Worlde Arcane: Aniada: Daelows Kingdom: The Capitol: Greater Daelows: Gates of the City: South Gate: From the South Way to ElHazir

A functional wide gate, used by much of the trade traffic to and from the port city of ElHazir. At least ten men of the People's Guard are always on duty here. The South Way is nearly always filled with traffic moving in both directions.

Leaving Greater Daelows through this gate takes one to the South Way.

By Torin Maghnus, Mapmaker & Seafarer (Torin)

Friday, February 20, 2004 - 8:34 pm GMT Edit | Link |

The South Gate soon came into view as Torin rode his horse at an easy pace toward the city exit. It had been many months since the seafarer had been on the southern road to ElHazir where most of his family still resided. His thoughts turned to his mother, a shadow of her former vivacious self since the disappearance of his father at sea. The mapmaker was anxious to check on her well-being, as well as the condition of Maghnus Shipping, now run by his older brother.

Torin reined in his russet steed as he neared the gate. Several of his traveling party were visible in the distance. By the look of the sun in the sky he calculated he was a bit early, but had every confidence all would be along when the sun was directly overhead. The warming rays felt good on his back as he watched Kardoth and Kymera ride into view.

Saturday, February 21, 2004 - 9:07 am GMT Edit | Link |

Trask rode up on Calamity, Irihi in the saddle behind him. Avonox and Sahar would follow shortly.

The sun gleamed off of the psiknight's bits of armor as he raised one hand in greeting, that trademark grin upon his face. "Hail, Torin," he called out to the seafarer. "'Tis a fine day for a ride."

As Kymera neared the gate she saw Trask and Irihi arrive from the other direction. The catling looked resplendant in his armour, and the elf maiden cool and serene as usual.

The dryad reined in her steed on the other side of Torin where she acknowledged everyone with a nod and polite smile. A slight breeze ruffled her long curls as she turned her gaze to the street where more riders were approaching.

"Indeed it is!" Torin responded to Trask's greeting. "And ye look more than ready to meet whatever the day brings." He couldn't help but admire the gleaming armor worn by the warrior. "M'lady Irihi, you look as lovely as ever." he greeted the sorceress, a smile on his lips.

With the arrival of Kymera, the mapmaker felt his already good spirits rise just a bit higher. She was radiant as usual. "M'lady." he nodded to the dryad, his eyes following her gaze down the street where several more familiar forms made their way toward the gate. "It appears everyone is going to be right on time. A good beginning."

Moments behind Kymera, Haggis trotted up, his battered hat set at an angle on his gray head, his long pipe clamped between his teeth.

"Afternoon all." he shifted in his saddle and re-checked his bags fastened behind him to ensure they were still snug.

The princess , still hooded, arrived just behind the others. "Greetings, all," she called as she slowed er horse to a stop beside the group. "Is everyone here?" she asked, looking around at the others, trying to remember names.

The ten guards on duty at the gate had been alerted to expect the Princess to pass this way on her way to ElHazir, and so the Sergeant of the Guard formed his men in a single rank to the side of the gate. "Gate guard, aten-shun!" he called, then placed his fist on the leather armour of his chest, where his sergeant's insignia hung over his purple sash. "Compliments of the People's Guard, Princess Ariana, and a safe journey for you to ElHazir," he called out.

By The Duke of Cabermyr (Trask)

Saturday, February 21, 2004 - 9:11 pm GMT Edit | Link |

Trask's eyes seemed darkened by the sun, his golden eyes almost looking hazel as he glanced about at his companions. The long, heavy bundles attached to Calamity's saddle remained under tight wrapping, to be shared with the group in due time. The "presents" he had picked out for everyone would hold until they arrived comfortably in ElHazir.

Surprisingly, the only pack-like container Trask carried with him for the journey was a relatively small traveling bag slung over his shoulder. Despite the apparent unpreparedness of his equipment, Trask's bearing was at ease, almost excited to be on the road for a lengthy journey.

One by one the golden-eyed Duke smiled and nodded to the companions as they approached, bowing slightly to the princess and Haggis. Kymera, however, held his eye contact just a bit longer, his gaze intense until he dragged it away from the auburn-haired beauty.

"Well, then. Lead the way, Master Maghnus."

"Princess Ariana, your presence honors us, as always." Torin gave a short bow of his head as he sat astride his mount. The salute of the Princess by the guards heightened the feeling of importance that already surrounded the expedition, sending a small thrill through the seafarer's veins .

"Let us ride for ElHazir!" Torin urged his horse forward through the gate, one arm held high as he took to the familiar road that would lead them to the port city of his boyhood.

Sunday, February 22, 2004 - 2:24 am GMT Edit | Link |

Avonox supposed that riding on the back of a horse was preferable to circling the slow-moving group for hours, but only just barely. The beast Trask had lent to him and his sister seemed well enough behaved, so Avo simply let it wander along at the rear of the company, and tried his best to remain mounted while being jostled around on back of the animal.

A number of the Uman guardsmen of the city had assembled to see them off. Though the People's guard had saluted the Uman princess that was travelling with the group--Avonox couldn't help but feel a little thrill of excitement at that To think that I would join the company of nobility, warriors, and strange exotics!--he raised a hand to them while Sahar waved energetically and blew exaggerated kisses.

Irihi smiled slightly at Torin's complement. Everyone seemed in high spirits, but for reasons the necromancer could not place, she did not share in their excitement. On the way to the gate, Maelstrix's ring had begun to itch and burn slightly, yet when she had prised the thing off her finger, there was no sign of anything amiss. After all, it wasn't as if someone would make an enchanted ring out of brass.

That such a small thing would bother her made no sense, anyway, yet she still felt a vague melancholy as the group rode through the gates under the bright morning sun. Once they were a short distance from the city walls, Irihi pulled the hood of her cloak up to cover her head, and then held just a little more tightly to Trask.

Krornur came to the gate. All the strange thoughts and experiences had delayed him too much. He knew he wouldn't be able to keep up now, unless he used means of a more drastic nature, and he figured it wouldn't be too clever. Not in this land at any rate. Besides he had lost the track. The few last traces of their auras were very faint, and the only hint was to travel due south.
He hurried down the south road so he could reach a place, where it would be safe to transform.
Showing his true form to the guards would be pure madness, but he would need to transform in order to travel quickly. He decided it would be safe enough to transform into something less fearsome for now.
When he had walked for a while, his entire shape changed slowly into that of an eagle and he started his journey south.

He would have to descretly request the where abouts of Malchazar, but that did not bother him, if any of Malchazars goons wanted to pick a fight, he was ready for them, although he had not founght since back in Basura where he had been injured.

He began to walk into the city and was not much passed the gates when another strange vision came. Why on earth were these happening to him, he wondered as the blurring light took his vision.

This time it showed Malchazar himself, picking up a strange looking item, which even through his vision, Paden could feel a magical energy resonating from it. In the background, Paden could make out a few details, and there was a crest above a doorway that was visible, sadly the details of the crest were not so clear.

The vision subsided and he slumped against the wall closest to him. Taking a breath, he realised that that was considerably less painfull than the first two.

He got up from the position he sat slumped in and made his way towards the streets of the great city.

There was little traffic at the South Gate when the Palace Wizard materialized just inside the city holding a large clear corked jar.

Inside the glass container, the tiny form of a wood nymph lay still on the bottom, still feeling the effects of the numbing myst conjured by the battle mage to subdue the prisoner, Quinlan Lobeck, in the deepest dungeon.

The mage looked around for a safe place to release the green-haired nymph. Carefully uncorking the bottle, he placed it on its side in the crook of a nearby oak tree. The little mischief maker would have easy access to freedom once she awakened fully.

Satisfied with his work, the royal mage again mumbled a simple spell and winked out of sight.

The elf peered out from behind the tree. The Main Gate had looked terribly intimidating, but this gate seemed much more... earthy. The smell coming from these people was the smell of work, not the cloying scent of aristocracy. This city called to her, but it was likely because she was so weather-worn. So many days on the road had not been kind to her, and she sorely needed a place to rest that was both warm and dry. Sadly, she was prepared for the reception she would likely receive at whatever door she crossed, but she had to try.

Tentatively, cautiously, Anyannka stepped up to the gates.

South Way to El Hazir)

The morning sun was on its way up high by the time the travellers reached the south gate, which seemed a mere tiny breach in the massive skyacraping outer wall. A steady stream of traffic went in and out of the entrance, some leading donkeys, others carrying packs on their shoulders. Everyone was screened by the city guard below and the archers on duty atop the stone wall, but only a handful seemed to get stopped, for whatever reason.

Taye rolled up carrying his mixed cargo of people and a big wooden box, bumping over the uneven stone pathway. The guards picked them out from far away, and eyed the approading cart with scrutiny. It would be hard to make them believe that so many people were needed to transport such meagre cargo. Surely there would be questions. But Taye was in no position to answer them.

Several guards took a step away from their formation, one of which held up a hand, indicating for them to stop. The curl of his brow was one sign that this guard was of higher rank. His unpleasant stare smacked of superiority.

P'raps yew'd like to handle this, Gaftin? Seein' as yew know more about this box than I do.

Taye gently tightened the reigns and allowed the horses to come to a stop just some feet away from the guardsmen.

Good day Captain, What may I do for yew?

The Gaurdsman looked non-plussed. Sargeant

This caught Gaftin off gaurd and he stumbled out a weak Sargeant

What's yer business in Daelows?

Myself and my companions are returning a wagon, delivering a box, visitig the library then we shall be leaving yer fair city.

What's in the box?

Art? It takes this many of ye t' deliver art? Open the box.

Well, I dont know, I

Ye gonna open the box or am I opening th ebox after I have ye all arrested?

Gaftin smiled. Well Sargeant. Yew make quite the convincing argument.

Gaftin moved to the wagon and pulled the lid from the box. The Sargeant falshed him a look of some disapproval then hoisted himself up on the rear wheel, elevating himself so he could see the contents of the box. Hmm. Get it movin' then.

The Sargeant stepped down and waved the group through the gate.

Though it hadn't been but a few hours, Ash was finding the back of their wooden contraption to be increasingly uncomfortable. Restless, she squirmed through different positions, never quite content. Even more agitating was the road, which had turned from a simple, dirt path - not entirely unbearable, to a cobblestone boulevard that rocked her with every rotation of the wheels.

It was a relief then when the wagon rolled to a stop. Ash looked to Taye, watching his lips move. Perplexed by his expression, she peered over the ledge, knuckles white as she pulled herself into view. She had met men from Daelows before and this man had the same stiff air about him. Ash could hardly make out the muttered appeals of Gaftin, but in a short time the officer appeared. Satisfied by what he saw, he disappeared and soon they were moving. She sat silent, at first, but unable to contain her curiousity scrambled onto the driver's seat next to Taye to get a better look at the city walls. Never had she seen such mastered architecture, and her gaping jaw gave it away.

At the gate a group of bored looking guards stood on duty, apparently things were rather slow today because as the two approached no one else could be seen on the road and a few of the guards brightened a little at the prospect of having something to do. They could of course search all those seeking entrance to the city, and whilst they usually didn’t, doing so was something to while away a little time on a slow shift.

“Halt, who goes there!” Went up the cry as they got nearer, at what Skylar considered to be an unnecessarily loud volume. “Off those horses then, obligatory search of all persons, horses and packs must be carried out by order of the King.” This wasn’t strictly true, but the guard saying it obviously felt important and Skylar knew better than to argue with a group of well-armed guards, so she reigned in her horse and climbed down without fuss.

“’’Ere yew search the elf, I’ll take the… other one.” What was the other one, the guard in charge wondered. Uman, or maybe elven? Male… female? He wasn’t quite sure, and he began to feel that this search might not have been such a good idea after all.

Pandora eyed the guards curiously as it and its companion approached the gates. The yell from the guard nearly made the Elemni tumble off its horse in surprise though; really, they could hear perfectly fine! And Skylar had pointy ears so Pan was pretty sure she could hear really well herself. So, wrinkling its nose in annoyance, Pan clambered off the horse too, only momentarily getting its foot caught in the stirrup and stumbling about with a whimper before managing to right itself.

At the guard's words of the...'other one,' Pan looked around, grinned sheepishly, and waved enthusiastically at the guard who was to search it. "Hi," it greeted shyly as if meeting a new friend.

By Skylar, Former Elven Slave (Sky)

Saturday, December 12, 2009 - 7:29 pm GMT Edit | Link |

Clearing her throat to try and discretely distract Pandora’s attention away from the guard, Skylar edged her way over and pulled on her sleeve. She knew from experience that the guards tended to only be more suspicious of people who were overly friendly, and indeed it seemed the damage was already done for another guard was immediately drafted in to help search through their packs more thoroughly, whilst the one in charge had now resorted to eyeing them suspiciously, as if they might decide to make a run for it any moment.

Skylar tried to look nonchalant. Unfortunately this seemed to make him look at them more suspiciously and eventually he produced some kind of official looking ledger. “State yer names and yer business in the city,” he barked, his pen hovering over the paper threateningly, as behind him his men scattered their belongings all over the ground. Thank goodness they were only ordinary camping supplies – although Skylar was aware that the strange medallion and jar that had been thrust upon them by the now deceased man on the road probably couldn’t count as ordinary camping supplies.

“My name is Skylar, and this is Pandora. We are merely travellers here to stay overnight in the city on our way back to Terajin and maybe buy a few supplies and things.” The guard was busy writing this all down, which was lucky since Skylar was actually looking past him to the man behind, who had just pulled the strange ruby-sealed jar from her saddlebag and was now examining it curiously. Oh dear, now he was approaching, and now he was showing it to the man in charge, and now they were both looking suspicious, and now… “And what would ‘mere travellers’ be doing’ wiv somefing like this? Don’t eiver of yew look rich enuff to ‘ave bought it. So what is it? Stolen? Found? Given?” The last two options seemed to amuse the other guards who chuckled appreciatively as Skylar floundered around for an explanation. She didn’t think ‘a man forced it on us and then died’ would really cut it with these guards.

But apparently Pandora didn't think so, and, wanting to be as helpful as possible to speed up the search so it and Sky could be on their way, Pan offered explanations for everything as they went through them, its hands folded behind its back.

"That's a lantern. You can light it with a flint and tinder. That one's the flint that you use to light it, if you can't light fires by yourself. That's a sleeping roll, it's like a bed you can carry with you when you're not in a comfy inn. That's food, it's the best thing in the worlde! Those are crackers, they're made of wheat that got ground up and mushed with other funny things. Those are dried meat. I think they're from deer. You shoot the deer and then cut it up and dry the muscle part, because that's the part that's tasty. Oh, and that's a map. They're helpful for navigating on roads and stuff. See, this is where we came from, and that's where we are now!"

Blinking earnestly, Pandora giggled and waited for Sky to explain what they were doing here. It sounded perfect to the Elemni, and it nodded now and again to confirm Sky's words and prove she wasn't lying. But when they brought up the subject of the weird jar, Pandora pouted and tried to snatch it away. "Hey, that's not nice! The sleepy man gave it to us earlier, not to you. And we have to babysit it for him so be careful or else he might be mad and wake up."

Oh dear. She really should have told Pandora about staying quiet and not trying to be 'helpful' in any way before they had approached the guards. One of them was looking at her as if considering her sanity, and the other had clearly already considered and was edging away from her as if she might be contagious.

"Erm, that's..." Ah. Pandora had apparently got their first and now both guards had got their swords drawn, and more importantly, were holding them with the points towards Pandora, whilst the guard in charge continued to examine the shell. "He wasn't sleepy, he was dead! He gave us this and then died. We burned his body!" That had been horrible. Skylar really hadn't wanted to think about that part.

"Seems to me that we'd better be confiscatin' this 'ere shell, as well as this trinket." The head guard was now turning it over and over in his hands, his expression one of someone who's just realised this is his lucky day. "Prolly stolen goods. Prolly a nice reward for returning them to the owner. We'll even let you ladies carry on into the city if you go quietly. How 'bout that fer a deal?"

Part of Skylar thought it sounded like a very good deal. Who cared if the guards took the crystal shell and sold it and kept the money? She hadn't wanted the stupid thing in the first place; she didn't even know what it was! But the memory of the man's haunted face floated in front of her eyes; he had died to bring that jar here, he had entrusted it to them, even if he had been too weak to tell them why; who were they to let it go so easily?

"We're taking it to the wizards." She'd made it up on the spot, but it seemed as good an explanation as any. "The dead man was a wizard, with his dying breath he entrusted it to our care. You should give it back to us; he would not like to think that it had been taken from us, not after he gave it to us." She emphasised the word, hoping that these guards were like all guards everywhere, just a little bit afraid of anything yew couldn't see, hear, and hit with a large stick. That would include magick, and yes, glancing over her shoulder had been a nice detail because now they were glancing over their shoulders and looking a little worried; somehow the idea that 'he might get mad and wake up' probably didn't seem quite so crazy to them right now. Just a quick tweak would probably finish the job off. She squinted, moved her hand just a little, and the shell tugged itself from the guards hands.

That seemed to have done it. Even before Sky was sure she had caught the shell the guards were backing away. "Er, right then ladies. Taking it to the wizards over in Trinsic? You carry on; wouldn't want it to be said that we got in the way of wizards' work. I'm sure it's very important and all that. Help the ladies pack their things away, eh lads?" The head guard waved a vague hand before retiring back to the small guard house to make what were obviously very important notes.

Yep. Mhm. Pandora nodded firmly to back Sky's story up. Wizards were very serious business. Mhm. Didn't mess with them, not at all. Glaring pointedly at the nearest guard who had tried to take the jar away, Pan yanked it right back once the guards had changed their minds, cradling the thing as if it were a baby. In truth, it really didn't understand the significance of what had come to pass earlier, at least nothing past honoring the dead man's wish. They had to take care of it! If someone died and gave yew something, it would be rude not to.

"Yep it is important. You should be nicer to people you know," Pandora scolded, waggling its finger at the guards disapprovingly before they had disappeared to go attend to whatever matters guards attended to.

Gathering their things up and packing them away again, Pan huffed angrily to itself and went back over to stand next to Skylar. Now that that was over and done with, its attention was easily on other things. "So...where do we go first? This city is so big, I remember!"

Without further ado, Pan grabbed a hold of its horses reins and continued on into the gates.

Thankful that the ordeal was over and feeling strangely exhilarated, although somewhat exhausted, Skylar grabbed the reins of her horse and hurried after Pan.

As the sun settled toward the horizon, a large caravan was winding its way up the road toward the South gate. Not all wagons, animals, and travellers entered Daelows right away, however. As the convoy reached the relatively safe countryside outside the city's walls, groups of travellers split off from the mass, some making arrangements with local farmers to camp or stay for the night to save themselves coin over a city Inn. More than one wagon turned away from the main road and wended its way to some unknown destination. Some were bound for nearby communities, but others were undoubtably contraband which would wait for all manner of smuggling or bribery before it reached the city proper. A bribe to the gate guards in broad daylight would only land the smuggler in prison. But by night...

A trio of large covered wagons and several burly-looking armed men split off from the caravan and made their way to an overgrown field just out of sight of the city gates. The sun was quite low and it was time for making camp, but the guards and wagon drivers simply sat grimly in the empty field, mostly concealed by brush. These people were being paid handsomly enough that they would have no trouble affording an Inn, and entertainment, but later once the job was done.

Just inside the South Gate, almost lost in the evening crowd, a nondescript fellow skulked near the wall. He watched the crowd with quick eyes, seeking a particular person. On the back of his neck, just barely exposed, was a peculiar symbol, roughly tatooed in black ink. Though nearly hidden a sharp-eyed person who had seen the symbol before would surely recognize it...

Making her way about the crowd Sorra was rather impressed at how crowded it still was even this late in the evening, she had assumed most would have cleared out by now leaving it relatively easy to locate her contact…though as usual nothing ever went that easy. She soon decided it would be best to make her way to a far wall and start scanning over the crowd looking for anyone …suspicious…

Once at the wall a lone man standing only a dozen feet or so away soon cot her eye, a strange tattoo partially concealed on his neck is was grasped her attention, approaching the man she smiled and bowed her head politely, “pleasant weather this afternoon wouldn’t yew say?” she commented casually as she leaned up agents the wall next to the man.

Glancing about making shore there were none paying “to close” of attention to her or the man she paused for a moment before speaking, “what be the task? And when is it to be done?” she continued her eyes gazing over to the man.

The man nodded slightly when Sorra first caught his eye. "So yer her, are ye?" He said quietly, sizing her up. "Well, I s'pose yew'll do. Follow me." With that, he struck out into the twisted alleyways in the cramped neighborhood where the city's sprawl had run up against the south wall.

"We're movin' three wagons through town tonight. Yer gonna keep the way clear of the Guard between the stroke of seven and eight while we get the wagons out to the main road." The man explained as they walked.

The wagons were being moved just after dusk to avoid raising suspicion, as the main roads would still be busy with commerce, but three wagons in the small byways near the wall would pique the interest of any patrolman that happened across them. Until they joined the thronging traffic, they would be most vunerable. Just where the wagons were coming from, what was inside, and how they were going to appear in the wall town was not explained.

"There should be two patrols during yer watch. Jus' one man on foot each. We don' care 'ow yew do it, just keep them guardsmen off ta road. Then follow the wagons to the Rising Sun, but don' be too obvious about it."

Sorra made no comment as the man explained the mission, simple…though at the very lest not boring. Fallowing close behind, her mind began to wonder on the words of the man back in the Red Devil…could Osu be betraying her? The man’s words had not said such directly…though she could not help but insinuate. Though she lacked the evidence to prove such and so for the moment she would continue on.

Any hidden observer would note that the wagons parked in this innocuous field have disappeared with the sunset. Now where could they have gone?
