Wall and City Gate

The City of ElHazir was designed in a day when war and strife were commonplace. Because of this, it has a stout outer wall surrounding the city proper. The wall has only one large gate, which is manned by Crusaders of Tyr (who function as the People's Guard does for the rest of Daelows Kingdom) at all times. The gate leads to the South Way, a road linking ElHazir and Daelows City.

There are also a series of strongpoints (bunkers) near the Harbour Quarter, as the wall naturally cannot extend across the water.

Leaving ElHazir through this gate takes one to the South Way.

It was nearly Noon when Alamar approached the city gates. He looked about for any guards and spotted them just inside the gateway. Hail there! May I enter? I am in need of supplies.

"Enter, friend," one of the bored guards called out, it was not even the middle of their shift yet, and the morning traffic had ended some time ago, leaving only a dribble of people and wagons entering and leaving the city. Before the civil war last year, this road would have been packed from dawn to dusk, and certainly traffic had improved from what it was some months past. Mayhap in the not to distant future, the port city would return to its former glory.

"Ah, ye shall be paying for those supplies now, will ye not?" one of the other guards asked with a grin as the elf passed.

Alamar walked Jet into the arch of the gateway and as soon as he hit shadows, Jet seemed to vanish leaving Alamar walking....
Oh aye, I shall be paying for my supplies, any good inn proprietor does. I have not found need to steal in many many a year...
He laughed along with the guard and then headed into the city.

Torin could not help but smile when he saw the familiar gate of his home city. How long had it been since he was last here, he wondered. More months than he could remember.

"We are here, my friends!" he called out. "Maghnus Estate is just off the City Streets in the Wyndover Heights District. Follow me!"

He gave a small salute to the guards at the Gate as he passed through.

The score of Crusaders escorted the party from the SOUTH WAY through the gate without delay, the Crusaders at the gate saluting the Captain as he passed. "Make way for the Royal Princess!" he bellowed, at which point the guards braced to attention while the group rode by.

"Right sir, to Wyndover Heights 'tis," Captain Harald called in answer. "Sergeant, clear the road ahead, the Princess and her companions shall not be delayed on the STREETS OF ELHAZIR.

Ariana blushed again as the crusader's leader bellowed out her arrival. "You really don't have to do that." she mumbled, mostly to herself since the captain certainly wouldn't have heard it. She sighed and resigned herself to being paraded down the streets of Elhazir. At least, she thought, she was in a group. This would be horrid by herself.

(OOC: From City Outskirts and Farms)

An Elf walked slowly down the road to the gates. Well, 'walked' might not be the correct description since both his feet were a few inches above the ground. He made a halt when he reached the gates.
"Greetings" he started talking to the guards with an accent that was very difficult to place, "I am just an adventurer wishing to enter the city. May I enter?"
The Elf wore a white robe, and both his eyes were... They were more like bright blue globes. His staff was made of perfectly transparent crystal glass, with a flashing blue orb on the top of it. Well mainly blue; the colour changed now and then to different colours, yet it always turned back to the the strange blue colour after a short while.

"Well, an' what be the purpose of yer visit then?" a Crusader asked in an ElHazir accent, looking the strange being up and down. An elf, the guard had not seen that many elves, so perhaps this one was not that unusual....

Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 1:22 pm GMT Edit | Link |

The Elf's facial expression remained completely neutral, as he stored the Crusader's accent in his memory. The blue orb flashed for a moment and the Elf spoke:
"Need I any purpose beyond exploring the city and studying your culture, or do you demand a toll? I am quite sure that I can pay the amount required".

Saturday, March 27, 2004 - 8:11 pm GMT Edit | Link |

"A toll?!?" the Crusader guard asked with a chuckle. "Nay, there be no toll to enter ElHazir. Though without money, ye shall find staying in the city impossible, less ye be noble," the guard added a wink to his joke. "An' plenty of ruffians willin' to take what money ye have, particularly near the harbour.

"So, good luck in yer studies then, Scholar," the guard turned away to accost a farmer driving a cart into the city....

The Elf shrugged and moved on past the guards into the great city, confusion striking him swiftly. Finding the castle in Greater Daelows was one thing... Hoping find a few persons in a city in which he didn't know his way around would be as optimistic as changing into dragon form and then expect people to pat him on his head. He'd have to search and ask, he guessed.

Saturday, May 29, 2004 - 7:18 am GMT Edit | Link |

Duncan arrived in late evening, at the beginning of the time the highland folk called the Hunting of the Owls. His stout boots and good black cloak were dusted with the signs of travel, and the dwarf's mind lingered on thoughts of a warm meal at this Uman city's tavern. A city is an awesome thing, he thought as he gazed out across the sprawling port, the last edges of sunlight resting on the masts of the tallships and the tower spires, pennants flapping in the evening breeze.

His journey from the highlands had been more than a long one, and the dwarf was eager to search about the port for work. His coin pouch was getting rather light, and he still needed to buy himself better equipment.

Hands to his thick belt, which held his pouches and a pair of fine daggers, Duncan headed the last stretch to the city. Though he was not weary, dwarves do not tire easily, he was glad the day's journey was done. ElHazir, he had heard only rumours of it in the hillands, and was most interested. He approached one of the guards at the gate, smoothing his long auburn beard and smiling cordially.

"Hail good men, where might a hungry dwarf find a hot meal in this great city?"

Walking was always a pain, and when you have to Uman children with you its even worse.

Not that they bothered Lucius, more to the fact that there were still Uman, and they had to stop and rest, eat and sleep...things that had never held the woman up before.

However, it mattered not, for the city gates where finally within eye sight! Approaching the gates in a normal, travelers fashion, Lucius addressed the guards in hope of passage into the city. After all the gates where closed, and she couldnt exactly force them down...in this state at least.

"Greetings fine guards, might I be as so privileged as to enter your fine city?" She asked politely.

By Reluctant Aeros Monk (Avonox)

Thursday, August 19, 2004 - 5:03 am GMT Edit | Link |

From The City Streets two figures approached the gates. One was a male Aeros of medium stature and build with deeply tanned skin and straw-colored hair and feathers. One wing was bound tightly against his back to keep it from further injury. He walked along at a leisurely pace, tapping his iron-capped walking stick on the ground as he made his way up to the gate.

The person walking beside the Aeros wore a hooded plain brown cloak. A deformity beneath the cloak made him appear hunchbacked. Not much else could be discerned from a casual glance.

Avonox thought the guards about to inquire of his business, so he stated it beforehand. "My friend and I are off on a short tour of the countryside. I expect you will see us again when we return before sundown." If he noticed the rather tall platinum-haired youg woman and the somewhat scruffy boy speaking to the guards on the other side of the gate, he gave no sign of it.

He wanted no inquiries about what had happened to the man in who's company he had left the city. His bound-up wing ached and he had a fierce case of windburn.

Gods, preists, and spirits; he was done with all of them today and all he wanted to do was find a nice quiet place to rest his feet. All this damnable walking is the worst part about a wing injury. He thought, keeping his mind off of more serious matters by focusing on his minor discomforts.

Cerraphi trotted, making doubly sure she kept her hood raised, up to the gates and peered at them curiously. In all honesty, she didn't find anything out of the ordinary. They were in fact gates, she determined, and not much different from those that opened on the city of Daelows for that matter. Though, they did have guards who's good favor seemed to be the key to obtain passage. Or at least, that was the way it appeared to Cerraphi from the other travelers who had passed before her.

"Greetings, friends. I mean neither thee nor this fair city harm, though I am in need of lodging in ElHazir for the night or perhaps two. An it please thee, might I be permitted to pass through yon gates in peace?" she hailed in as benign a voice as she could muster. Who could tell what guards would do to innocent travelers based upon even the slightest suspicion?

Better to be safe rather than sorry, I'll wager...

The guards at the gate had only recently come on watch, and so had not yet reached the state of ennui that comes from watching nothing happen for an extended period of time. When one hooded woman called out to them, a Crusader answered, "Aye friend, ya seems not coming with a band of thugs to do harm. But by what right calls ya the Crusaders of Tyr by 'thee'?" the municipal guardsman demanded, hands on his swordbelt.

She put her hands up in a show of surrender. "No offense meant to thee of course, friends. No offense meant. Olde habits die hard, one might verily suppose." She chuckled in good humor. "Prithee, is there another title perhaps more worthy for usage when one is addressing the citizens of ElHazir?"

((O.O.C.: I'm sorry if broke one rule or another with my...archaicness. I found that when I typed in 'y-o-u' that it turned into 'yew.' I wasn't sure if the Worlde Arcane was discouraging the usage of that particular word, so I changed my tact.))

"Whence comes ya that municipal officials be addressed informally, Miss?" he wondered in genuine surprise.

"Well, mayhap ye'll forgive me mine ignorance then, good sirs," Cerraphi offered with a deep bow, "as I've never experienced such dealings with said municipal officials. Seen them from afar I have, of course, having grown up in the outskirts of The Great City of Daelows, but I have never had the distinct pleasure of speaking face to face with one until now." She tipped her head and smiled. "I do hope that I have not offended ye too greatly."

Lily rode Jinxt from the Market Center to just inside the city gates. She looked around for the wagon Bellworn had mentioned would be waiting. Seeing none, she dismounted and waited for the others to catch up, silently chewing on one of the apples. And mentally chewing over the addition of Taye to their traveling party. She also wondered about the other man who Bellworn had said would be joining them along the way.

And Faer. . . he was a mystery to the Korstun lass. She made a mental note to ask him of his background. For whatever reasons, she found herself feeling she could trust him.

She made a pretty sight, standing there, leaning against her brown horse, blonde tresses tumbling about her shoulders while she munched away on the fruit. The sun was dropping in the sky and added a strawberry hue to the gleam of her locks.

It was only as the others approached that a sternness returned to her face, and she turned to feed the rest of her apple to Jinxt.

Following behind with the others, Taye and the rest soon caught up to Lily waiting by the gate leading to the south way. She was a rare sight of beauty standing amongst laborers and tradesmen. Taye's instinct was one of admiration, although he had to try hard to supress these urges. Besides, it seemed they had gotten off on the wrong foot. It wasn't to be helped now.

Well, I'll be. If it's more convenient for yew, m'lady, yew could simply ride on yer lonesome and we'll meet yew there in our own good time, seeing as yer in such a hurry.

He paused thoughtfully, before following with an unsure smile. One would have to give him credit for at least making an effort to be amicable.

He broke from the crowd, returning moments later with a large loaf of bread.

Something for the wagon ride, seeing as I didn't get to enjoy that soup as intended...

He bit his tongue, already regretting reminding the group of the escapade that followed their untimely introduction. Turning to Gaftin, he continued.

Any sign of that wagon?

He produced a tiny jar filled with strawberry preserve, stooped down and showed it to Nickelwest.

Probably a little tastier than a goldfish, I reckon.

He winked at the boy and playfully messed up his hair.

Gaftin caught sight of Lily some thirty or forty yards from the gate. Standing as she was with the sun streaming in behind her she was among the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. She must have caught sight of Taye about then because her customary scowl returned in the blink of an eye.

Lily and Taye had obviously not hit off well, Gaftin wasn’t sure anyone save himself would tolerate Taye long. But when he was sober and of his right mind he was a good man. Charming, witty, and strong as an ox he could be a very powerful ally. He was not much of a leader though, He was prone to poor decisions and easily distracted by wine, women, and song. He shouldn’t get too distracted by Lily though. She may just finish the job the bandits had not a few years ago.

Gaftin caught Lily’s eye and held up one finger as if to indicate for her to hold a moment and he disappeared into one of the shops emerging a scant minute later. By then Taye had caught up with Lily. Gaftin could tell by her reaction that Taye must have said something to her but he had no idea what. Gaftin made his way through the crowd and soon joined the others.

The wagon will be here momentarily. The shopkeeper made us a deal and there is a Krowne in it for each of yew. We will be carrying a bit of cargo for him to Daelows. Nothing dangerous or likely to be stolen. It just needs to be moved. Plus we get use of the wagon for free. Gaftin smiled at the rosy picture he had painted for everyone.

Less than three minutes later, as Taye was talking to Nick a wagon pulled up beside them and a man jumped off of it. Here ye be. he said in a less than friendly tone then simply walked away. The Wagon was sturdy and even luxurious as it was one of few that had springs. That made the ride much more comfortable. One the back of the wagon was a large box, some 6 feet long and three feet wide.

Gaftin smiled once again as if this was the normal thing in the worlde. Shall we be off?

“Yew should have left alrrready.” a muscular Lin warrior observed, padding alongside the wagon, raking his claws contemptuously along the boarded side, “Yew will not rrreach the city beforrre sleep time. Lucky for yew I see in darrrk. Yes?”

Gaftin would recognise him as Raziel, the moneychanger’s bodyguard and sometime enforcer whom Barrelman had offered to send with them as far as the capital in case the party ran into anything untoward on the road.

Brushing the hair Tayeba had brushed askance from across his goggles, Nicklewest looked up into the luminescent eyes of the cat-like warrior, as green as emeralds and just as hard. But Raziel was not looking at the boy - rather, his uncompromising gaze was fixed on contents of the fishbowl cradled in the young man’s arms.

Was he purring? Or was it his stomach rumbling?

“Taye has strawberries!” he told the Lin, his voice little more than a mousey squeak “Much nicer than horrible, slimy fish.”

Faer followed the rest towards the gate. After some time a wagon, and soon they were off.

"I will walk," he told everyone and no one in particular.

The big man, Taye, seemed to be making an effort at humour or at least civility as he made his comment to Lily. She merely squinted at him in return before he dashed off and returned with a loaf of bread and a small jar of preserves which he waved in front of Nicklewest's nose to tantalize the boy. Little did the man know that sweets were a downfalling of Lily's and, despite herself, her mouth watered up, only adding to her consternation. But then the new 'man' arrived on the scene. . . a cat-man, it would seem.

Now Lily thought she'd seen it all by this time in her travels from Korstun - a woman with the head of a bird, a wild-child who could burst into flame, an elf woman archer who defied all she'd been told about Elven, an Aeros, a white ogre, a fire elemental and now this.

Her violet eyes opened wide, but only for a moment. Dark lashes quickly dropped over them as the sound of the warrior's claws on the side of the wagon set her teeth on edge. The noise quickly buried any thoughts of strawberry preserves, candy sticks and honeyed sugar. She mounted Jinxt in one swift movement, and was off through the gates like a shot. She would wait a short distance up ahead where she would have time to gather her wits.

to South Way is that the right way?)

Balancing on the very tips of his sandaled feet, Nicklewest was just about able to slide the fishbowl he carried atop the large box already secured to the wagon bed, before scrambling up the side himself, the spokes of the huge, wooden wheels serving as useful footholds in his ascent. Snatching up the bowl and nestling it in his lap, the boy settled down against the crate and waited for their entourage to set off after Lily - for the young woman was already out of sight, masked by the cloud of dust her horse’s hoofs had kicked up from the dusty trails beyond the cobbled highways of ElHazir.

Taye, can yew take the wagon? I would prefer to ride for a bit myself.

Gaftin mounted up and followed Lily through the gates.

Taye ruffled his brow as his crew slowly shrank, as more and more of them ran off on horses by themselves...

I can take it, but where is it we're headed?

Taye mounted up on the wagon and took the reigns of the two horses that were standing idly.

Com'on yew lazy arses, let's get this show on the road. Anyone not on the wagon had better make it quick, else yer gettin' left behind.

Taye, looking back, checked that at least Nickelwest was settled on the back, before snapping his reigns and getting the horses trotting contentedly. A creak in the wooden structure let Taye know that Raziel was climbing abord. He chuckled at his unintentional use of the phrase on the wagon.

Ash, momentarily distracted by the newcomer, nearly missed Taye's warning. It was the creak of the wagon wheels the brought her back to reality and sent her scrambling. She clung to the backboard and hauled herself over the edge, rolling in next to Nickelwest with a burst of heavy panting.

There was not much traffic passing through the gates that morning, and the two found it easy to pass through with their laden horses. Just outside the gates Skylar made them pause so they could mount, and then they were off heading along the South Way towards Daelows.

Pandora oohed and ahhed at the many different people caught in the sparse traffic, though there wasn't anything particularly amazing today so it had no trouble with following Skylar like the good Elemni it was, for once not distracted by something random.

Imitating Sky as she mounted her horse, Pan clambered onto its own and continued on alongside its elfish friend.
