what she planned to do in situations. Practicing reactions over and over would certainly make her a more formidable foe if challenged.

She parted from her thoughts and looked up when Terrance questioned her. Despite herself, she chuckled. "I was simply planning on following the road to Seven Oaks. I was going to attempt to get a job there to begin to save for the Fellowship, but there is already an inn there. It is the place I discovered yew and the rest of our companions, where I worked for some time.

"But," she paused, a quizative expression on her gently freckled face, "now I wonder if Seven Oaks really needs another inn. Perhaps it would be better for me to travel elsewhere to seek grounds for the Fellowship. Where might that be though?" She was now talking to herself more than to her fellow rider. These were such things she should have thought of before. Now she could see herself for what she was: a dreamer. But a determined dreamer, she told herself.

A memory made her smile. "I wish we could make the journey to Zorga's for the night," Sasha sighed. "I do miss him, and I'm certain that he would be able to lend me some guidence." She bit her lip. Despite the coming darkness, she desperately wanted to press on. Now she looked at Terrance. "What say yew? Could we make the ride to Zorga's hut tonight?"

Orein smiled the best he could, lightly dabbing his eyes with the handkerchief then handed it back to Lanno.

"Thank yew Lanno, it means a great deal to me that yew will travel on with me. I must admit that traveling this road alone would have been most saddening. I do not know why Edellyn has left us... but I do know she is no longer here. I can feel it. So... The only thing I can do is to continue on to Terajin as planned, and wait for her there, praying that she will return to us, or face the reality.. that." he closed his eyes not wishing to finish the words as he turn Yah-jin towards the open road again. He waited for Lanno to get settled on Breeze, then continued down the road, looking back to where he had last seen Eddellyn's figure one more time.

"Why did yew go where I could not follow..." another tear dripped down his cheek, but he turned forward again and concentrated on the road ahead. He was a boy... he had to be strong didn't he? He shook his head.

He remained silent as they rode for the next several hours, only nodding to anything Lanno may have said to him. He was considering their circumstances now. Eddellyn and Terrance had been the strongest among them. They had been left in a very dangerous situation that concerned him. Orein could not remember if he actually knew how to defend himself if the situation arose and wondered if Lanno had any fighting experience himself. A child and a Hafling would seem like easy targets for anyone who was looking for travelers along the road. This thought shook him for a moment, before glancing up to the sky.

"I think we may only have an hour at most before we will have to stop and make camp wouldn't yew say? Maybe we should start looking for a place to stop and rest for the night." this new found role seemed strange to him, he had been used to Eddellyn making all the decisions, and just having to assist her where needed. It made him feel anxious and nervous, but he did the best not to let it show.

Terrance shifted his gaze from Sasha to the sky, where the golden disc of the sun had just sunk below the horizon. Darkness would soon be on them.

"We made good distance this afternoon...if we ride now we should reach Zorga's hut shortly after dark. I'll lead; the hut can be difficult to find." Despite his words, Terrance had always been able to find the hut in the woods, unerringly. Yet it was a well-hidden locale; strange how he always managed to find it.

As he urged his horse on again, he reflected on what Sasha had said. Not only did Seven Oaks not need another inn, the Seven Oaks Inn was one of the most famous and profitable establishments in Anadia, if not the Worlde. Zorga has once told Terrance that that inn saw more travelers pass through it than any other. What chance would a small, new opening inn have against the mighty Seven Oaks?

He mused over a good spot for setting up an inn would be, as daylight faded and the stars began to twinkle.

Lanno, who'd spent much of his life at sea, often in what seemed like more dangerous conditions than this forest, looked over at Orein and shrugged. He also did not realize how dangerous it was for horses to travel at night, when an ankle could catch a dip in the road and cause a sprain or even a break. He noticed the anxiety in Orein's eyes, and thought perhaps his friend was feeling tired - and overwhelmed by their recent abandonment - so he acquiesced. "That sounds like a good idea. I could use some supper anyways. I'm sooo hungry, I could eat a horse!"

When his mount nickered, Lanno blushed. "Ahh...err. Sorry, Breeze. I didn't really mean that. I'd never eat a horse." Even though, the Hafling did wonder what he would do if he were stuck in the middle of a desert with no food except for a horse. Lanno shook off the eerie feeling that had settled over him and looked around at the trees. At night, they almost seemed to close around them, and the Hafling felt a sense of unease that he'd not felt in a long time.

"Yeah, I think a place to stop is a good idea. There's a little clearing just off the road over there," he said, pointing to a small flat area protected on three sides by some large fir trees.

Orein nodded to Lanno and headed for the clearing not too far ahead. Yah-Jin had been weary of him at the reigns and it was probably a good time to let the horse rest.

He made quick work of dismounting and settling Yah-Jin in for the night, then began to help set up camp. With the others gone now it did not take as much as time as he thought it might have with only two people to worry about now. It was truly just Lanno and himself now. He tired his best for Lanno making light conversation with him as he gathered the wood and started up the fire for the night, but his emotions were becoming more transparent as the night settled in.

When he found some time for himself he sat himself on his bedroll near the fire, and began to lay his possessions down neatly beside him, trying to make some sense of his life before, he turned to the eerie book and began to write.

"Eddellyn, Terrance, and Sasha have left Lanno and I on our own." he waited for the response as the words he wrote vanished into the pages.

"Life is full of meetings and departures Orein. This is but one of many yew will experience. Even when the bonds are strong, like Eddellyn and yerself, there are always times when yew must say goodbye."

"But wasn't Eddellyn suppose to take care of me? I am just a child. I don't know what I am suppose to do. I thought she cared about me... why would she just leave without a word?" a tear drop onto the pages.

"I know yer sad, hurt, and confused, but yew must try and remain strong. Lanno is still by yer side and that is something to be thankful for. Eddellyn is doing what she feels she has to, and I am sure she did not make this decision lightly as yew once had to. Yes... There was a time when yew once had to abandon her as well, for reasons that were important. Sometimes there are times when yew are forced to do things on yer own even if that means leaving yer comrades behind. Please do not fault her for having to make this decision." Orein sighed as the book reveal something else about his past he could no longer remember, a time when he too had left his friends without a word. Tried as he might, nothing came to mind when he searched for his lost memories. He thought for a moment then wrote again.

"How will I take care of myself? Defend myself? I can not remember anything about myself. What I can do, how to protect myself..." he waited as the book took longer to respond as if the book itself was taking a moment to think.

"I can tell yew this Orein. Within yew lies a power unknown yet to this worlde. It could be complex and extremely dangerous, or nothing more than simple parlor tricks. Even I do not know what yer are capable of, but this does not mean I have left yew unprepared. I considered the fact that there could come a time when yew very well could end up on yer own before discovering what yew could do on yer own, so before I left Seven Oaks I recovered an artifact that once belonged to the Fae Queendom. The other book that should still be in yer possession is called a Grimoire. Though this one is quite unique. Orein looked down at his possession and carefully lifted the other book. He had examined this book before, but just like the "talking" one, it's pages were also blank, leading him to believe his other self had a fascination with blank books.

He looked back to the other book to continue reading the words that were still forming. "Unlike other Grimoires that are used to to call out magickal powers the wielder may not have learned themselves, this one does something quite different. It helps the user to develop their own magickal abilities by drawing on the magickal energy within the wielder. By now I am hoping yer body has recovered to some extent because this Grimoire is completely void of mana. I am afraid the last battle I had I was forced to use the last of its energy to help protect our comrades and the citizens of Seven Oaks.... Orein frowned beginning to think the book might be useless. "...This will actually work in yer favor though, so don't loose hope. If yew are recovered enough yew should be able to learn to call forth yer new mana, and with that yew will be able to imprint this magickal energy onto the Grimoire."

Orein furiously began to write again his head filled with a million questions, but nothing would appear on the page as he wrote. He had learned before on previous nights that it seemed, what he now nicknamed the Ghost Book, could only write so much per day before the jewel on the front would stop shining and the book going back to nothing but blank pages. He was forced to close it and wait for the red jewel to shine again.

He put away his possessions including the Ghost Book, but left out the Grimoire which he now held up in his hands.

"So this thing will help me... but I don't understand how... and what about this "mana" thing... do I really have that within me like the Ghost Book says?" he closed his eyes and searched, but all he could find was the rumbling in his stomach. He carried the Grimoire with him as he sought out what Lanno and himself would make for dinner this night.

Orein took stock of what supplies they had between them and knew that they should be able to make it to Terajin with what they had. He had chosen to take a turn cooking, though he was unsure if he had done a adequate job of it, but it was food nonetheless.

He did his best to make pleasant conversation with Lanno that night, and listen to all his wondrous tales of his life, in thanks for for bearing with his saddened mood. Sleep would not come easy to him that night as he studied the map on what was on the road ahead. He was still so unsure of himself, and the "conversation" with the Ghost Book had only provided a bit of comfort. He spent some time studying the Grimorie, closing his eyes and trying to find the "Mana" within him as the Ghost Book had mentioned, and sure enough he could feel something flowing from him into the book. It was a eerie feeling to him as he had not given much thought to the flow of energy within him and as he concentrated harder Faeish writing began to appear on the first few pages.

He opened his eyes and began to read. "The Fae's Blessing", "Crimson Eyes", and "Demon's Claw" were the only titles to appear on the first page. One seemed to be instruction on the healing of minor injuries and the others were more of an explanation on traits that apparently he contained. He scratched his head wondering if what he was reading about could really be performed by him. He had a lot of doubt, but figured his time on the road would provide the answer. Knowing the lateness of the hour he slowly drifted off to sleep, one that was as restless as his thoughts.

Just before the break in the first morning's light, Orein had already awoke and made preparations for them to leave. It was only a few hours ride to the next stretch, and he was hoping to make it to the halfway point between Seven Oaks and Terajin within the next day or two depending on the pace they could keep.

"I think we can make a good distance today." he said brightly with a smile. He walk over and showed Lanno the map with a tiny bit of concern, but Orein had given it much thought on the previous night. "... well more that we have to. The next stretch is a bit dangerous from what I have studied on the map and I would think it would be best if we push hard through it this day. I think we should make camp just before we reach the Knight's Way... for that stretch seems to be worse if I am reading correctly... this was a bad stretch to be left on our own for... but I have faith that with a bit of luck, and a couple of days hard riding, we can make it through it." He walked over and patted Yah-Jin as he packed up the map and mounted up.

"Yah-Jin and Breeze may not be happy with us... but if we can just make it to the Merchant's Way we can slow our pace and even pick up a few more supplies if we need." he looked on up ahead weary of what was to come, but clicked his heels and pushed forward. It was only a couple of hours later when the next stretch came into sight.

Lanno nodded and readied himself as quickly as Orein. Though he'd chattered on endlessly the night before about a few of his adventures at sea, the Hafling had noticed his friend's increasing interest in his book. Lanno thought he'd called a grimor or grimyar, or something like that, but whatever it was, it looked like it might have something to do with magick. He hoped that his friend wasn't losing himself in the whatever spells might surround the book, and Lanno had to admit, that Orein seemed more confident the following morning. Still, Lanno watched his friend closely.

When the Hafling looked at the map, he nodded his head vigourously in response to Orein's suggestion about moving through the next couple of days as quickly as possible. He had no wish to spend a lot of time in the forest - it had a 'dark' feeling to it, and it seemed to be getting 'darker' the further on they travelled.

Lanno patted Breeze's flank and spoke happily to him as they set off along the next stretch of the Lorimar Road. "Yew know, Orein, I expect Yah-Jin and Breeze will be just as happy as us to get through here as quickly as we'd like. Yew know, that reminds me about the time I - Eww. Yuck!" The Hafling shouted as a small yellow spider floated down from a branch above him and landed on his arm.

Lanno swept the spider off of his arm, and shook as he was overcome with a case of the 'heeby jeebies'. The Hafling failed to notice the other passenger that landed on his pack and crawled inside.
