Worlde Arcane: Aniada: Green Forest: The Lorimar Road 5: The Goblin Stretch

Each section of the Lorimar Road spans a approximately a full days' ride, or roughly two days' march afoot.
The odious proximity of Churt, City of the Orcs, makes this league the foulest and most feared of all the walks of the Lorimar. Extreme caution will serve a traveller well here, as will a mighty weapon.
Currently, the Orcs have set up a roadblock where the Skulled Road intersects the Lorimar Road.

•Northward travel leads to The Skulled Road to Churt , two days' ride shall see one in Churt
•Southeastward travel leads to Southern Green League, and Daelows City be three days' ride away
•Westward travel leads to Northern Green League, with Kiana five days' ride away.
•All travellers must pass through The Orc Road Block before continuing on.

A long night later, both awoke. There was silence between them and the air was not just winter cold but also devoid of emotion. The usual strong affectionate bond between them felt strange and distant. Neither had a horse now and the journey back seemed long. Their previous travel companion was not nearby now and while Stephen was keen to find Kent again Ben was scared of what would happen. Every five minutes he would glance down at his body to see it slowly fluctuating in and out of existence. In those terrifying moments all he saw was a pulsating dead light where his hand was.

The hand that held the gem.

His mouth dry he looked at Stephen, his eyes hollow and turned to walk on, trudging through the trees and around the roadblock.

After little more than an hour, the two figures emerged on the road from the forest near to the road block. It was murky and getting dark, but they had managed to make it back to the road without harm coming to them. They had not been taken as far east of the road block as Paden expected, but he recognized this stretch of the road, having ridden it not long ago.
"We should continue in the direction of the Daelows frontier until we find a place to camp for the night...hopefully soon, its getting dark."

Paden would normally not have a problem traveling by night, but they were poorly equiped for any travel and were doing it on foot, which would take them at least twice as long. It would most likely take them a further two days to reach the southern green league, and then they could commandeer some horses from a patrol or other source, and make their way to Daelows, or to catch up with Lady Jillian, who would probably have at least two days head start on them, if not more. Paden judged that she would not be much further due to the large amount of organization it took to move a baggage train and siege weaponry, however, by the amount of time that had been spent on the journey to Churt, she could be almost into Daelows City by now. If Paden had to be honest, his senses were a little dulled by whatever had gone on on the road to Churt, and he had lost all sense of time.

"Just let me know as soon as yew see a suitable camping spot, if things go well, we could get back to Daelows in five days time."

He continued up the road, searching the sides for clearings and such in which they could make camp.

(OOC:

As I said on the Skulled Road, we will play out that we have been taken quickly by mount to a spot just off the road, hopefully we will not catch up to lady Jillian to quickly. I am not sure how many days we are supposed to be ahead of them, but we might be able to take it slow, and let them catch up to a more reasonable time frame, rather than having discontinuity.)

Warden-Trooper Rand tramped along with teh Woodsman through the gloom under the dense forest canopy from off THE SKULLED ROAD TO CHURT, his gold-trimmed red uniform tunic and yellow hose the only bright colours around. His yellow leather riding gauntlets were thrust under his swordbelt--the scabbard of which was empty. Even the chainmail he wore under his tunic failed to sparkle in the dim forest light.

The two spoke only rarely, perhaps from the confusion of what had transpired when they met the orcs, perhaps merely from the wearing effect of the long journey which now contined afoot. But when the House Agent asked after a campsite, the cavalryman replied gloomily, "Two men afoot hardly need much of a camp, carrying as we be naught more than iron rations...But, yon small clearing doth seem suitable for camp," he offered, pointing in the direction of a clearing visible through the trees, less than a bowshot off the highway.

(OOC:

Didn't feel it necessary to create a new thread fro such a small camp)

Paden observed the small clearing at the side of the road. He agreed with the Warden that two men did not need much in the way of a camp, but he still wanted a half decent area that was perhaps a little concealed from the road. This clearing would work. While not concealed from the road, if they were to bed down in it, it would be easy for Paden to disguise any trace of them entering, which would hopefully provide the necessary protection to them, coupled with a shift on watch each.

"Very well, we might as well stop for the night. It has been a trying day. We probably shouldn't risk a fire in the poor condition we have been left in." He moved into the clearing and removed what scant possessions he had, his satchel containing the documents for his mission, as well as the money for his first payment, which the orcs had not surprisingly taken. He would probably have to return this to Duke Griphon, unless he gained some sort of speed, and could still make it to Gning Nar after this set back.

"Would yew like to do the first or the second watch for the night? In the morning I will try and snare something to eat, so we have a bit more than iron rations."

Paden laughed at the Wardens little joke, and was the first humour he had appreciated since their brief captivity.
"Well, Trooper, if yew are that much in need, then we could always return to Churt and see if we can find an Orc Maiden..." Paden grinned.

"Otherwise we had best try our best to get some horses, and speed our journey back to Daelows..."

Paden lapsed into silence for a good portion of time. Walking the road was a long way about it. It seemed much easier on horseback. The other possibility was to reach Lady Jillian, this was unlikely, as they had days on them, and were moving a little quicker. They would be held up by their baggage train, but only slightly. Eventually Paden asked.

"Warden...how far ahead do yew reckon Lady Jillians group are? A day and half, or much more than that?"

The dark-maned youth was hesitant, blue eyes looking over her shoulder as if expecting some horrifying monster to materialize in an instant. in a very low voice, her expression still a wary one.

Seeming insensitive to Taliera's slight discomfort, the pale mystery of a Girl replied in a very low voice, her expression still a wary one.
In spite of occasional stuttering, her words were clear and she was obviously making an effort to organise her thoughts into sentences.

"She's.. I am thinking clearly now for a time. It's... strange... and rare... so chaotic these days, I try to remember but... We are sorry, I make no sense. Yew saw what I saw, yew know some of what I know... We do not know where it comes from. Perhaps the rest of us will see it too, very soon, but I cannot control these things. The woman and the crystal, I do not know how far away they are by now. It was stolen, yew saw it, but where to? Pieces of a puzzle, not like yew'd know it... more like a maze. That's why we have roads, like this one. We can't quite yet stop looking out for bandits" the Girl stopped suddenly and frowned. "I'm no longer quite sure what name I have. Could yew think of a new one for me?" she asked brightly, shaping her lips into a smile in complete disregard of what she had said earlier.

There was a mild gust of wind, but the Girl's hair remained unmoving. Dark clouds appeared in the distance, but it would take a while before they reached the road, and whether or not they'd bring rain was uncertain.

Holding her head down as she felt this was something that should be held with reverance and solemnity, Taliera listened intently to the phrases that seemed so painstakingly strung together. This subject had not lost the ominous tint about it, and she was given to careful consideration of what this meant.

"I trust things will turn out how they should. We just have to keeping moving forward." The woman was going to say something more of encouragement, but she stopped short as the girl broke into a frown. Suddenly asked to name this companion, Taliera's cheeks flushed slightly in surprise. It was not at all like naming an animal or the like. This girl was a sentient creature (maybe a little too obscure for everyone else's understanding some of the time, but sentient nonetheless).

"I... er.. I could try. Yew would have to tell me if yew did not like it, though. I would hate to pick something that yew loathed. I mean, it is yer name, after all." Realizing that she was babbling, Taliera just offered a smile and stopped speaking so she could think as she walked.

Taliera ran a hand through her hair in thought, chewing on her lip. There had been a word that came to mind, but it was not of the common tongue. The Aero was having difficulty finding a single word meaning the same thing that she could translate to. Absently she had to wonder why there had to be different languages anyhow. It would be a great deal easier if one could say "fish" and everyone would know that the object of discussion was a slimy little animal that swam around in water. She was looking for something that meant an orator of important words, but nothing priggishly arrogant. The name could not be terribly long or obnoxious, but on the same token it had to hold meaning.

It came to her, and she cast her slate-coloured gaze at the odd girl.

"Sage? Do yew like that?" It was a simple name of hinting respect, but Taliera offered it tentatively.

Settling comfortably into the rhythm of the road, Rishon continued on towards Kiana. He was alone, for now at least, as Derogus had decided to gather some food for the trip. Not wanting to lose travel time, Rishon had decided to continue on, since Derogus could easily catch up on horseback.

"I wonder if he actually meant to catch up," Rishon mused silently to himself. "Might be he just decided the trip wasn't worth it and wanted to find a way to slip away without saying he wanted to."

Personally, he hoped the mercenary would join him again. If he could bring such a talented agent into Jakrog's service, it would reflect quite well on him, after all, and that would bring him closer to convincing the black orc to returning his powers.

The loud clopping of hooves would shatter the silence. Dero was on horseback and had a pack filled with food.

"Sorry about that. A few brigands accosted me in the forest. I was able to elude them for the..." He said, before shouting came out.

"He didn't pay the fee to cross. Kill him!"

Sighing, Dero dismounted and drew his sword. It gleamed brightly in the sun. It was a polished and etched metal. He looked over as Meretus instinctually backed off.

"Rishon, yew may want to step back. Leave them to me."

Five brigands would come from the road. Each had on the the leather equivilent to armor and had their own swords drawn. Dero stared at them all. "Do not do this, yew must have wives, or a family."

One brigand, apparently the leader said " No, so save yer breath and gimme yer money!"

Dero responded." How about this. Yew and me fight to the death. I win, yer friends back off and give up this life. Yew win, ye get my armor, sword, and horse."

"Deal." said the brigand, before rushing, sword in a downward slash. Dero easily brough his blade up to block it, and pushed the man off. The brigand then ran again, and the two would begin a flurry that would last for what seemed forever.

In the end, the brigand made on mistake. He went for an overhead slash, and dero brough his blade through the mans stomach.
"How...?" asked the brigand.

" I was a knight, and now a mercenary." responded dero, pulling his blade out. The man fell to the ground, dead, and his 'friends' ran as if they had seen a spirit. Dero sheathed his blade and crouched over the man, rummaging through his pockets.

Looking towards Rishon, Dero said "That was easy enough. Won't matter to im if I borrow anything."

The Uman on foot was of far greater interest than the one on horseback, but the fact that either of them travelled by horse at all made Rikka glad she had been outfitted with one, as well. Glad she was, that there were those among her people who understood the majestic animals were better for more than only food.

Thinking back to her summons to the Meeting Hall, Rikka reviewed her assignment. It was simple, really. Follow; get as close as yew can. See where the Uman is going, eavesdrop upon him if yew find a way. Follow him as for as long as it takes to learn the answers to the questions he refused to answer. Report back to us as quickly as possible once these things are determined. And of course, remain hidden. Or, if yew must reveal yerself, keep secret who, and what, yew are.

With the two Umen upon the road, Rikka kept her mount off of it, invisible among the trees. From within the thick foliage, she observed the attempted robbery and how handily the one Uman took care of the bandits. She made a mental note to mind herself closely should she ever end up in a battle with that one. For now, however, Rikka was content merely to watch.

She would rest her horse while the two men travelled hard, and then catch up with them whenever they stopped to rest themselves. And so, for now, Rikka moved slowly, letting her mount stop and graze as he would.

Dero watched as Rishon took off very quickly. He chuckled slightly, and then had Meretus break into a gallop. He would not be able to catch up to rishon, but he was able to keep him within sight.

By One-Time Mage (Rishon)

Friday, August 8, 2008 - 5:54 am GMT Edit | Link |

It didn't take long for Rishon to find a comfortable rhythm as he ran. After adjusting his pace to be sure that Derogus could match it, the pounding of his feet against the road ceased to require his concentration and freed his mind to drift where it would.

He still hadn't checked to see whether the item he was meant to retrieve from the Kastle had been obtained as per Jakrog's explanation. He supposed, as he ran, that he should have checked shortly after leaving the city. Still, if something had gone wrong, it was hardly his fault. He'd done everything he was meant to.

All the same, he resolved to check soon after he stopped running.

After that, Rishon simply let his mind wander. As usual, his idle thoughts principally concerned magick. Just because he couldn't use it anymore didn't mean he wouldn't think about the way it was supposed to work.

He ran for nearly an hour before he began to slow his pace. No matter how great a horse Meretus was, Derogus' mount was bound to be growing tired, and Rishon himself was reaching a point where a chance to rest would be more than welcome.
He slowed gradually over the course of a half-minute before he'd fully stopped.

His shoulders heaved with his heavy breathing as he tied the pendant back around his neck by its leather cord and waited for his traveling companion to stop.

While the two Umen gained considerable ground, Rikka knew they would soon require rest. She followed along within the treeline at a comfortable trot, remaining hidden not only from the men she pursued, but any other who might venture upon this section of the Lorimar. As if, she thought.

Meretus would slow to a walk near Rishon. He has breathing hard, obviously the run had worn him out slightly. Dero would dismount his steed, and also unstrapped some of his armor.

Dero, patting meretus' neck, would lay the armor on his back.

"there yew go. Breath easy, boy. I got a nice big carrot for yew when we rest."

The mere mention of a carrot perked Meretus' ears and he shook his head.

Dero then looks over to Rishon. "Yew run often? That was some impressive speed."

Rishon stepped off of the road and leaned his back against a tree to rest. "Often enough." A man could not attain perfection without keeping in shape, after all.

"I expect that will be more than enough to keep us from any trouble with the group ewe encountered back there. From here we should probably keep a more sensible pace." Rishon shielded his eyes as he looked up to use the sun's position to gauge the time. "Once we've rested, of course."

The former mage took a few more moments to help steady his breathing, then dug briefly through one of pouches on his belt.
"Ah, here it is," he smiled, withdrawing what appeared to be a large polished sapphire. "Marvelous. It worked."

By Warrior-agent of Churt (Rikka)

Tuesday, August 12, 2008 - 6:23 pm GMT Edit | Link |

The trees alongside the road alternately thickened and thinned, and so Rikka's progress was dependent upon how much time she could spend actually watching the road, as opposed to how much time she spent dodging low-hanging branches. The comfortable trot at which she'd begun now resembled something more like a pushing walk, as her mount picked his way.

She still was not terribly concerned about her quarry getting too far ahead. As long as she continued to pace her horse, she'd be able to make the same rate of progress they did -- or better. Besides, she thought, it was highly unlikely they would continue to press up the road during the night. Even if she could not draw close enough to them, just now, to spy upon them, she could do so after they had stopped for the night. It would do little good to eavesdrop upon a sleeping Uman. But if they were in the habit, as most Umen seemed to be, of chatting over a meal . . .

"What worked?" asked Dero. Meretus had slown back down to a walk. It would be obvious though that he was getting tired. Dero, on the other hand, still seemed to have energy in him,. He would dismount, and would lead his steed by the reigns.

"This," Rishon answered, holding up the large blue gemstone for the mercenary to see once he'd come down from his horse. "Ewe didn't think a man of my caliber would be sent from another continent just to ask a few questions, did ewe? No, the conversation was only part of my mission. This was the other."

"It's not an actual sapphire, of course. Some kind of magickal implement of use to my master that he had left behind in his days as king." He grinned and replaced the gem in the belt pouch from which he'd taken it. "When I left on this mission, I was given a quartz-like crystal and told that it was enchanted to trade places with the stone my master desired as soon as I brought it within the walls of the Kastle."

Rikka had drawn fairly close when she suddenly realized the two Umen had stopped to rest. Ere she could be seen, but perhaps not before she was out of earshot, she cut her horse farther from the Lorimar and turned deeper into the forest. Having run like they had, she doubted the pair would set a pace much faster than an easy trot before they stopped for the night.

It was said that when Jakrog took Churt's throne, he defeated all rival contenders without actually raising a finger, and Rishon didn't doubt it. As much as he resented it, there was no denying the retired king's power.

"Frightfully powerful magick. In any event, he retired some ages ago, before Aniada's tangle with the Ice King. Now we're headed to his current residence, in H-"

From where she stood her horse, Rikka could neither see the pair of Umen nor hear their conversation. And yet she did not dare return to a point nearer just now, for she did not sense that they had yet moved on. No matter, she told herself. It would be growing dark soon and unless the Umen were foolish enough to travel this stretch of the road at night -- and she did not think they were -- they'd be stopping to camp soon enough.

"specifics do not matter. I merely thought it would be good to have my weapon be stronger. It could help, don't yew think?" asked Dero. He was not even trying to hide his intruige of empowered weapons. He still wondered just what Thrukk could offer him...and the riches he could gain.

"Of course. Greater strength; greater power is always favorable." Rishon had dedicated his life to the pursuit of such things, and he still hoped to return to that search in time.

"I think we should set up camp," he finally asserted, noting a thin stream some distance off the southern side of the road. "We'll make better time starting out fresh and keeping a strong pace tomorrow. If ewe haven't found something by the time we get to Haven, I imagine we can outfit ewe there."

"Aye. That would be good. After all, I don't think it wise to arrive in the former king's preseance with sub-par weapons or armor." said dero, patting Meretus' neck again.

He noted the nearby stream and took his steed to drink. MEretus would kneel and drink from the stream, and Dero would wash his blade of the blood of his fallen opponent.

Rishon was up early the next morning to polish various bits of magickal equipment and continue his daily practice of attempting a variety of basic incantations just in case the wall that had been erected between him and his power had begun to crumble. This day was no different, and he met with the routine failures.

There had been days when he'd clawed at his own flesh for such failures, but he'd grown accustomed to it. Now, though, it was a nearly unavoidable reality, and all of his hope rested in perseverance.

Once Dero was up again and ready, he suggested that they start off again. With his magick pendant in hand, he ran aside the mercenary's horse at a maintainable trot.

As they entered this stretch of the road Gaftin seemed to almost instinctively become more alert. He tended to walk close to the edge of the roadway always moving toward the inside of curves.

Faer walked several paces behind Gaftin, relying on the Uman's ability to detect danger more than his own. Foul memories lurked in the shadows of a wish for quick passage.

A breeze rustled through the trees. A snapped twig? Barely out of sight, a goblin was creeping along, perhaps waiting for the right opportunity to grab some easy loot. He had an arrow notched as he observed Gaftin. He also saw Faer, but he had seen wizard tricks before, fire that did biddings. He would skewer Gaftin before he had a chance to do yelp.

A sigh escaped his lips as he traveled…if had not fallowed his old friend on such a whim he would have never fallen so far behind…by now they would have long since set foot in Seven Oaks…if they left by ship…he would have to wait for his wing to heal to fallow, by then he would have little to ni chance in finding them. Why am I going so far to help this elf? He considered, though in the end he had nothing better to do…a debt was a debt, he did fell bad for having set such troubles on her and her companions.
